• Shadrach scanned his thumb over the apartment door, and the machine beeped, granting him access. He released Bella’s leash, and she immediately began barking furiously, alerting Shadrach to the presence of an intruder in the house. Cautiously, he positioned himself near a vase, noticing a rod left by the maid during her cleaning. He picked it up, ready to defend himself, before stepping outside and hearing laughter. It was a voice he recognized.
