Chapter 5 A Slap to the Face

• From far away, Nix could see that the mansion was brightly lit. The parking lot was packed with luxury cars worth millions and with customized license plates.
• Howard was a government official, so the party was not done in an excessively lavish manner. Moreover, Kenn and Whitney's engagement party was planned at the last minute, so not too many people were invited. However, everyone in attendance was from Southvane's upper crust. They were either top government officials or wealthy businesspeople.
• Other than some individuals who obtained their invitations through connections, the attendees were famous people within their fields.
• Nix, Anvil, and Vice were stopped by two bodyguards at the entrance.
• "Excuse me, sir. May I see your invitation card?"
• Nix shook his head. "I don't have one."
• The two bodyguards exchanged a condescending glance.
• One of them held out a hand. "I'm sorry. We can't let you enter if you don't have an invitation. Please leave."
• Nix could not be bothered to reason with them. He nodded at Anvil, and the burly man took one step forward.
• Suddenly, someone from behind them cried out in surprise. "Hey! Isn't that Mr. Jaeger?"
• Nix turned his head around. A man with pomaded hair was approaching him with two men and one woman in tow.
• Nix thought the man looked somewhat familiar, but he could not remember who he was.
• The man smirked. "I guess you must've been too busy to remember my name, Mr. Jaeger. I'm Isaac Risinger, the vice marketing manager you fired in front of the entire company management. Remember me?"
• Nix instantly recalled what the man was talking about.
• In his attempt to win a major client, Isaac forced one of his female employees to drink with the client and even sleep with him. The female employee nearly took her own life because she could not withstand the pressure.
• Nix could see that Isaac had climbed to greater heights in his career. He wondered how many innocent women's lives Isaac had sacrificed to reach where he was.
• Nix regretted only firing him. He should have broken his legs before firing him.
• "Mr. Jaeger, I've heard that you disappeared after losing a power struggle in the company. Now that you're back, are you going to build your business from the ground up? Oh, I remember you said that you don't respect those who gain influence through bootlicking. Are you here to gain some favors with Deputy Mayor Zweiger? That's pretty hypocritical of you, don't you think so?"
• He shook his head with pretend sympathy. "Too bad for you, you can't even score yourself an invitation! Tsk tsk, seeing that we used to be colleagues, why don't I bring you in?"
• Isacc's current status should not have gotten him an invitation to Deputy Mayor Zweiger's birthday party. He only obtained one through much begging and groveling. However, he wanted to show how capable he was to Nix so that he could get back at him.
• His female companion expressed disgust at Isaac's petty attitude.
• Her name was Rosa Hermanez, and she was attending the party today because her friend had dragged her along. She knew about the incident where Nix publicly fired Isaac, and she admired Nix for his assertiveness and principles.
• Now that Nix was down on his luck and could not even offer a retort to Isaac's disparagement, Rosa felt sorry but at the same time indignant about what happened to him.
• "Why do I need you?" Nix said coldly.
• Isaac widened his eyes in surprise before laughing out loud. "Hahaha! I wonder how you can still be so arrogant when you're not even worth anything now! I've also heard that Mr. Kenn Zweiger is getting engaged with your ex-wife, hmm? You can't even convince your wife to stay with you, so where's your pride as a man? If I were you, I'd stay at home so no one will…!"
• Before he could finish his sentence, a slap landed on his cheek.
• Isaac was furious. He covered his cheek and screamed, "How dare you…"
• Nix gave him a backhand slap on the other cheek. "Please, continue."
• Isaac glared at Nix furiously but dared not speak another word.
• The two bodyguards rushed toward Nix. "Halt, troublemaker!"
• Isaac lifted his invitation card up high. "They want to snatch my invitation!"
• The bodyguards snarled and took out their tasers.
• Anvil reached out and grabbed the bodyguards' necks like picking up two kittens. He slammed the bodyguards' heads together, and they slumped on the ground, unconscious.
• Nix walked into the mansion, ignoring the shocked gazes around him.
• "So cool!" Rosa mumbled as she watched Nix walk in. She was clearly infatuated.
• "What's so cool about that? Mr. Zweiger is not going to let him get away with this. We'll see what happens to him in a bit!" Isaac said resentfully.
• He rushed into the mansion to find someone to complain to.
