Chapter 12 Telling the Truth

  • "Mr. Jonah, there's still some time before dinner. How about we go to a cafe and relax for a bit?"
  • "Sure."
  • Jonah nodded slightly, watching the changing scenery outside the car window, his mind filled with thoughts.
  • When they arrived at the cafe, Jesalynn reserved a private room.
  • "Mr. Jonah, we're both about the same age, so I'll get straight to the point." Before the coffee even arrived, Jesalynn handed Jonah a file folder. "Thank you for saving my grandpa. This is a token of appreciation."
  • "OceanBlue Technology? You're giving me company?"
  • Jonah glanced at the folder and couldn't help but size up Jesalynn. OceanBlue Technology is worth a few million, and she's just handing it over like that? What kind of background does she have?
  • "There's also a bank card inside. It's not much, just a small token. Please, you must accept it, otherwise, I won't be able to explain it to my grandpa. He'll scold me to death."
  • Before Jonah could refuse, Jesalynn played the sympathy card, effectively stopping him.
  • "Alright, I'll accept the company, but I really can't take the money," Jonah said, handing the bank card back.
  • "Mr. Jonah, do you want me to get scolded by my grandpa again? I've already been reprimanded for underestimating you and doubting you."
  • Jesalynn put on a pitiful expression, trying to soften Jonah's resolve.
  • "No, I never accept money for treating people," Jonah shook his head firmly. "That's a rule I set for myself, and I can't break it."
  • "You don't take money for treating people?"
  • "Never."
  • "Alright then."
  • Seeing that Jonah wasn't joking, Jesalynn didn't push further. After chatting for a while, she received a phone call and had to leave early, postponing their dinner plans.
  • Jonah didn't mind missing a meal. In fact, he wanted to find Diana and confront her in person, but it was already getting dark by the time he left the cafe, and he had promised his dad they'd visit his uncle that evening, so he had to let it go.
  • "Why are you back so soon? Where's that girl?"
  • When Jonah returned home, Susan craned her neck, looking around with disappointment in her eyes.
  • "Uncle Jonah, did you lose your girlfriend?" Casey joined in with a mischievous grin.
  • "Mom, don't overthink it. I just met her, we're not dating. I helped her out with something, and she came to thank me." Jonah shook his head, half-smiling.
  • "It doesn't matter if she's not your girlfriend. Honestly, I like that classmate of yours, Ivy, from the hospital more. She's kind, beautiful, and so gentle. If it weren't for her help with Casey's treatment, I don't know what we would've done..."
  • At the mention of her grandson's illness, Susan's eyes reddened.
  • "Enough, why bring this up in front of the kid?"
  • At that moment, Leo emerged from the back room, holding a bag of fruit in one hand and leaning on his cane with the other. "Jonah, put your things down, and let's go. Your uncle should be off work by now."
  • "Alright."
  • Without delay, Jonah put the file folder away, took the fruit bag from his dad, and helped him out the door.
  • To save money, they decided to walk, chatting as they went.
  • "Dad, there's something I need to tell you." Jonah hesitated for a moment before speaking.
  • "What is it? Go ahead."
  • "Casey isn't sick. He's been poisoned."
  • "Poisoned? How do you know?" Leo frowned. "I thought he had leukemia?"
  • Jonah shook his head. "Dad, I'm a doctor. The moment I saw Casey, I knew something was off. I spent some time with him this afternoon, and I'm 100 percent sure it's blood mold poisoning, which is a very rare toxin!"
  • "You're a doctor?" Leo looked at his son suspiciously. "But you were in prison for three years. You didn't even finish your degree."
  • "Dad, I wasn't actually in prison. Although I was there for three years, I was working as a prison guard, responsible for overseeing the inmates. During that time, I apprenticed under a master physician and spent three years studying medicine."
  • Jonah decided not to hide the truth from his parents, though he left out anything related to Bonafide.
  • "You've probably seen prisons on TV. With thousands of inmates and poor living conditions, all sorts of diseases break out, so I had plenty of hands-on experience. I'm planning to reopen Clark's Clinic in a little while!"
  • "Are you telling the truth?"
