Chapter 4

  • She arrives just about ten minutes late, the huge metal gate opens, security checks her and asks for her identification, everything goes smoothly until that moment, when one of the guards looks at the side of her car and states the obvious.
  • "You've been hit here."
  • "Don't tell me... "the words come out with so much sarcasm that the man shrinks back and continues checking.
  • "You can go, it's clean "another guard concludes and she thanks him, because her neck is starting to hurt.
  • "Thanks "she hisses annoyed and continues on the path to the house.
  • When she parks in front of the main entrance, she sees the senator and is surprised, because she expected him to be older. She had dedicated herself to reading about the senator's life, but had overlooked the photographs and date of birth, because that didn't interest her, however, it is evident that she made a mistake by not doing so.
  • He is a man of about thirty"five years or less, tall, but not as much as the car wrecker, with brown hair and piercing dark eyes... but not like the irresponsible one who hit her, the one she hasn't stopped thinking about."
  • She walks elegantly towards him, shakes the hand he extends and notices that the man is looking at her car, then looks at her with wide eyes.
  • "You were hit! "he says horrified.
  • "I told you... "but she can't continue her reproach, the senator skips all protocols and approaches her, taking her face in his hands to check for any injuries". I'm fine."
  • "It could be the adrenaline "he assures seriously", let's go inside."
  • He takes her hand, but for a reason that Giselle can't understand, it's not enough for him, so he picks her up in his arms and carries her inside. Another man, surely his assistant, takes the bag and folder she is carrying, takes care of clearing a beautiful Victorian sofa and moves his hands as if directing traffic.
  • In less than a minute, there is a dark brown bag on the coffee table where the senator has sat down, water arrives, painkillers too, and without asking for permission, the senator starts examining her.
  • "What are you doing?! "she says when he points a small flashlight at her eyes"."
  • "Before being a senator, I'm a doctor and you just had an accident, Miss Sparks."
  • "I can go to the clinic later..."
  • "No "he says with a furrowed brow", you should have done that instead of coming here, you've been irresponsible "and he has the nerve to scold her when he was the one who didn't believe her in the first place!"."
  • "I'm afraid I don't understand, sir..."
  • "Call me Evan."
  • "I don't understand your concern now, Evan "she says trying not to hit him when he puts his hands on her neck and moves it". You were the one who didn't believe me about my accident when you called me upset for wasting your valuable time... and I keep doing it, apparently."
  • "Taking care of a patient will never be a waste of time "he takes her wrist to check her pulse and then puts a blood pressure cuff on her". I thought it was an excuse, because you didn't want to come in the first place."
  • The senator's gaze meets hers and Giselle can see genuine concern in the man, although she doesn't understand the reason, since they barely know each other.
  • She lets him do his work in silence, just because she finds it interesting that a doctor ended up as a senator and now has trouble relating to people, although his is due to scandals in his party, still, that man is like a mummy, too dry in his dealings with others.
  • But he hasn't realized that she is the exception.
  • When he finishes examining her, he turns and takes two capsules from the table, hands her the medication, a glass of water, and she takes them without complaining.
  • "You may be experiencing post"traumatic stress, that hit from your car looks pretty bad. Although you didn't hit your head, we should be attentive to the rest of your body. Call me if that happens.
  • "Thank you... but I don't think it's necessary "she sits down and looks him straight in the face, now it's her turn to do her job". I think we should start with our work meeting."
  • "I will accept all the conditions you want," Giselle doesn't understand this change in attitude, she is left speechless, while Evan continues speaking. "If you want one of your collaborators to accompany me, I won't oppose... as long as you and I have a monthly meeting, at least... and you help me with the most important doubts."
  • "Of course," the senator's assistant hands the folder to Giselle, she looks for the contract and hands it to Evan, who signs it without even reading it.
  • "You didn't read it!"
  • "I don't need to," he smiles so sincerely that she truly doesn't understand the abysmal difference between his investigation and this man. "I'm sure that if it comes from you, there is nothing shady or fine print that will harm me," Giselle takes out the copy and hands it to him. "My men will take you home, you need to rest."
  • "Don't worry, I'll go in my car to the company," she says casually, while storing the document.
  • "As your doctor, I order you to go home and rest, a security team will accompany you."
  • "A team? That sounds like a group of men escorting me and it's not necessary, I'm not important," she says with amusement, because not even her father treated her and her younger sister with such care.
  • "Maybe for the rest of mortals you're not... but for me, you are," Evan clears his throat and stands up. "You are my new public relations officer, I need you safe from accidents and other things, because my image depends on you now."
  • "I don't think it's like that," she stands up as well.
  • "It is, I assure you."
  • After a brief handshake, Evan accompanies her to one of his cars, where a driver is waiting for her. Another van is prepared behind that one and Evan helps her get in, fastens her seatbelt, and she is surprised.
  • "I feel like a little girl being scolded."
  • "It's not a scolding, it's my way of saying I'm sorry, I should have believed you when you told me about the accident, you should have gone to the hospital," he holds her hands for a few seconds, smiles, and then walks away. "We'll be in touch, miss. I expect your collaborator tomorrow, in my office, at nine."
  • "He'll be there, thank you for seeing me and for your trust in our company."
  • "You're mistaken, Miss Sparks, my trust is only in you. I hope you rest, it was a pleasure taking care of you."
  • He closes the door, steps back a bit, and the cars head towards Giselle's house. Liam, the senator's assistant, approaches him and hands him a message.
  • "That woman has an aura of intelligence that is not perceived over the phone," Evan says, still watching the vehicles.
  • "If she was able to set aside her integrity to meet with you..."
  • "Correction, my dear Liam, she didn't come to comply, she came because she considered my lack of belief a challenge... and she won."
  • "And I think that's not the only thing she won, sir," Liam looks at his boss and he smiles as he watches the vehicles leave his property.
  • "You're not wrong, Liam," he looks at his assistant, takes the note and sighs as he reads it. "Make sure to have that monthly meeting, ideally at this time and with lunch included."
  • "At a restaurant?"
  • "No, here. I don't want anyone to find out about my intentions with Miss Sparks," he walks to the house and Liam follows closely. "Call the Hunters, tell them I confirm the meeting in their office at two o'clock."
  • "As you wish, sir."
  • Both disappear into the house, while in that car Giselle can't stop looking at her hands, the same hands that the senator held a few minutes ago.
  • She found it a warm, delicate deal, far beyond his role as a doctor.
  • Those beautiful dark eyes stay in her mind for a few more minutes, until they are overshadowed by those gray eyes.
  • "Miss," the man in the passenger seat interrupts her thoughts, "your car will be towed to the mechanic that checks Senator Smith's cars."
  • "That wasn't necessary, the man who hit me should take care of the damages."
  • "The senator feels indebted to you, let him take care of it. Surely by tomorrow, it will be out of your house."
  • A warm smile is the last thing she sees from the man, and everything falls silent again, until she remembers that her phone is still in her car. She will have to wait until she gets home to tell Tomy what happened to her. She should have done it as soon as she got back into her car, but she was so upset at that moment and everything got worse with the senator's call.
  • "Two overwhelming men in less than an hour..." she says to herself. "What strange luck I have."
  • She rests her head on the seat back, closes her eyes, and lets the journey pass as it may. Once home, she can resume her activities without any problem.
  • That is, if those gray eyes let her.
