  • She shrugged. "I was involved in other things, I suppose; other endeavors and priorities, which didn't pan out." She swallowed. "And anyway," she sighed, "my… ex-husband wasn't much for traveling. He always complained everything was too far away."
  • Theodore's upper lip twisted into a scowl. "Forgive me, but your ex-husband sounds like an uncultured and undereducated idiot."
  • She had been sipping on her last bit of coffee, and she choked. Theodore firmly yet carefully patted her back, and even though the blouse and knit sweater she wore on that crisp, fall morning, his touch burned her in a way she hadn't burned in a long, long time.
