Chapter 7
- Elena’s POV.
- I still couldn't stop thinking about yesterday. He was the last person I ever thought of seeing and most especially, I couldn't help but worry how long they have been watching me.
- “How did he know of my two adorable twin angels?” I scowled agonizingly as I did the dishes.
- It was completely impossible to think straight right now. I had dropped them off at school an hour ago now, the only thing I could think of was running away secretly again.
- I wasn't ready to face him yet. “What about Maya?” “Did they break up?” I felt this joy linger within me as I shook it off. “Why was it a thing to be happy about?” I cursed within as I rinsed the plates.
- “Elena?” Marie's voice pulled me back to reality as I cleaned my hands.
- “Oh! Marie.” I mumbled as I feigned a smile. “You didn't go to work today?” I questioned as I looked at her.
- “Work?” She said disappointedly, shaking her head as she rubbed her forehead with her right hand. “What exactly is wrong with you, Elena? How do you expect me to go to work after I punched a customer who was deliberately mean towards one of our teen customers?” She snapped at me.
- “Oh, yeah, yeah! I remember now.” I rolled my eyes.
- It was impossible for me to think straight now. All I could think about was why Rex was here in New Kingston and what he wants from me.
- “Since you met that stranger yesterday, you have been acting differently. What are you hiding?” She scowled as she dropped the beverages she came in with on the table.
- “It's nothing, trust me.” I responded quickly.
- “No! I know you Elena. And when you use that “trust me” word, there's absolutely a whole lot of things you are trying to hide.” Marie sneered as she held my shoulders.
- “Look at me, Elena. You know you can tell me anything?” She said calmly which did nothing but break through my defense. “Who… is the… stranger?” She asked again as she had me sit down on the couch.
- “He is just someone from my past. It's absolutely nothing to worry about, Marie.” I shuddered, feeling cold and this sharp pain that came with it.
- “You know, for a second, I saw this striking resemblance between them. But then, he looks wealthy and I had to brush it off.” Marie muttered as she looked at me.
- I rolled my eyes this time around as tears swelled up, blurring my vision for a while. “Yes, he's their father!” I broke down as I got up from the couch. “He is their father and there's absolutely no way I would let him right back into my life.” I cursed.
- I couldn't continue with the lie of him running away after I told him I was carrying his children. Marie sat down, still in shock as she couldn't believe what I just said to her.
- “And what do you plan doing now?” She asked as she looked at me.
- “Run! I will leave New Kingston!!” I responded as I wiped off my tears.
- “Run? Are you insane? How long do you intend running?” She snapped in refusal. “There is no way I am letting you run away.” She sneered as she got up.
- “He can't just show up in my life and expect me to be happy about that. I know why he is here. He is only here because of the kids, not me!!” I cursed as I looked at Marie.
- “Think about them? How do you think they will feel when they finally get to know that he is their biological father? Do you think they will still love you? Do you think they will love you from robbing them of their father's love and presence in their life? Huh!? Tell me Elena!!” She scowled, screaming at the top of her voice.
- “He doesn't deserve to be their father! I am only concerned about their happiness. And I have stayed for five years, making sure that I provide every single thing they want. I am fine without him and so are they too.” I snapped as tears gathered in my eyes.
- “Just look how cute they are. What if he isn't just here because of the kids? What if he is here because of you?” She probed as she picked up the picture frame that rested on the TV stand as tears gathered up in her eyes.
- “Can we not do this now?” I turned my back against her as I felt sharp pains in my heart. “Do you know how exactly it feels when the one man you came to love from a very young age abandons you for his ex? Same ex he vouched he would never return to? He broke me, Marie!” I whimpered, cursing bitterly as I couldn't hold the tears anymore.
- For five years, I have avoided remembering why I came to New Kingston. For five years, I never for once thought about Rex's betrayal of the love he professed but right now, I just couldn't help but think about how he had chased me away from his pack too.
- “Running away isn't the best choice, Elena. I know you don't want to have anything to do with him but you have stayed here for five good years. You could reject whatever proposal he makes. You can't keep running because of one man. And there's absolutely no way I'm letting you take my godson and goddaughter away from me. No way!” She snapped as she turned me round as she locked her eyes with mine.
- “I understand how you feel, I really do. But you are already building a life here. I want you to cheer up. There's a job opening, there's a beautiful life out here in Kingston and you don't just expect me to say goodbye because your husband shows up all of a sudden.” She scowled, forcing a smile as she looked at me.
- “Ex-husband.” I snapped immediately.
- But was I over him yet?
