Chapter 3
- Beta Leo sat beside Maya, their den illuminated by the soft glow of the fire. The heaviness of Alpha Asher's absence hung in the air like a tangible presence, but Leo was determined to be there for Maya, to offer whatever comfort and support he could in her time of need.
- "Maya," he began gently, breaking the silence that had settled between them, "I know this is hard, but you're not alone. We're all here for you."
- Maya nodded, her eyes still red-rimmed from crying, but a flicker of gratitude shining in their depths. "Thank you, Leo," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don't know what I would do without you."
- Leo reached out a hand, squeezing Maya's gently in a gesture of solidarity. "We'll get through this together," he vowed, his voice filled with determination. "I promise."
- For a moment, they sat in silence, drawing strength from each other's presence as they grappled with the enormity of their loss. But soon, Maya broke the silence, her voice trembling slightly as she spoke.
- "Leo, do you think... Do you think it was the Necci Luna Pack?" she asked, her words hesitant but filled with a quiet intensity.
- Leo's brow furrowed in thought as he considered Maya's question. The Necci Luna Pack had long been their rivals, their territory bordering on theirs and tensions often running high between the two packs. Could they have been behind the attack on Alpha Asher?
- "It's possible," Leo admitted, his voice grave. "They've been eyeing our territory for a while now, looking for any opportunity to weaken us."
- Maya's eyes flashed with anger, her grief momentarily forgotten in the face of the possibility that their rivals were responsible for her father's death. "Those cowards," she spat, her claws digging into the earth beneath her. "To attack us like this, when we're at our most vulnerable..."
- Leo nodded in agreement, his own anger simmering just beneath the surface. "We can't let them get away with this," he declared, his voice filled with resolve. "We have to find out the truth, for Asher's sake and for the safety of our pack."
- Maya's gaze softened as she looked at Leo, gratitude shining in her eyes. "Thank you, Leo," she said, her voice filled with sincerity. "I don't know what I would do without you."
- Leo smiled, a warmth spreading through his chest at Maya's words. "I'll always be here for you, Maya," he promised, his voice soft but unwavering. "No matter what."
- Together, they sat by the fire, their minds buzzing with thoughts of the future and the challenges that lay ahead. But in that moment, they found solace in each other's company, drawing strength from their bond as they prepared to face whatever trials awaited them.
- As the fire crackled and popped, casting dancing shadows on the walls of their den, Maya and Leo knew that the road ahead would be difficult, fraught with danger and uncertainty. But they also knew that as long as they had each other, they could weather any storm, their love and loyalty to each other and their pack guiding them through even the darkest of times.

- Nicklaus stood at a distance, hidden among the shadows of the trees, his gaze fixed on the scene unfolding before him. He watched as Beta Leo sat beside Maya, offering her words of comfort and support in the wake of her father's death. A pang of jealousy twisted in his chest as he observed the intimate exchange, wishing with all his heart that he could be the one to hold Maya in his arms, to chase away her pain and sorrow.
- But he knew that it was not his place. He was just a bodyguard, tasked with protecting Maya and ensuring her safety in a world filled with danger and uncertainty. She was the alpha's daughter, a position of power and privilege that set her apart from the rest of the pack. And though Nicklaus had known Maya since they were pups, their friendship had always been tempered by the boundaries of their respective roles within the pack hierarchy.
- As he watched Leo comfort Maya, Nicklaus couldn't help but feel a twinge of bitterness at the unfairness of it all. He had spent countless hours by Maya's side, training with her, laughing with her, sharing in her triumphs and failures. And yet, when she needed someone the most, it was Beta Leo who was there for her, offering her the solace and support that Nicklaus could only dream of providing.
- He clenched his fists, his jaw set in a stubborn line as he forced himself to look away, unable to bear the sight any longer. It wasn't fair, he thought bitterly, that Maya should have to suffer alone while he stood helplessly on the sidelines, relegated to the role of a mere bystander.
- But even as his heart ached with longing, Nicklaus knew that he could not abandon his duty to Maya, no matter how much it pained him to see her in pain. He had sworn an oath to protect her with his life, and he would do whatever it took to fulfill that promise, even if it meant sacrificing his own happiness in the process.
- With a heavy sigh, Nicklaus turned away from the scene, his steps heavy as he made his way back to his post. The night stretched on, the moon casting its silvery light over the forest as Nicklaus stood vigil, his thoughts consumed by the image of Maya and the longing that gnawed at his heart.
- But amidst the pain and the bitterness, there was also a glimmer of hope, a determination to be there for Maya in whatever capacity he could. For though he may never be able to offer her the comfort and solace she deserved, he would always be there, watching over her from the shadows, ready to lay down his life to keep her safe. And in that quiet, solitary vigil, Nicklaus found a measure of peace, knowing that even if he could not be the one to comfort Maya, he could still be her protector, her guardian, her steadfast companion in a world filled with darkness and uncertainty.
