Chapter 4 No Authority Over the Death Rune

  • Both the father and son heard that strange yet vaguely familiar voice, but they couldn't place who it was.
  • They hadn't seen one another in six years, so it stood to reason that they couldn't remember that Jett, who was now in front of them, was the voice they were hearing.
  • They finally recognized Jett when he turned around.
  • "J-Jett Grayson, you're supposed to be in jail. You've escaped!" Huxley exclaimed in surprise.
  • "Hmph!" Jett rubbed his chin and grinned contemptuously. "You're scared. Are you afraid that what happened back then will be revealed, so you can't wait to throw me back in jail?"
  • "What a farce. Someone like you?"
  • Huxley laughed in an impudent manner. "Jett Grayson, who doesn't know you're a bastard? You also married into your wife's family. That's right. You are also a thief and a rapist! Now you are an escaped prisoner!"
  • Jett locked his gaze on Huxley, and the temperature in the hall dropped sharply as his eyes flashed with murderous intent.
  • He raised his right foot and kicked Huxley in the knee.
  • Nobody anticipated his direct attack.
  • Huxley howled and keeled over on the ground the next second. His entire body shook as he dropped to his knees.
  • "You dare to strike me! What audacity you have! I'm going to kill you!"
  • "Boom!"
  • Jett swung his leg up in a perfect arc, landing perfectly on his head. The direct blow to his head was enough to send him into a senseless daze.
  • "Shut up!"
  • "I'll kill you once I figure out what's going on."
  • "Dad!" With his earlier arrogance long gone, Huxley howled while convulsing in pain as he lay on the ground.
  • "Jett! How dare you! Do you not fear being apprehended and incarcerated once more?" Gabriel roared angrily when he saw his son get deposed in an instant.
  • Jett was also giving him a scathing look at the same time, and when their eyes met, a sense of superiority instantly emanated from him like a grand waterfall with raging water.
  • "It is wrong for a father only to feed his child and not teach him! He is who he is today because of you, and you bear the most responsibility as the father. So…”
  • "Slap him across the mouth for me, Bernard!"
  • Bernard stepped forward and raised his large, calloused hand. Then he swung at him.
  • "Smack! Smack! Smack!"
  • After three slaps, Gabriel's mouth was covered in blood, and even his teeth flew out.
  • Gabriel put his hand over his face. He hadn't expected the other party to be so direct. He was in a daze after getting slapped.
  • Gabriel came to his senses after a long time. His eyes were red, and he stomped angrily as he shouted, "Guards! Die! Let them all die! Beat them until they die!"
  • The Lacewell family's security guards filed out, holding baseball bats.
  • When Bernard noticed the approaching guards, he remained unfazed. He clasped his hands together and cracked his knuckles.
  • His body flickered, and all the security guards were knocked to the ground in the blink of an eye.
  • "Clank!" One could even hear a pin drop!
  • The silence in the hall at this moment was unnerving!
  • The shock the two had brought with them was too much for anyone to bear, and no one dared to provoke them.
  • Promptly, Jett produced the gift box. "I heard that today is your fiftieth birthday. I've got a gift for you!"
  • When the gift box was opened, a piece of yellow paper was inside. The yellow paper was covered in densely packed runes, with a birth chart in the right corner.
  • It was Gabriel's birth chart.
  • It was a death rune!
  • Onlookers in a crowd saw the unique gift.
  • "Tsk! A death rune!"
  • "What? A death rune!"
  • The earlier silence was broken suddenly, as though by an exploding pressure cooker!
  • He had given a death rune at Gabriel's birthday banquet. It was clearly done on purpose.
  • "That guy is dead meat! He dared to offend the Lacewells so openly!"
  • "He must have a deep-seated hatred for the rich! This person will bite anyone wealthy, just like a rabid dog!"
  • Looking at this gift, Gabriel clenched his teeth and was about to erupt in rage.
  • For decades, no one had dared to offend the Lacewell family, but he was repeatedly made a fool of today.
  • He and his son were assaulted at the birthday banquet he hosted for himself, and the young master of the Dickens family was killed. He was also given a death rune.
  • Any of the reasons were sufficient for the Lacewell family to annihilate the opposing party.
  • However, now was not the time.
  • He was a wise man. It would be reckless of him to kill the other party now. There would still be plenty of opportunities in the future.
  • Elliot was leading a team of police officers over at the time.
  • "It's these two, Officer Smith. Not only did they assault people, but they also killed someone. They have absolutely no regard for the law!"
  • He had secretly called Officer Smith, who had the best rapport with the Lacewell family, earlier when he had noticed something wasn't right.
  • Jett glanced at Bernard, and Bernard got it right away. He went over and used his body to form a shield for himself and Jett.
  • "Apprehend them and take them away!" Officer Smith motioned with his hand to the police officers behind him to cuff them without asking why.
  • Bernard drew a small booklet from his pocket and tossed it over.
  • "Sir, you are not qualified to be in charge!" he declared coldly.
  • Officer Smith laughed instead of becoming enraged. He was not interested in reading the small booklet that Bernard had thrown over.
  • The booklet was small and dark green. At first glance, he mistook it for a phone book. It had a weathered, aged appearance.
  • "I'm not qualified to be in charge? I'm the District Chief of Police. You've committed crimes, so I'm authorized to arrest you. I will arrest anyone, even the mayor of Cleckherville, no exceptions!"
  • It was inspiring to hear Officer Smith speak with righteousness and dignity, and it sounded like he was a great role model for someone in the civil service.
  • "Well said. We in Cleckherville are extremely fortunate to have police officers like Officer Smith who uphold the law justly. Cleckherville is safe because of officers like Officer Smith who are selfless in their service to the community."
  • "That's right. Attaboy, Office Smith! A murderer and escaped convict like him must never be tolerated."
  • "Yes, arrest him and make him pay for taking another person's life with his own."
  • The spectators immediately began to move as the police formed a line, complimenting Officer Smith and disparaging both Jett and Bernard in various ways.
  • Officer Smith smiled, a little flustered, when he heard those words.
  • Elliot also jumped out and yelled, "Quit your acts! Officer Smith is the third most powerful member of the Cleckherville Police Department. Let's see what other troubles you can cause."
  • "Officer Smith, you see how arrogant they are after killing someone. They require good handling from you."
  • He despised Jett to his core. He had been slapped, punched, and had his arm broken. He was thrilled to have such a wonderful chance to exact revenge on him via the police. He was eagerly anticipating the moment when the police would arrest the two of them.
  • "Officer Smith, you must resolve this for us. These two perps hurt my son and me and even killed Rolf Dickens. That is something that everyone here can attest to."
  • Gabriel rushed over, his face red and swollen, and his speech slurred due to his toothache.
  • Officer Smith noticed everyone nodding and said, "Did you notice that? Witnesses and physical evidence are present. The people's rage won't be subdued if you're not taken down. What qualifications do I have then as a civil servant? Take them away!"
  • "Hold on! Officer Smith, have you even read this?" Bernard gently reminded him by pointing to the small booklet in his hand. "I recommend that you read it before making any decisions."
  • "I'm not going to look at it. Do you believe you can threaten me by providing false evidence? I've seen a lot of people like you. You think you're so clever, don't you?"
  • "Take them away!"
  • Bernard did not become enraged. Instead, he revealed a cold smile and said, "It's better to read it!"
  • Officer Smith lightly pinched his temple with his right hand. He thought it was odd and wondered why the other party was so confident!
  • If they were regular murderers or fugitives, they would not have been so level-headed when they saw him.
  • "Fine, I'll give you one chance."
  • He put down his right hand and gingerly opened the small booklet.
  • "If…"
  • Officer Smith did not finish his sentence. He initially believed that he had misread it, so he forced a hard blink and took a close look.
  • Boom! It was as if a lightning bolt had struck him in the head.
  • "Name: Bernard Kennedy, Gender: Male, Age: Twenty-five, Position: Colonel, affiliated to the Imperial Wolves."
  • Is this fake? That was the first thought that came to mind.
  • He raised his head and gave Bernard a once-over. Then, as he did so, he looked down and saw that the booklet had a steel seal that read, "Imperial Wolves, the most powerful and most covert special warfare organization in the Freedonia Empire." More importantly, the steel seal was uneven to the touch.
  • Then, this cannot be fake. That means he is…
  • A colonel. A twenty-five-year-old colonel and a member of the Imperial Wolves.
  • Officer Smith felt as if he had fallen into an ice cellar at this point. Given his position, he was aware of the nature of the organization.
  • He went numb. He sneaked a glance at Jett, and the aura he gave off pierced his heart. Could it be that he was higher in rank than the colonel? Was he the general? He couldn't bring himself to believe it!
  • His understanding of the other party's identity came to him while he was still in a daze. Even the mayor of Cleckherville, not to mention himself, would have to keep his head down when he met the two. What more when he was only a captain of a city branch?
  • Officer Smith closed the booklet immediately. With the notebook still in both of his hands, he bowed slightly and respectfully gave it to Bernard.
  • Bernard took the booklet back and whispered something in his ear.
  • Officer Smith kept nodding his head like a chicken pecking at grains. The cold sweat on his back had already soaked through his shirt.
  • "My apologies. I'm leaving right now!"
  • Officer Smith motioned to the other officers and left the scene as soon as he finished speaking.
  • "This..." The onlookers couldn't believe what they were witnessing.
  • He had made an imposing entrance earlier, and now, as he was leaving with his tail between his legs, the onlookers were left with nothing but questions.
