Chapter 11 Daddy Is Bringing You Home

  • Bernard grew concerned when he noticed Jett motionless.
  • "Are you all right, Mr. Grayston?" he probed.
  • The man burst into laughter and patted Bernard on the arm. "Haha! Bernard, Mylah is my daughter. She's my daughter! My daughter is alive! I found my daughter!" Tears welled up in his eyes as he said excitedly, "Mylah, my dearest daughter! Daddy has finally found you! I considered adopting you as my goddaughter. Little did I know that you are my real daughter."
  • Jett thought, you were born after seven months and thrown into the slums to fend for yourself. You've spent the first six years of your life without the care and concern of your parents. My daughter doesn't deserve all these sufferings. She's just an innocent child. You shall pay for your sins, Bryson White. Don't worry, you shall have a slow painful death. I've never hated anyone so much. If you weren't a relative of Chloe, I would have killed you last night.
  • "Congratulations, Mr. Grayston. You've found your daughter!" Bernard smiled.
  • "Let's head to the hospital right now!" Jett said merrily.
  • The two men immediately made their way to the hospital. To their surprise, the ward was empty.
  • Jett's exhilaration had been replaced by anxiety and bewilderment. "What exactly is going on? What happened to Mylah? Where could she possibly be in the middle of the night?"
  • Bernard felt that something was amiss and hurriedly went to search around the hospital. Mr. Grayston has just found his daughter. I can't let anything bad happen to Mylah.
  • Despite searching all the wards, toilets, stairwells, and the pantry on the level, Bernard still could not locate the little girl. He then carried on his search to the next level.
  • "Where are you, Mylah? Please be all right! We've just reunited. I can't let anything bad happen to you. Mylah…" Jett uttered to himself as he scoured the floors, attempting to wipe the heavy beads of sweat off his face.
  • Drip! Drip!
  • The saline droplets fell to the ground in the eerily quiet corridors.
  • "Where are you, Mylah? This isn't going to work. I'm heading to the control room to watch the footage of the surveillance cameras." Jett raised his head to inspect the signboards before quickly entering the elevator to reach the floor.
  • Suddenly, he heard a high-pitched voice. "Is that you, Superman?"
  • "Superman? Oh my gosh! It's Mylah!" Jett turned around eagerly. To his disappointment, there was no one in sight.
  • Was that my hallucination? No, I clearly heard Mylah's voice. Jett took a step out of the elevator and called out, "Is that you Mylah?"
  • "I'm here, Superman! Haha!" Mylah emerged from the hiding nook and approached him with a sly grin.
  • Jett immediately rushed toward the little girl and hugged her tightly in his embrace, afraid that she would disappear once again.
  • "Haha! It's so late, Uncle Superman. Why aren't you asleep? Ms. Kimberley said that you need to sleep to grow taller," Mylah said cheekily, revealing her cute dimples and pearly white teeth.
  • "She's right. You can't grow if you don't sleep at night. Why aren't you asleep? Did you know I was so worried when I found you missing in your room?" Jett said disapprovingly.
  • The little girl blushed and stuck her tongue out in defiance. "Hehe! I heard the lady next door say that there will be shooting stars at ten o'clock. Ms. Kimberley said that if you wish upon a shooting star, your wish will come true! I went to see the stars and made a wish."
  • "Shooting stars?" Jett repeated. He recalled that he, too, had made a wish. Thankfully, his wish to find his child came true.
  • Jett gave the child a loving glance, but he decided it was not the right moment to announce that he was her father. Curious about the wish that the little girl made, he asked, "Can you tell me what's your wish, Mylah?"
  • She shook her head frantically and widened her large watery eyes to take in her surroundings. She then pressed her finger to her lips and whispered, "Shh! Ms. Kimberley cautioned that if we express our wishes, they will not be granted."
  • Jett chuckled at Mylah's comical antics and rubbed her nose as he teased, "What a cheeky little fella! But I got to admit Ms. Kimberley is really smart, and you are so obedient!" After a short pause, he continued, "It's all right if you can't reveal your wish. I shall make a guess then!"
  • "Okay! I love playing guessing games!" Mylah said excitedly. She was always overjoyed when someone offered to play games with her.
  • "I guess that you want to grow up quickly!" Jett said.
  • "Hmm? No!" Mylah shook her head. "Wrong! Guess again!"
  • Jett continued, "You want many toys!"
  • "Mylah? Mylah?" Jett called out when the little girl went quiet. When he felt her head pressed against his chest, he realized she was sleeping.
  • "Mr. Grayston! Mr. Grayston. There isn't…" Bernard ran toward Jett and said breathlessly. Before he could continue, the latter interrupted, "Shh! Send us home."
  • Mylah stirred gently in Jett's arms and then became silent again as if startled by the sounds. A short while later, she spoke, "Oh, shooting star, shooting star. I wish to know when I can see my Daddy and Mommy again. Everyone has their parents, except me. I want my Daddy and Mommy too!"
  • Jett's eyes welled up with tears as he thought to himself, don't worry, Mylah. You'll have Daddy and Mommy too. Not only Daddy and Mommy, but Uncle, Aunt, Grandpa, and Grandma too! Daddy will bring you home first, and we shall find Mommy in a couple of days.
  • It was late in the night and the house was quiet. Kimberley decided to look for Jett at his bedroom when she saw that his door was ajar.
  • "Mylah?" she said in astonishment.
  • "Hmm?" Jett opened his eyes when he heard a sound. His years of training in the military had caused him to be sensitive to any noise.
  • "Why did you bring Mylah home, Jett?" Kimberley asked when she noticed the man had awoken. She pointed to the bed and continued, "Isn't this a little hasty? Why are you so eager to adopt her as your goddaughter?"
  • Jett collected the DNA report and presented it to Kimberley. Before she could study the documents, she was chased out of the room. When she was finally able to read the report, she gazed up at Jett, her mouth open.
  • After a brief moment, she finally spoke, "Is this for real, Jett?"
  • "Of course it's real. It's a DNA report!" the man replied.
  • "I'm going to be an aunt! Haha, no wonder I always felt an odd sense of familiarity with Mylah. She's such an obedient child. I never knew that she's my niece! Haha!" Kimberley cracked a silly grin.
  • Astor, who had heard his daughter's chatter, slowly made his way to join the duo. Even though his body was still weak, his spirits had drastically improved. After a day of rest, he was able to stand on his feet and move around with the help of his support stick.
  • "Why are you so happy, Kimberley? It's in the wee hours of the night!" Astor asked gleefully.
  • The woman immediately went over to support her father and whispered in his ears, "Dad, I'm going to be aunt! You are going to be a grand uncle!"
  • "What's happening?" he asked in confusion.
  • "Look, Dad!" Kimberely said excitedly.
  • Astor's attention switched from the DNA results to Jett, who gave a slight nod.He briefly informed them of Chloe's pregnancy, but avoided going into specifics out of concern of upsetting his uncle. He thought that keeping an upbeat and pleasant mood was essential to a quick recovery.
  • Astor was ecstatic to learn the good news. He mumbled, "Did you see that, lil sis. Jett is doing so well. Everything is going to be fine. You may rest in peace."
