Chapter 8 Chloe Has Insomnia

  • "I'll never let anyone hurt my wife and all of you again." Jett announced before leaving the room.
  • With her mouth agape, Janet watched as the silhouette of a tall, well-built man disappeared. She whispered to Alex, "Was… was that Jett, the useless fool? Why does he seem like a completely different person?"
  • The man seated on the sofa was also appalled by Jett's imposing aura. He placed his palm on his chest to calm his racing heart. Next, he turned to Janet and asked, "Should we tell Chloe?"
  • "Let's see what happens. However, he doesn't seem to be lying. I'm worried that Bryson was speaking the truth. We'll be in trouble if he's a fugitive on the run." Janet shifted her gaze from her daughter to Alex and sighed. "For Chloe's sake, we shouldn't take the risk."
  • "All right! We'll hide the truth from Chloe even if she asks about the matter." The couple nodded in unison.
  • Meanwhile, Chloe was staring at the gate in a daze. She was perplexed by the mysterious man's appearance.
  • "Why did he insist that I was his wife? Is it true? I found the shadow oddly familiar, but…"
  • She rolled her big, brown eyes as she tried to jog her memories. Even after hitting her head repeatedly, she could not remember anything about the man.
  • Feeling helpless, Chloe turned to the sofa and asked, "Mum, do I know that man?"
  • Janet clutched her daughter's hand and stroked her silky hair with the other. "Did you get a scare, Chloe? We don't know him. There… there's something wrong with him. Don't worry about it."
  • Chloe pointed to her head and clarified, "Here?"
  • "Yeah, I guess." Janet decided to conjure an excuse to fool her daughter.
  • "Darling, get the broom for me, will you? I'll sweep up the remains of the broken table. I can't believe we were so unlucky to have met a lunatic!" Alex interrupted his daughter on purpose and looked at the table heartbroken.
  • "All right!" Janet replied before turning to her daughter and whispering, "It's late. Go get some rest, Chloe."
  • Chloe relented since she did not think she could receive any answers to her queries. She opened the medicinal bottle on her table and popped two pills into her mouth.
  • For the last six years, Chloe had made it a habit to take two pills before going to bed each night. She would take in the stillness of the night as she stared up at the ceiling.
  • "I'm back, Chloe! I'm Jett, your husband! Don't worry, Alex and Janet. I'll never let anyone hurt Chloe and both of you again."
  • Chloe had insomnia for the first time in six years. Her mind was whirling with questions. Who is he? Why am I unable to recall anything about him? Dad and Mom seem to be hiding something from me…
  • After leaving the White residence, Bryson hurried straight to the hospital. He took an hour to treat his injuries, arriving home at ten at night. Alex was shocked by his appearance and instinctively used the broom for self-defense. Bryson looked like an ancient mummy with his white suit and head bandaged, revealing only his eyes.
  • The man stepped back and spoke slurringly because of his wounds, "It's me, Dad! I'm Bryson!" He knew that anyone who saw his dreadful state would be startled. He, too, was horrified when he saw his bandaged look.
  • Bryson seethed inwardly, this is all Jett Grayson's fault! He's the reason for my miserable state. I swear to take revenge on him!
  • He was overwhelmed by rage as he considered the several ways to torture Jett. He pledged to punish his adversary until he begged for his life. After he was happy with the torment, he would toss Jett in jail. Not only would he receive gratification from torturing his enemy, but he would also receive praise for his efforts to arrest a fugitive. It was the perfect opportunity to advance the Whites in society.
  • Alex put the broom aside and dashed over to his son. "Bryson? What happened? Why did you end up in this state?"
  • "It's Jett's fault! That loser escaped from prison, and the moment he saw me, he punched me for no reason. I was almost disfigured," Bryson sobbed.
  • Alex widened his eyes in disbelief. "Did you say that Jett escaped from prison and he hit you?"
  • "Yeah, Dad! You need to help me catch him so I can torture him to death. I'm going to kill that man!" Even though it was hard to observe Bryson's facial expression, his tone conveyed his rage and frustration.
  • "All right, I promise you. Don't get angry and focus on recovering from your injuries!" Alex assured. He was the current CEO of White Corporation, a third-tier company in Cleckherville. Over the years, he navigated his company through numerous trials and challenges to build his reputation to where it was today. He was infuriated to learn that Jett had shown blatant disrespect for his son, and he immediately called for his men to teach him a lesson.
  • How dare he hit my son! I swear to make him pay for his actions! He shall suffer a fate worse than death!
  • Alex made a phone call after considerable deliberation. When the receiver answered the phone, his face lit up. "How have you been, Elliot? I wonder if you would be keen to help me teach someone a lesson. We can discuss the price for the job."
  • "Who's the unlucky fella, Mr. White? There isn't a need to talk about money, given our close relations!" Elliot said merrily.
  • Elliot Hall used to be a nobody. When the Dickens family handed him responsibilities, he began to establish his reputation.
  • You say that all the time. Yet, when the job is done, you charge an exorbitant sum. Alex only resigned to grumbling in his heart as he still had to rely on Elliot for underhand means.
  • "You're too kind, Elliot. His name is Jett Grayson, a fugitive on the run. I think it will be effortless for you to find him. I want you to bring him to me alive," Alex explained.
  • "What did you say his name was again?" Elliot asked, wondering if he had heard the name wrong.
  • Thinking that the man was hard of hearing, Alex repeatedly himself slowly this time. "Jett Grayson. What's wrong? He's just a fugitive!"
  • "Are you out of your mind, Alex White? Don't drag me into your bullshit. I don't want to die so early!" Elliot shouted into the phone before cutting the call short.
  • I thought there would be a lucrative job for me. Who knew that it was to teach Jett Grayson a lesson? The man's name is imprinted in my mind; he's someone I'm staying clear of. I was right there when he killed Mr. Rolf. I still remember the murderous look and vicious attack on the poor man. Even the police were out of their wits and chose to hide in a corner. Anyone who wants to challenge Jett Grayson must have a death wish!
  • Meanwhile, Alex was perplexed by Elliot's strong reaction. He was yelled at for offering the man a job and a handsome reward. He wondered, why did Elliot violently reject my request?
  • It was evident that Alex had not seen the fearless and ruthless Jett. He complained, "Elliot is such a useless bastard. It's not like I'm not paying him for the job. What a coward! Why is he so afraid of Jett, the fugitive? Since he's not up to the task, I'm getting someone else to do it."
  • He then made another phone call while clearly in a good mood. After the call ended, he said joyfully, "Don't worry, Son. Darren Mackey has accepted the job. You can focus on your recovery so that you are well enough to teach Jett Grayson a lesson!"
