Chapter 10 Wishing Upon a Shooting Star

  • Janet looked at her daughter seated at the dining table, and asked worriedly, "Are you okay, Chloe? Look at those panda eyes, have you been up all night browsing Twitter?"
  • "Chloe? Chloe?" she probed again after receiving no response.
  • "Hmm. Yes, Mom? What's the matter?" Chloe came back to her sense and stared at her mother blankly. "Don't worry about me. I've finished my meal. I'm going out for a walk."
  • Before Janet could reply, Chloe had disappeared out of sight. She turned to Alex and said, "Old coot, don't you think there's something wrong with Chloe?"
  • The man nodded as he ate his breakfast. "Do you think Chloe will look for Shirley to ask about Jett?"
  • "Oh no! I need to call Shirley and warn her about this. It took us so many years to get Chloe to forget about Jett. We can't let her remember the past," Janet said in alarm. She immediately whipped out her phone and called Shirley Quinn.
  • Janet had spent the entire night mulling over Jett's words. The more she thought about it, the more worried she got. She was skeptical about his promise and felt the man was untrustworthy. Instead of risking her daughter's safety and lifelong happiness, Janet would rather ensure that Chloe stayed clear of Jett. They even went through the trouble of changing their place of stay to avoid triggering unhappy memories,
  • Unfortunately, Janet was not aware that Jett was an overly-protective man. Given his current status and prestige, his presence was sufficient to intimidate those around him; many would fear incurring his wrath.
  • "Hello! Aunt Janet? What's the matter?" A sweet voice sounded over the phone, interrupting Janet's thoughts.
  • "Oh, hello, Shirley! It's nothing important. Chloe said that she was heading out this morning but we've no idea where she went. I'm guessing that she'll be looking for you. If she asks about Jett, please pretend you don't anything about him. I heard that he escaped from jail." Janet intentionally leaked the news to Shirley.
  • "Oh! Okay, Aunt Janet. Don't worry, my lips are sealed." Shirley patted her chest to calm her nerves.
  • Ding Dong!
  • Shirley received a text message from Chloe. Hey Bestie! I'm taking a cab to your place. Be there in twenty minutes! Love you!.
  • She thought in amusement, Aunt Janet is a prophet!
  • After hanging up the phone, Shirley stared blankly into space for a minute as she sorted through her thoughts.
  • I can't believe Jett Grayson escaped from jail. How did Chloe know about it? Have they met? This sounds disastrous. I recall how depressed Chloe was at first when Jett departed. However, one day she just stopped being unhappy and never mentioned him again. What's going to happen now?
  • Meanwhile, Janet sighed and turned to Alex after hanging up the call. "Okay, I spoke to Shirley and she promised to mind her words. Why are we so unlucky? My poor daughter."
  • As he stared at his wife's anguish, the guy mournfully shook his head; unable to find the perfect words to say, he opted to lay a reassuring hand on Janet's shoulder.
  • Chloe decided to pay her best friend, Shirley, a visit. They had known each other since they were kids and she was her closest confidant. Unlike her parents, Shirley would never hide anything from her. Chloe was determined to discover who Jett Grayson was and how they were linked. It made no sense that everyone in her family but her knew who he was. She sat in the cab, biting her lip and staring out the window, lost in her thoughts.
  • "We've arrived, Miss," the driver chirped.
  • Chloe smiled awkwardly as she jumped slightly at his sudden announcement. She got out of the cab after paying and calmed herself down before heading to Shirley's house.
  • "Hi Bestie, I'm here! Do you miss me?" Chloe skipped to Shirley with her arms wide open.
  • Her best friend was a tall, lanky beauty who was sought after by many guys. Her pink outfit emphasized her curves, while her long wavy hair and vivid red lipstick matched her well-defined features.
  • "It's been a few days since we last met. There's no need to be mesmerized by my beauty. Those who aren't familiar with us may think you have the hots for me," Shirley teased.
  • Chloe rolled her eyes and asked, "Don't you miss me?"
  • "You? Is there something wrong?" Shirley was reminded of Janet's words when she saw Chloe's troubled look. She was not one to beat around the bush.
  • The woman blushed red as if she had been caught in the act. "Is it really that obvious? Don't I always look like that?"
  • Shirley shrugged her shoulders as she made her way to the sofa. "Doesn't matter. What brings you here?"
  • "Well, nothing much. I wanted to ask you about a person. No lies, please," Chloe replied seriously, shaking her fist to emphasize the gravity of the situation.
  • "All right. I promise to speak nothing but the truth, Bestie!" Shirley sang.
  • "He… he's called Jett Grayson. Do you know him?" Chloe stood in front of Shirley and stared intently at her friend.
  • Shirley thought, luckily Aunt Janet cautioned me about this so I can prepare myself beforehand. Otherwise, I'm likely to spill the beans. I'm sorry, Chloe. I can't tell you the truth. It's for your own good. We can talk about this when you are ready.
  • She let out a laugh and replied, "Why should I be familiar with him if you don't know him? We're great friends, and you know everyone I know."
  • She saw a flicker of disappointment on Chloe's face, which vanished in an instant. It broke her heart to see her friend in such a state of confusion, unable to find any answers. Hence, she tried to change the topic. "Speak the truth, Chloe. Did you meet your prince charming? What's he like?"
  • "Stop teasing me! Did you even see the number of boys fawning over you every live session?" Chloe retorted. Thankfully, Shirley's attempt to divert her attention was successful. The two best friends started to catch up on their latest ventures.
  • "Yesterday, a nerd gave me twenty likes. Can you believe it?! Since you've so much time on your hands, why don't you try doing a live broadcast?" Shirley suggested.
  • Chloe mocked, "Forget it. I'm not as talented as you!"
  • Shirley jumped off the sofa and said, "Come, let me teach you."
  • They spent the remainder of their day laughing and having a good time.
  • Around 10 p.m. at Riverside District, Bernard handed the papers to Jett and said, "Mr. Grayson, please have a look at the report."
  • Jett clutched the report and looked up at the sky. The stars were sparkling, peeking out from the clouds as they hang in the night. Suddenly, a blazing shooting star appeared, drawing a divine glow to the night sky.
  • He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. With great anticipation and anxiety, he made a wish.
  • When I first saw Mylah, I suspected that she was my child. My instinct has always been accurate, but it wouldn't be fair to claim that she's my daughter just because of a hunch. The most accurate way to test kinship is through a DNA match. Hence, this DNA report holds the answer as to whether we are father and daughter.
  • He lowered his head and read the report carefully.
