Chapter 13 I Can Make You Stand Again
- You think I don't know? I've been suffering too! But what can I possibly do? I can only hate myself for being useless! Why did God do this to me? This is so unfair!
- At times, he would ponder, if only fate could grant him a chance to rise again, everything would change.
- However, this was merely a pipe dream.
- Dominic simply looked at him with a cool gaze. It was clear that his actions were intentional.
- He wanted to reignite Gregory's hope for life.
- Only then would he reclaim his role as the pillar of this family after he helped him get back on his feet in the future.
- Dominic was ready to throw some harsher words to provoke Gregory when the door to the room swung open.
- Yvonne barged in.
- “Dad!”
- Her voice filled with pity echoed.
- She had been eavesdropping on the conversation between Dominic and him outside the door.
- Seeing Gregory so filled with self-reproach and guilt at that moment, Yvonne felt a profound pang of heartache.
- “Yvonne... I'm sorry. It's my fault. I've failed to protect you and your mother. I've let you both suffer all these years!”
- With a face full of self-reproach, Gregory continued pounding his legs, letting out the years of pent-up frustration.
- “Dad... don't be like this. Mom and I have never blamed you.”
- Yvonne had truly never blamed him because he was her father.
- She still remembered how much her father adored her when she was a child. She recalled a time when she had a high fever in the middle of the night and her father had carried her on his back, running several kilometers to the hospital.
- She remembered all of these vividly.
- She understood her father's inner torment better than anyone else. After all, who would willingly choose to spend their days confined to a wheelchair?
- For her father's sake, she was willing to endure any hardship.
- Dominic looked at Yvonne speechlessly.
- Why did she have to barge in here and ruin my plan?
- Isn't she just stirring up trouble for no reason?
- No, I can't let ruin everything like this.
- “True, they never blamed you. But can your conscience really be at ease? You're the only man in the house, yet you let two women struggle for the household's livelihood and endure hardships outside. You're clearly aware of all this. Don't you feel heartbroken?”
- What Dominic said made Gregory feel even more guilty.
- Tears streamed down his face as he clutched at his hair.
- “Dominic, what are you doing? Stop talking. I won't allow you to speak about my dad like that!”
- Yvonne stood before Gregory, her eyes burning with anger.
- He didn't just fail to make Dad feel better but also said things that hurt him.
- He's terrible!
- Dominic disregarded Yvonne and persisted with his mental assault.
- “Mrs. Litchfield is a beautiful woman, but look at her. You haven't even noticed her graying hair. She's been tirelessly working herself to the bone every day, all for the sake of making a living. And after all that, she comes home to look after good-for-nothing like you. In order to support the family, she refrains from purchasing any cosmetics, aside from the basic necessities. She doesn't even own a single piece of decent jewelry. Then there's Yvonne. She could have been living a happy and peaceful life, but look at her now. For you, she's out there, caught up in all sorts of dangers. As the head of the family, you allowed two women to suffer and face life's hardships, while others pointed fingers and talked behind their backs. Haven't you ever thought of changing all this?”
- “Of course, I've thought about it. But look at me now. What can I do to make a change?” Gregory roared.
- “Look at you? So you can't walk, but your hands are still functioning, and you can talk. You haven't turned into a fool, so why can't you make a change? Life is all about being pushed to your limits. If you don't even dare to try, what right do you have to speak such words?” In the end, Dominic played his trump card. “Mr. Litchfield, Mrs. Litchfield has been married to you for so many years. Surely, you're not going to let her lose forever, are you?”
- An explosion went off in Gregory's mind, and his entire body froze.
- He's right.
- Janet has been married to me for so many years, yet I have never provided her with a good life.
- Back then, she chose to follow me without a second thought. Am I really going to let her lose for the rest of her life?
- “No, I don't want her to lose for the rest of her life. I want her to live a stable and happy life.” As he spoke, his expression fell once again. With force, he pounded his legs. “Why, God, why do this to me? If only I could stand, I could change everything!”
- Yvonne was already crying so hard she couldn't even make a sound.
- Suddenly, an idea struck her, and she swiftly turned her gaze toward Dominic.
- “What's so difficult about this? I might be able to get you on your feet if you want,” Dominic piped up right then.
- “I—What? What did you say?” Gregory was taken aback.
- What did I just hear? Did he say he could help me stand up again?
- “Young man, there's no need to console me. Over the years, I've sought help from almost every renowned doctor in Druobridge, even throughout the entire Terrandya, but none of them could help.”
- Why would I be so depressed if I could stand again?
- Besides, he looks too young, not at all like a capable medical expert. What can he possibly do to make me stand again?
- “Is there a way or not, we'll see if I give it a shot.” Dominic flashed a smile. “But only if you cooperate wholeheartedly. So, would you like to give it a shot?”
- “Yes, of course!” Gregory nodded with a face full of excitement. “As long as you can help me stand up, I'll do anything you ask.”
- As long as he was no longer a burden, he could completely transform everything. He could once again be the pillar that held up their home.
- This was his deepest desire.
- “I don't need you to do anything. Just remember what you've just said. If I can make you stand again, I hope you can truly shoulder the responsibilities of this family once again and prevent the mother and daughter from suffering any further,” Dominic said nonchalantly.
- He pulled out that gold needle and began to sterilize it.
- “I don't need you to tell me to do that,” Gregory said, his face serious.
- “Yvonne, you should wait outside,” Dominic said, turning to Yvonne.
- If it were a regular acupuncture session, it wouldn't be a problem for her to observe from the sidelines.
- However, Dominic had to be fully focused on what was to come. The slightest distraction was not permissible. Yvonne's presence here could potentially divert his attention.
- “I'm counting on you.”
- Yvonne took a deep breath and stepped out with a heart full of apprehension.
- Once Yvonne had left, Dominic softly said, “Well then, let's get started.”
- Gregory pulled up his pants to his knees. He looked at Dominic, his eyes filled with anticipation.
- Dominic's face turned serious as he held the gold needle and inhaled deeply.
- Suddenly, the gold needle in his hand began to tremble violently, creating a ceaseless buzzing sound.
- Dominic swiftly inserted the gold needle into a specific acupoint in Gregory's knee.
