Chapter 5 What Did You Do to Me

  • There was no time to waste. With a flick of his wrist, several silver needles appeared in Vance's palm.
  • With several complicated yet theatrical motions, he inserted the needles into several points on the woman's body and diverted the frigid force into the jade pendant she wore around her neck.
  • The woman slowly opened her eyes. Her head was throbbing. "What… happened?"
  • "The frigid force within your body had erupted, and that had caused you to lose consciousness. I've cured you of your symptoms though."
  • The woman instantly became wary of Vance. "Frigid force? What the heck is that? What… What did you do to me?"
  • "If my guess is right, there'll be a two or three-day period every month where you feel like your internal organs have turned into ice. In serious cases, the pain might cause you to pass out."
  • The woman seemed visibly shocked. Vance had indeed guessed correctly.
  • The symptoms had tormented her for more than twenty years. No doctor in the world could figure out what was wrong with her.
  • Could the young man really have cured her of the icy sensation?
  • She closed her eyes and tried to sense what was going on within her. The icy sensation could no longer be felt.
  • Is he really… a miracle doctor?
  • Soon, the woman noticed that Vance looked too young and too plain to be a doctor, let alone a miracle doctor. She began to grow suspicious of him.
  • "How can you possibly cure me in the short period I was unconscious?"
  • "There's no ailment in this world that I can't heal."
  • Bullsh*t!
  • The woman scoffed. "My father is also suffering from a strange disease, and no doctor has been able to relieve his symptoms. I'll believe you if you can cure my father."
  • "I don't really care if you believe me. In any case, I've cured you, and you'll have to pay for it," Vance said and snatched the jade pendant from the woman's neck. "That'll do."
  • The frigid force contained in the jade pendant would be very useful.
  • "Ow! Watch it!" The woman gasped in pain. Why can't you be gentler to a woman?
  • "Hey, I'm Helen Lewis, and I'm the director of Troy Global. If you can cure my father, I'll give you anything you want."
  • Vance ignored her.
  • Helen continued, "My father is the mayor of Chevron. If you can cure him of his disease, I can assure you that your future will be bright."
  • Vance stopped walking away. "He's the mayor? It should be easy for him to find something within Chevron, right?"
  • "Of course. He'll find it for you even if it means turning the entire city upside down," Helen replied.
  • Vance thought for a while before saying, "Let's keep in touch then."
  • "Alright. What's your Messenger account?"
  • Vance took out his old-fashioned mobile phone. "What's a Messenger?"
  • "..." Helen was speechless.
  • After exchanging phone numbers, Vance continued his way to the Zenith Mansion.
  • Even from afar, the mansion looked palatial.
  • Without his electronic key, Vance could only kick the door open.
  • After stepping into the mansion, Vance was stunned by the cavernous interior and extravagant furnishings.
  • "D*mn. This place is bigger than my VIP cell! Donny certainly knows how to enjoy life!"
  • He spent the entire night extracting the frigid force from the jade pendant and condensing it into a little pill. At the end of it, he was thoroughly exhausted, but just when he was about to go to bed, he received a phone call from Helen.
  • "Vance, I've contacted my father and uncle. Please help them with their illnesses."
  • "I only agreed to treat your father because he can find the thing I want. Sorry to hear about your uncle though."
  • "My uncle is Mr. Duchenne, head of the Urban Planning Department of Chevron. He can help you too."
  • Vance thought for a while and replied, "Sure. It won't be too much trouble anyway."
  • "Where are you? I'll come and pick you up."
  • "Zenith Mansion."
  • "I don't have time for jokes. Where the heck are you?"
  • "I said I'm at Zenith Mansion."
  • "Ha ha. Very funny," Helen said. He doesn't even have a smartphone, and yet he says he lives in Zenith Mansion! I can't afford the place even though I'm the director of Troy Global and the mayor's daughter!
  • "Never mind. I'll go and meet you. Where are we meeting?" Vance said.
  • "VIP Room 1 of Vista Hot Springs Resort."
  • "Mm." After ending the call, Vance left the mansion.
  • He jogged his way down the hill. As he neared the location of the car accident yesterday, he heard a female voice call him.
  • "It's you, Vance! Why are you here?"
  • Vance stopped in his tracks. He was surprised to see Hazel there. She was currently directing several workers to repair the damaged curb.
  • "Mm. I live on top," Vance said.
  • On top? Of the hill?
  • Hazel threw a glance at Zenith Mansion. "So you're working as a security guard here. Not bad."
  • Security guard? Vance could not be bothered to explain it to her. "Why are you here?"
  • "My company is the maintenance contractor of the Nimbus Hills residential area. Some idiot damaged the curb yesterday, and I'm here with my workers to fix it."
  • "That idiot is Helen Lewis of Troy Global."
  • "How do you know?" Hazel was surprised.
  • "She nearly ran me over yesterday, and I stopped the car with a punch. Right, she's buying me lunch at the Vista Hot Springs Resort as a sign of apology."
  • Hazel rolled her eyes. "Of course. And everyone clapped."
  • Vance was not going to argue with her. "If there's nothing else, I'll be leaving."
  • "Wait. I'm going to the Vista Hot Springs Resort too. Let's go together," Hazel said.
  • Vance nodded. "Sure."
  • Soon, the couple arrived at the Vista Hot Springs Resort.
  • "Thanks," Vance said curtly and prepared to head toward VIP Room 1.
  • Hazel hastily stopped him. "Hey, hey! Where are you going?"
  • "VIP Room 1. I have a lunch appointment there."
  • "Will it kill you if you stop lying? VIP Room 1 is exclusively reserved for the mayor and his family! Never mind. Come with me to VIP Room 2. Ferdinand is going to pester me again about the marriage. You have to come with me."
  • "I think Ferdinand is a nice guy," Vance said.
  • "Why don't you marry him then?" Hazel retorted.
  • "You're funny, Hazel Sullivan."
  • VIP Room 2 was packed with the core members of the Sullivan family.
  • Ferdinand was sitting in the host's seat, while Arnold and Daryl sat next to him, showering him with flattery.
  • Ferdinand's eyes lit up when he saw Hazel enter the room. However, his face immediately sank when he saw Vance enter after her.
  • Daryl noticed the change in Ferdinand's expression. He shouted, "Hazel? Why would you bring him here? Ferdie is going to introduce us to Mr. Duchenne of the Urban Planning Department. You mustn't let an ex-con sit together with a highly-ranked official!"
  • Hazel did not know what to do.
  • Ferdinand helped Hazel resolve the dilemma. "But he's already here, Mr. Sullivan. Let's not trouble Hazel any further. I bet she's already quite frustrated with someone."
  • "You're too kind, Ferdie," Daryl said.
  • Hazel and Vance sat down.
  • "You mentioned you've invited Mr. Duchenne of the Urban Planning Department?" Vance asked.
  • Hazel nodded and said, "Mm. We need Mr. Duchenne's help with some problems we're facing with the Golden Sands Bay project."
  • "I'm afraid he won't be free," Vance said.
  • "Why?"
  • "Because he's supposed to have lunch with me," Vance replied.
