Chapter 12 Get Divorced Tomorrow

  • Daryl brought Vance back to the Sullivan family residence.
  • All the family members were gathered in the living room. They seemed to be in low spirits, but when Vance stepped inside, they looked as though they wanted to eat him alive.
  • What's with the long faces? Did someone die? Vance thought.
  • Arnold was sitting in the middle of the crowd. "Vance, I want you and Hazel to go to the city courthouse first thing tomorrow morning and get your divorce papers signed. Also, you'll have to announce publicly that you will cut all ties with the Sullivan family. You can stay here for tonight. Daryl, get some men to keep a close eye on him so he can't escape," he said grimly.
  • "Yes, Father," Daryl answered.
  • Is that how you should treat the person who saved your family? Vance was confused.
  • "Grandfather, I can't divorce Vance now. He offended Victor Arbry because he protected my dignity. It'll be heartless of us to abandon him when he needs our help. I'm not going to treat him like that," Hazel spoke out, which made Vance happy to know that she was still on his side.
  • "Shut up!" Arnold was furious. "Vance didn't have to hit Victor to save you, did he? Now, no one is on our side anymore. If I let this continue, we'll go bankrupt within three days. I think Vance is here to destroy us!"
  • Hazel remained defiant. "I can't divorce him now, not unless the Sullivan family is willing to help him with this. Otherwise, I'll elope with Vance and deal with Victor ourselves."
  • "You… You…" Arnold was about to pop a vein.
  • I'm glad I saved her *ss, Vance thought while stealing a glance at Hazel.
  • "Don't get me wrong. I'm doing this just because I don't want to owe you a debt of gratitude," Hazel whispered to Vance.
  • "Likewise," Vance replied.
  • Arnold was in despair.
  • Master Crane was right. If his disciple did not marry Hazel and fulfill the contract, the Sullivan family would be on an irredeemable path to ruin.
  • I'm very sure that Master Crane's disciple is the Avatar of War's mentor. If the Avatar of War is on his way here to Chevron, it means that Master Crane's disciple is here too. Why isn't he coming here to fulfill the marriage contract? He thought.
  • He's our only hope now…
  • While Hazel and Arnold were caught in the standstill, a BMW 5 Series stopped at the front gate of the Sullivan family residence. Victor stepped out of the car and ran into the house.
  • The Sullivan family members sank further into despair.
  • It's not enough that Troy Global would attack us financially. Does Victor plan to exact his revenge upon us personally too?
  • Arnold tried to maintain his composure. He said, "Greetings, Mr. Arbry. We were just talking about you. I'm sure there must be some sort of misunderstanding…"
  • To Arnold's surprise, Victor ignored him, went straight in front of Vance and Hazel, and fell to his knees.
  • "Mr. Krauss, Ms. Sullivan, I am here to apologize to you. I shouldn't have done what I did, it was a lapse in my judgment, and I regret it deeply. I hope you will have the magnanimity to forgive me. Oh, right, this is a two-hundred-million-dollar purchase order from Troy Global. I hope you will accept this token of my sincerity, Ms. Sullivan."
  • "So that's it? If apologies are worth anything, why would we need the law?" Vance said coldly.
  • "Please, Mr. Krauss. Give me a chance to redeem myself. I'll do anything for your forgiveness," Victor begged.
  • "Slap yourself one hundred times," Vance said.
  • "Yes, yes. I will slap myself. As long as that makes you happy," Victor replied. Without hesitation, he began to slap himself hard on alternate cheeks.
  • If he did not punish himself like that, his life would be forfeit in Mayor Hunter Lewis and Ms. Lewis's hands.
  • At the same time, Arnold's phone began to ring. He received several calls in a row from other corporations who had cut their business ties with him earlier, and all of them expressed that they would resume cooperation.
  • The Sullivan family members looked at each other, utterly confused.
  • Why is Victor so afraid of Vance? Isn't Vance an ex-con? What dirt does he have on Victor?
  • After about thirty slaps, Victor was already bleeding from the corners of his mouth.
  • Arnold was horrified. "Please stop, Mr. Arbry, you don't have to do this. Please…"
  • However, Victor ignored him and continued slapping himself.
  • Arnold had to plead with Vance to let Victor go.
  • Now that Arnold had lowered himself, Vance thought it was a good time to stop. "Get lost."
  • "Thank you. Thank you!"
  • Victor ran out of the house as though he had received a royal pardon.
  • The Sullivan family members watched him leave. No one said a word.
  • Hazel was the first to come to her senses. "Vance Krauss, you have a lot of explaining to do. What the heck just happened?" she asked.
  • "I've already told you that you have nothing to worry about, but you won't listen. See? Victor won't be able to do anything to you," Vance said.
  • "Why is he so afraid of you?" Hazel asked again.
  • "I told you I know his boss, Helen Lewis," Vance answered.
  • Hazel was shocked. "You really know Ms. Lewis? Does that mean you weren't lying? So… was it true that Ms. Lewis invited you and Mr. Duchenne for lunch, and Mr. Duchenne only came to our private room because you asked him to?"
  • "You don't say?" Vance said.
  • The candid conversation caused the Sullivan family members to be more shocked than ever.
  • Is he really just an ex-con? Why would he be acquainted with Ms. Lewis and Mr. Duchenne?
  • The Sullivan family members began to suspect Vance was not who he claimed to be.
  • However, Daryl remained doubtful. "No, that's impossible. There must be some kind of misunderstanding…"
  • At that moment, Hazel's phone began to ring. It was a call from Shelley Davidson, her best friend.
  • "Hazel? Did Victor go to your house and apologize?" Shelley asked.
  • Hazel was surprised. "How do you know, Shelley?"
  • "Of course I know," Shelley replied, "Actually, Ferdinand hurried back to Troy Global after receiving news that Victor was beaten up. He was furious when he got to know Victor tried to drug you, and he immediately went to talk to Ms. Lewis. Of course, Ms. Lewis didn't want to offend Ferdinand, so she made Victor come and apologize to you."
  • Shelley did not want Hazel to know the extent of Vance's influence. If Hazel knew about it, she would not divorce Vance anymore, and Shelley would lose the chance of marrying him.
  • That was why Shelley had conspired with Ferdinand so that Ferdinand took the credit.
  • It was not the first time Ferdinand stole Vance's credit anyway.
  • Hazel was dumbfounded to find out about the ridiculous twist in the story. "Are you sure?"
  • "Of course," Shelley said.
  • "But Mr. Arbry looked like he was deathly afraid of Vance…"
  • "Pfft! Ms. Lewis only told Mr. Arbry that he had offended 'Mr. Krauss.' I guess Mr. Arbry thought the 'Mr. Krauss' was Vance and not Ferdinand! Why, don't tell me you'd actually believe Mr. Arbry is afraid of Vance?"
  • Hazel's face sank when she heard that.
  • So Vance is trying to steal Ferdinand's credit again! He never changes!
  • She happened to hate dishonest people the most.
  • Her feelings for Vance turned to utter disgust.
  • After the call ended, she told everyone what Shelley told her over the call.
  • The Sullivan family members instantly chattered with each other.
  • "I knew it! A mere ex-con couldn't have been so influential!"
  • "Doesn't he know any shame? How dare he steal Mr. Krauss's credit!"
  • "That ex-con will only bring trouble to our family, while Mr. Krauss has helped us time and time again. It's obvious who Hazel's husband should be."
  • "Hazel should divorce that bum and throw his *ss out of our household."
