Chapter 8 There Is a Child at Home

  • Dexter had waited for Eloise for six years. How could I let go of her so easily? How could I not know Tony's character?
  • "Mr. Barker, she is different from the other women. I believe she had her own reasons for leaving me. I have never loved someone so much in my life, so please don't speak ill of her," Dexter insisted firmly.
  • An emotion flashed across Jonathan's dark eyes. After hearing Dexter's pleading, Jonathan said in a deep voice, "I will take care of Tony, but it is not for you. I have a score to settle with him as well. As for your dad, you will need to explain to him on your own."
  • "Thank you, Mr. Barker." Dexter was very happy. He used to hold a grudge against his father for becoming sworn brothers with Jonathan, who was around the same age as he was, and it bothered him for many years. In addition, Dexter hated Chloe, which made him even more annoyed with Jonathan. Yet today, Jonathan was actually willing to help him by covering Eloise's matter for him.
  • I'm touched. From now on, I will treat Jonathan as my elder. Anyone who dares badmouth him will have to suffer my wrath.
  • Right then, someone's phone started ringing. Jonathan took a look at the caller and left the room.
  • "Jonathan, what happened to Dexter?" It was Dexter's father.
  • Jonathan replied, "It's just a small matter. There's nothing to worry about."
  • "That's good." Dexter's father was quite unhappy. "Is that son of mine out of his mind? A decent company is waiting for him to run, yet he heads to cause a commotion at Tony's company."
  • Jonathan gave the other a perfunctory answer. "He is still young, so don't be too bothered by this."
  • After hanging up, he left the hospital.
  • Zachary reported to Jonathan like usual, "Mr. Barker, Tony fled Cythais and is now in hiding."
  • In the backseat of the Bentley, Jonathan flipped open the document in his hands.
  • Zachary hurriedly added, "Don't worry, sir. He won't be returning any time soon, nor will he dare to sue Mr. Cole."
  • Jonathan merely grunted in response. The cancellation of his engagement left a huge impact on his company, and everyone was watching his every move. If he pushed Tony too far, it would only raise more suspicions.
  • Even though Tony managed to escape, his subordinate, Eloise, was still there, and Jonathan was more than happy to take revenge on Tony's accomplice.
  • "Monitor everything that goes on at the warehouse. Make sure they don't go overboard," Jonathan said.
  • Zachary nodded and asked where Jonathan would like to go.
  • "Send me back home," Jonathan said emotionlessly.
  • The car slowly approached the Clover Hut, and the butler, who spotted Jonathan first, hurriedly ran down the stairs. "Madam, Mr. Jonathan is back."
  • When Old Mrs. Barker, who was playing building blocks with Jace, heard Jonathan's name being mentioned, her smile instantly vanished. She complained, "Why is he back? Tell him to leave. Just the sight of him makes me upset."
  • "Madam, please cheer up. He is still your child." The butler felt sorry for Jonathan.
  • Jace nodded and chimed in, "Yes, Madam Aggie. Your son might be useless, but you shouldn't get angry. He is a man, after all, so it's normal for him to be unable to give birth."
  • Aggie fondly looked at the child's cute face, seeming to like him very much. A smile replaced her previously dull expression. "You're right. Go and play inside the room. I'll be back soon."
  • After that, she turned and headed down the stairs. Jonathan was sitting on the sofa in the living room and sipping his coffee. When Aggie saw him, she walked over, sternly asking, "You rascal, how dare you show your face here? Where is your wife? Where is my grandchild? Do you not understand what I told you?"
  • "Mom, please stop nagging at me to have children. If you like children that much, I can open a kindergarten for you. How about that?" Jonathan remained calm and continued to read his documents.
  • Seeing that Jonathan was not concerned at all, Aggie threw his documents onto the floor in a fit of anger. "What kindergarten? Mrs. Brown already has three grandchildren. Look at you. What is the point of earning so much money? Don't most capable men have wives and children?"
  • However, Jonathan was unbothered by that.
  • Aggie reprimanded him for almost half an hour, but Jonathan kept quiet and even managed to finish reading a thick stack of project plans. Just as she was about to continue, she heard a loud bang coming from upstairs. The sudden noise made her anxiously look upstairs and question the butler, "What is that sound from upstairs?"
  • "It's probably from a broken vase. I'll go and take a look immediately." The butler turned to leave.
  • Aggie remembered Jace was still upstairs and was afraid that he would get hurt, so she rushed upstairs at a pace that was even faster than the butler's.
  • Raising an eyebrow at the sight, Jonathan asked, "Did Miss Stephanie bring her child over?"
  • The servant replied, "No, she did not. Madam's driver accidentally knocked over a child with the car two days ago. Since the child was injured and his parents were on a business trip, Madam brought the child home and let him stay here temporarily."
  • Based on his mother's character, she wouldn't have been able to stay put at home and would have destroyed Chloe after the cancellation of their engagement. Now that he knew there was a child here, he finally understood her actions.
  • That was a good thing because it could, at least, take away some attention from him.
  • After working at Deligrace Enterprise for two days, Eloise realized that she had been lied to. But just as she was preparing to speak to the supervisor about it, she saw Chloe suddenly appear and casually close the warehouse door.
  • Eloise, who was slightly tired, became alert in an instant. "What are you doing here?"
  • "Shouldn't I be asking you that instead? Did you consider the proposal I suggested? For you to leave Cythais?" Chloe asked.
  • Furrowing her brows, Eloise retorted, "Why should I listen to you?"
  • "I have your son, so you must listen to me," Chloe threatened.
  • After snorting, Eloise mocked Chloe, "Jacey has escaped, so your threats will not work on me."
  • Chloe did not expect Eloise to be so shameless and was slightly annoyed. "Was it not enough for you to destroy my marriage? What more do you want from me?"
  • "You should know fairly well who had destroyed who!" Eloise fearlessly looked at Chloe's hate-filled face and curled her lips into a smirk. "Cythais is not your territory, so whether or not I leave is none of your business!"
  • "Very well then, Eloise. Do you think that you are all that? You would have died if my mom hadn't picked you up from the streets. How dare you have complaints about us? Who gives a d*mn about you?" Chloe was furious with her.
  • Eloise sneered in response. Am I obliged to sacrifice everything, including my innocence and future, just because I was adopted?
  • "I had cut my ties with you six years ago. So, you better don't come and find trouble with me when I haven't done anything to you. I still remember how you hurt Jace the other day, so don't blame me for wanting to get revenge."
  • "Haha, the ungrateful brat is back for revenge. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do." Having said that, Chloe went further inside the warehouse and picked up the data report Eloise spent the entire night collating.
  • Eloise rushed forward and demanded, "Give it back to me!"
  • "Do you want this?" A cunning jeer appeared on Chloe's face as she tore up the data report in front of Eloise's face.
  • Looking at the torn report, Eloise felt the temperature around her turning ice-cold. "You have messed with the wrong person!"
