Chapter 4 Still Doesn't Have a Child

  • For six years, Dexter had been waiting for Eloise's return. He wanted to tell her he was rich now, but now he was told she had a son.
  • "That can't be true. Elly's not like that." Dexter was in disbelief, and his dark eyes burned with rage. "You're lying!"
  • Chloe silently laughed and ridiculed him. "Elly is like that. It's just that you have no idea about it. She refused to listen to me when I told her not to become someone's mistress and then regretted it. As a result, she came and ruined my engagement party. I have already captured her child and can hand him over to you anytime."
  • She was just stressing over how to get rid of the child.
  • Dexter's father was a brilliant man, and the Coles had been in business for three generations, successfully gaining a fortune out of it. Afraid Dexter would get hated due to their family's wealth, he made Dexter hide his identity and pretend to be poor.
  • He waited six years for his lover for six years but was told she had a son after she returned…Dexter must be so furious that he would want to kill her child. By then, even if the Barker family finds out about this matter, it will have nothing to do with me!
  • Having come up with a plan, Chloe was prepared to bring Jace out. However, she saw black smoke emerging from the second floor and anxiously asked, "What's happening upstairs?"
  • The butler hurriedly ran down the stairs. "Oh, no. Miss Thompson, the storeroom is on fire!"
  • "What?"
  • Chloe's expression changed completely, and she bolted up the stairs. A dense layer of black smoke could be seen emerging from the storeroom. Everything inside was on fire and spreading quickly outward.
  • The child is still locked inside! If he is burned alive, Jonathan would definitely kill me when he finds out!
  • "Put out the fire! Quickly!"
  • Back inside, the servants frantically searched for fire extinguishers before rushing to the storeroom with them. The situation was getting out of hand.
  • When they finally extinguished the fire and entered the room, they found no one inside except an opened window unscrewed from the inside.
  • "Where is he?" Chloe shouted in rage.
  • At that moment, someone stumbled up the stairs and shouted in horror, "Miss Thompson, something bad happened!"
  • "What else happened?" Chloe furiously questioned.
  • The bodyguard pointed in the direction of the backyard. "Someone smashed the expensive car you bought last month!"
  • Not only that, but the rest of the cars parked in the backyard were smashed as well. Chloe was livid when she saw the footage from the surveillance cameras.
  • In the footage, Jace found some bricks in the garden after crawling out from the window and then started smashing her cars. Once done, he even dusted his hands in satisfaction.
  • That rascal!
  • Chloe could not bear to watch on anymore. After getting rid of Dexter, she personally brought others to search for the child.
  • As they were in a residential area with villas for the rich, even though the area was large and sparsely populated, the security here was tight, so Jace could not have gone far.
  • Once I catch that little troublemaker, I will make him pay for setting the storeroom on fire and smashing my cars!
  • A malicious thought rose in Chloe. She dispatched her entire crew of bodyguards, servants, and even the residential area's security guards to look for Jace.
  • Jace, who had escaped the Thompson Residence, hid in a small flowerbed. He dared not come out when he saw patrol cars passing by and waited until they were all gone before coming out. Then, he dashed away but did not notice the car behind him. When he finally did, he was already sent flying through the air.
  • The car lurched to a sudden stop.
  • "What's wrong?" A woman's stern voice echoed in the car.
  • The driver's face turned pale, and he quickly pulled the handbrake before saying in a trembling voice, "I'm sorry, Madam. I accidentally hit someone. Let me go take a look."
  • Having said that, he bolted out of the car and saw a child cradling his arm, lying on the ground. The child had a pitiful look on his face, and the driver immediately knelt down. "Kid, are you hurt?"
  • "Sir, don't you watch the road when you drive? You almost killed me." Jace sat up and looked at the driver with teary eyes.
  • The driver was extremely guilty. When he saw that Old Mrs. Barker, Aggie Wright, had also gotten out of the car, he said, "Madam, this child is injured. Can I bring him into the car before I send you to the Thompson Residence?"
  • "Who cares about going there when this child is hurt? As for Chloe, she's never allowed to enter my house ever again!" Aggie brought her gaze down to Jace's face and was surprised to see the child resemble Jonathan when he was younger!
  • Aggie thought she was seeing things because of her immense desire to have a grandson and asked, "Kid, what are you doing here alone? Where is your father?"
  • Jace clutched his elbow. Then, he spotted a patrol car heading his way and was afraid they might be men sent by Chloe, so he cried, "Ma'am, my arm hurts."
  • Immediately, Aggie brought him into the car, successfully avoiding the patrol car just in time.
  • At the hospital, Aggie examined the child lying on the bed with a peculiar expression. No matter how she looked, she could see a huge resemblance between the child and Jonathan.
  • When the doctor left, Aggie could not help but ask, "Where do you stay? Do you remember your parents' contact numbers?"
  • Jace recalled the scene where Eloise was captured by those evil men and shook his head. "No, I don't remember my mommy's number."
  • "How about your father's?" Aggie asked.
  • He wiped the tears from the corner of his eyes and cried, "Daddy passed away a long time ago. His death was extremely tragic. His body was burned, and now, it's just my mommy and me."
  • "Oh, my darling, please don't cry. Your tears break my heart." Aggie's heart ached as she watched his tears fall. She gently embraced the small child in her arms.
  • The sad and pitiful Jace wiped his tears and spoke aggrievedly. "My mommy is still on a business trip, and there is no one to take care of me, but I can take care of myself. Don't worry, Ma'am, you may leave."
  • Aggie felt like fate had brought her to meet Jace. Since her driver had injured the kid, it was impossible for her to leave him alone, especially after knowing how miserable his life was.
  • "If you don't mind, you can stay at my house for a few days. Then, I'll send you home once your mommy returns. How about that?" Aggie asked.
  • Jace's heart leaped in joy. "Really?"
  • The more Aggie looked at Jace, the more she liked him. She thought he was adorable and possibly even cuter than Jonathan when he was a kid. Without another word, she brought Jace home.
  • "Madam, Mr. Jonathan has returned." Not long after Aggie arrived home, the butler came to inform her.
  • Aggie, who was busy coaxing Jace, grew upset. "How dare he show his face here after he got engaged to someone with such a shady background?"
  • The butler broke out in a cold sweat. "Isn't that because you have been pressurizing him too much lately?"
  • "He is almost in his thirties, yet he still doesn't have a son. What else do I need him for? Ask him to leave!" Aggie's voice was stern, and she turned to see Jace's shocked face staring back at her. She quickly broke into a smile and gently said, "Jacey, don't be afraid. I am not scolding you."
  • Jace gulped, and his small frame was slightly shaking. Can't her son have a child? That's so scary!
  • Aggie saw how scared the little boy looked and bent down to carry him upstairs. Before she left, she ordered the butler, "Tell Jonathan that if he doesn't get married and bear me a grandson, he can forget about ever setting his foot into the house again!"
