Chapter 6 The Child Is Not His

  • Right then, there was faint perspiration on Eloise's pale forehead. Her frail body was burning up as if she was in an oven. She bit her lips and repeated, "Don't touch me!"
  • Immediately after saying that, she fainted.
  • When she woke up, she was already at the hospital, and the man sitting by her bedside was her ex-boyfriend, Dexter.
  • He sat on the chair with a grimace on his face and unspeakable sorrow in his eyes.
  • "You're awake," he said when he saw her open her eyes.
  • Eloise supported herself and sat up. Her complexion had returned to normal, and she leaned against the bed frame before glancing at the clothes that she was wearing. Luckily, they were still intact.
  • Dexter watched her slight movements and said solemnly, "I went to your home."
  • "We've broken up." Eloise did not wait for Dexter to finish before lifting her head to see his shocked expression and said, "Let's never meet again in the future."
  • He mocked, "Have you taken me as a fool for all these years?"
  • "I did not." She shook her head.
  • Shooting up in fury, he demanded, "Why else would you run away and not return for six years? What crimes have I committed that made you want to break up with me? Have you ever loved me?"
  • Facing her enraged ex-boyfriend, Eloise was exceptionally calm. She grasped the blanket and stayed silent for a while before gently saying, "I did love you. However, time waits for no one, and things are different now. I think you know it too. I don't need you anymore, so let's break up."
  • "Is it because of him?" Dexter asked as he tried to suppress the jealousy he felt.
  • Eloise was confused. "Him?"
  • Dexter thought he understood Eloise's character and brought out a big briefcase without saying a word. Then, he opened it, revealing all the cash inside."
  • With a frown, Eloise asked, "What is the meaning of this?"
  • "Leave that man and return his child. Be with me instead," Dexter proposed.
  • Confused by his unreasonable words, Eloise wondered if she had made herself clear earlier. Did Dexter not understand what I said?
  • "Elly, Mr. Wyatt has a wife and a family. You don't have to commit the rest of your life to him. If you cannot bear to leave his child, I..." Dexter's voice trailed off. Without a doubt, he was unable to accept raising another man's child.
  • Conflicted emotions and pain surged in his heart. He gazed at the face that he had longed for many years and hesitated for a while before coming to a decision. "If you cannot bear to leave his child, I can help you raise him. However, you cannot abandon me again."
  • "Who told you that Jacey is Mr. Wyatt's son?" Eloise curiously asked.
  • "Is he not? Didn't you sleep with him..." Dexter's voice trailed off again.
  • Then, Eloise lifted the blanket and got out of bed. Without sparing a glance at the money in the briefcase, she closed it and said, "I will raise my child on my own. We're through, so don't bother looking for me ever again. Thank you for saving me last night."
  • Eloise turned to leave after she finished.
  • She was determined to end this relationship.
  • She didn't need anyone pitying her, and no one had the right to take Jace from her!
  • In hasty steps, Eloise walked away briskly and could not hear what Dexter had to say after that. The first thing she intended to do after she left the hospital was to head to the Thompson Residence and find Jace.
  • But Chloe was not at home, and Phoebe was nowhere in sight either. The servants were frantically trying to clean up the storeroom that Jace had burnt down. When Eloise arrived, no one bothered about her as they thought that she was just one of the neighbors who had come to watch the commotion.
  • After discovering Jace had escaped, Eloise let out a breath of relief but then became anxious shortly afterward. Jacey is still young, and it is his first visit to Cythais. Where could he have escaped to?
  • Eloise borrowed a passerby's phone and dialed Jace's number. A kind female voice sounded at the other end of the line, and Eloise could not help but glance at the number again. There was no mistake; it was Jace's number.
  • "Mommy?" A child's voice suddenly echoed from the phone.
  • Eloise's heart leaped with joy. "Jacey? Where are you?"
  • "I'm at a kind granny's house." Jace's voice sounded lively and happy.
  • Eloise asked, "Which granny? Tell me your exact location. I will go over to pick you up now."
  • "I'm at Windberry Heights. Mommy, don't worry. Madam Auggie is very kind and treats me nicely, but she's not at home right now. She would be very sad if I left now," Jace explained softly in a sweet voice.
  • After knowing that he was in good hands, Eloise let out a sigh of relief. "Alright then, you can stay there for a few days. I'll come and pick you up once I find a job."
  • "Okay!" Jace obediently nodded his head.
  • Eloise returned the phone to the passerby and left after thanking the latter. Her luggage and phone were still in the hotel. Luckily, Chloe's men left after she escaped, so she retrieved her luggage and checked out of the room.
  • "Did you hear the news? Mr. Barker was attacked last night."
  • "My goodness, who was it? How daring is the culprit to do such a thing."
  • "Mr. Barker brought away the surveillance footage, so I am unsure who it was. But I'm very sure that Mr. Barker was furious when he left. I guess that intruder is in grave trouble!"
  • Eloise's hands trembled while holding onto the cash she received after checking out of her hotel room.
  • The staff at the front desk smiled and said, "Miss, your money is about to drop."
  • "Oh, thank you," Eloise responded before dragging her luggage and quickly leaving.
  • She returned to Cythais for two reasons. The first one was to find out who that man was from six years ago. The second one was that she had applied for a manager position at Deligrace Enterprise and had to come here for an interview.
  • Due to that reason, she had rented a house near Deligrace Enterprise's office. That afternoon, she got changed and went for the interview. Everything went smoothly, but she did not notice that someone was staring at her.
  • In the president's office, Zachary, who had been holding back his laughter the whole morning, watched Jonathan nearly crumpling Eloise's resume into a ball and felt like he was about to suffocate from holding back his laughter.
  • That Eloise is such a ruthless woman. She attacked Mr. Barker and escaped, yet she still has the nerve to show up at our company for an interview! Is she trying to embarrass Mr. Barker even more?
  • "Mr. Barker, should I get rid of her?" Zachary asked.
  • The emotion in Jonathan's eyes was unclear. He threw the resume into the bin and spat, "No need."
  • "Then..." Zachary did not understand.
  • Jonathan replied, "Since she is already here, there is no reason to let her leave. But the manager position she applied for is not suitable for her. Tell the Human Resources Department to let her assign her to the warehouse and work from the bottom up. Then…"
  • A sinister chuckle escaped his lips.
  • Eloise, who was waiting for the result, was disappointed that she was offered a position in the warehouse instead.
  • The manager was afraid that she would leave, so he came over to comfort her, "Our company's top executives all started from the bottom. You have good attributes, so once you join our company, it will be a breeze for you to become a permanent employee, get a raise, and even get promoted. Additionally, our salary is especially high compared to the other companies. We are offered twice as much, so please stay. We need people like you!"
