Chapter 6
- Hector pushed the table backward as his chair slid close to the window. He spun his chair playfully until he was facing the window, he stared at the beautiful and busy street of Las Vegas. He noticed some beggars trying to earn a decent living without trying to steal.
- The sky looked a bit dark and cloudy like it would rain anytime soon. He turned back to his desk before looking at all the workload he had, he had worked hard for his company but things weren't going the way he wanted.
- He felt like he needed to pay for his sins, he was keeping a secret that he hadn't told anybody. Yes! His wife was someone he never expected that would die soon and that had put him down but something else was weighing him more.
- He knew he wasn't going to pay for his sins on earth but in the hereafter, he knew he was going to hell. He knew Jesus was forgiving but would he forgive him for such a crime he had committed? Getting up from his seat, Hector brought out his bopping phone.
- He noticed the number that was calling him and a smile plastered on his face. “Hello, Hector! It's been a while,” A soft feminine voice spoke through the other line.
- “Vivian, it's been a while! You just went into hiding, ” Hector let out, taking back his seat before swinging it again. Hector had known Vivian since they were children. Her parents weren't well off as his, she was somebody who worked hard to earn money to take care of herself.
- She had found out a few months ago that she was diagnosed with cancer. Hector had agreed to pay for her treatment for her to get better but she had rejected, when he kept interfering in her life she cut ties with him by leaving the city.
- “I didn't know why you left town just to avoid my little help, ” Hector said, he had missed his childhood friend as much as his daughters do.
- “Well, I needed to get better,” she said, making him blink his eyes in affirmation. “Are you better now?” he asked but all he could hear was a little sniffle like she was sobbing. Hector clenched his hands, he hated the fact that she was crying, Vivian sucked her breath in before replying.
- “I’m getting better, ” she murmured. “Tell me the truth Vivian, are you getting better?” he asked as he could hear some voices in the background. “Yes, Hector! Henderson is doing everything possible! He got me a nurse to watch over me, ” Vivian let out, making Hector nod.
- Henderson was Vivian’s ex-boyfriend but he still stuck around her like he was ever a good boyfriend. Hector was thankful for Vivian for sticking close to him when his wife had died but she had zoomed off making him depressed again. “How are the girls?” Vivian asked.
- “They missed you, ” he let out.
- “Do I need to be concerned about the girls?” Vivian asked. “No, I got them a new maid, ” he let out, making Vivian sigh from the other line. He knew Vivian was family, she had stood by him and advised him even when he suspected that Susan was cheating.
- She was a good friend.
- “I thought you had refused to hire a maid?” Vivian asked as a yawn escaped her lips from the other line. “My mom took everything upon herself and you know Scott, ” he let out as a small chuckle escaped Vivian‘s lips.
- “I already hired her, I’m giving her a chance and I hope she doesn't misuse her chances, ” he said, earning another chuckle from Vivian.
- “I hope you know that having someone to look after your daughters is a good idea. Perhaps give her a chance, there is no harm in trying, ” she let out, making Hector close his eyes. “Thank you, Vivian, ” Hector let out.
- “For what?” she asked with a chuckle.
- “For checking up on me, ” he said, biting his bottom lips. “You need to get some rest, you sound exhausted, ” he continued trying hard not to cut the conversation.
- “I know, ” Vivian said as there was silence between the both of them. “I miss her so much,” Vivian let out, referring to Susan. Susan was her friend, her best friend who had left her alone in this scary world alone.
- “I miss her too.” Hector let out.
- It had been two years since her death and the wound still felt fresh in all their heart. Thinking about his wife was enough to make him go insane, Hector's grip tightened against his phone as he turned to stare at the city through his window.
- His eyes had gone red and watery.
- “Have a great day, Hector! I need to rest, ” Vivian let out with a pitying sigh. “You too Vivian, ” he let out as the phone hung up with a beeping sound. He stared at his phone for a while. A happy memory of his wife forcing him to eat little from what she had baked triggered him to ruffle his hair.
- “Sir, the board members are waiting, ” the secretary mumbled, making him nod. Hector rubbed a tired hand around his face. “Hailey, ” he called back to his secretary.
- “Have the background check gotten ready?” he asked, making her shake her head. “It will be on your desk before the end of today, ” she let out, making him nod. He needed a background check on Teresa Conner. He needed to be sure that she was safe and couldn't hurt even a fly.
- It felt wrong but he had done exactly the same thing with all his maids. His last maid had a criminal record and he hadn't known because he trusted her, he growled in frustration as he took the file he needed for his meeting.
- He took a steady breath before walking out of his office.
