Chapter 5 Finished
- Yasmin was woken up by Jane the next morning. “D*mn it, Jane... Why have you woken me up so early?” she grumbled when she checked her phone, seeing that it was only seven in the morning.
- “Come on. Get up, Yas! Tell me, how did your blind date go last night? Did it work out?” Jane asked her excitedly.
- “Nope!” Yasmin pulled the covers over her head as she tried to go back to sleep.
- “Oh, yeah? How would you explain the fancy coat on the sofa, then?” Jane reached out and tickled Yasmin as she continued, “That’s a high-quality bespoke suit, Yas! It costs a freaking bomb!”
- “Coat?” Yasmin was still somewhat in a daze when she got up, but she quickly recalled what had happened the previous night. Oh, that’s right... Matthew handed me a coat, but I was so anxious about getting out of the car that I forgot to return it...
- “Is he tall and rich? Tell me, is he handsome?” Jane’s eyes lit up in excitement.
- Tall, rich, and handsome? Lionel was the first person who came to mind, but Yasmin quickly shook the thought off. So what if he is? He’s mean and weird! I don’t want to be with a guy like that!
- “Short, poor, and ugly is more like it!” Yasmin ranted to Jane when she suddenly recalled Fennick.
- Jane shook her head after hearing her description. “Honestly... You look pretty, and twenty-six isn’t considered old. I don’t understand why your mom is so desperate about finding you a man.”
- “It’s all because of Linda’s mom...” Yasmin mumbled while getting out of bed but stopped herself mid-sentence.
- “What about Linda’s mom?” Jane asked.
- “Nothing.” Yasmin refused to speak further as she headed straight toward the bathroom.
- Jane recalled Yasmin’s history with Linda when she noticed her odd reaction and decided to drop the conversation. Oh, right... Linda’s mom had a relationship with her father, and Linda stole Henry from her... Knowing Linda’s mom, she definitely bragged about it to everyone, so it’s no surprise that Yasmin’s mom desperately wants to find her a guy...
- Yasmin was preparing to leave for work after washing up and getting dressed. “Don’t you have work today?” she asked when she saw Jane still in her pajamas.
- “My mom and little brother are coming over today, so I took half the day off,” Jane responded with a smile.
- Yasmin nodded. “Send her my regards!” As she was putting on her shoes at the door, her gaze fell upon the coat on the sofa, and she went over to pick it up. I was so tense from fear last night that I didn’t pay any attention to it. Now that I’ve taken a closer look, it does look really expensive...
- “You haven’t told me who this belongs to!” Jane exclaimed.
- “Some random guy!” Yasmin placed the coat into a bag and left the house. I don’t know if I’ll ever see Matthew again, but I can’t just throw his coat away! I should just send it for cleaning and return it to him if I see him again.
- The company that Yasmin worked at was called Miller Corporation, and it was owned by the Miller family. Its primary focus used to be the real estate business, but houses had become increasingly difficult to sell in recent years. As a result, the company had also begun to engage in other fields, such as the medical supplies industry, cosmetics industry, and international trade.
- However, due to the lack of expertise in those other fields, the management had made several major mistakes in their business strategies which resulted in huge losses for the company in the past few years. Fortunately for Miller Corporation, the company had been operating in Greenlake City for a very long time and played a huge role in its tax revenue. Seeing as such, the local banks had been supporting it financially to keep it from going bankrupt.
- In spite of that, Miller Corporation had laid off a lot of employees at the end of last year and was said to have another retrenchment coming up in the next month.
- Yasmin had been working in the company for three years since she graduated from university, and it took her a great amount of effort just to adapt to its environment. In order to keep her job, she dedicated herself fully to her work and gave it her absolute best.
- She was especially busy that day due to the heavy workload, and that wasn’t the end of it. The company had hired a new manager in an attempt to turn the tide around, and it was his first day in office.
- Rumor had it that the manager’s last name was Holloway and that he came from a wealthy aristocratic family. He was also said to have graduated from a prestigious university, running a company of his own. However, for some inexplicable reason, he had decided to help those who were on the brink of bankruptcy.
- On top of that, he was very handsome and in his early thirties, which was the main reason that all the female employees had their makeup applied to perfection that day.
- Hoping to persuade him into accepting the offer, Miller Corporation was even willing to give up some of its shares to grant him the position of interim CEO. In other words, the company’s survival was now in his hands.
- About half an hour before the lunch break, Serena shouted after getting off the phone, “He’s on his way, guys! Mr. Holloway is coming!”
- Mr. Holloway? Yasmin felt her heart skip a beat when she heard Serena’s words. That was what Matthew called his boss last night! Oh, boy... I have a bad feeling about this...
- Her department manager’s anxious voice snapped her out of her thoughts. “Mr. Holloway is coming for an inspection! Look alive, people!”
- “Look at that b*stard Simon, acting like he’s hot shit just because he’s getting a promotion soon... Ugh, it pisses me off just looking at his face!” Serena uttered disdainfully. She was also Yasmin’s roommate back in university, and the two of them had joined Miller Corporation together.
- Yasmin chuckled upon hearing her words. In fact, Serena and Simon used to be a couple until he cheated on her, dumping her for another woman. Since then, Serena had hated him with a passion as she began to spread negative rumors about him all over the company.
- “I wonder who’s replacing Simon...”
- “I heard that the company’s bringing in someone with a very impressive background.”
- The Human Resource Department was never short on gossip, and Yasmin felt nervous when she overheard her colleagues talking about it.
- Calm down... You probably just didn’t get enough sleep last night, that’s all...
- “He’s here! Oh my god! He’s so handsome!”
- “Yeah! He’s a lot hotter than I’d expected!” Yasmin looked up curiously when she heard her colleagues shouting like crazy fangirls by the elevator. But she froze momentarily when she caught sight of the man who had stepped through the crowd.
- Holy shit... It really is Lionel, the guy whom I called a scumbag last night! I knew that the name Holloway sounded familiar! Okay, it’s official... I’m utterly screwed...
