Chapter 6
- “Don’t worry, the doctor said that the baby is very healthy.” Even though she wasn’t happy with the train of events that took place, seeing as how energetic the pale-faced woman became when He Nian and her child arrived, she couldn’t help but let out a genuine smile.
- “That is good... that is good,” Cheng Xue repeated with satisfaction. She patted the back of He Nian’s hand, then turned to Pei Shaoyu and said, “Shaoyu, you’re starting a family soon. From now on, you have to treat your wife properly, especially now that she’s pregnant. You have to take care of them, do you understand? Don’t busy yourself with work all day.”
- Pei Shaoyu didn’t say anything.
- Cheng Xue continued speaking, “You two should hurry up and get married before Nian’s baby bump becomes visible, otherwise, Nian might feel embarrassed. Our family might be thick-skinned enough to cope with the gossips, but we still have to help take care of this girl’s image.”
- His mother’s words warmed He Nian’s heart like the summer’s breeze, breaking apart her tough outer demeanor, and gradually, her gaze softened.
- The feeble Cheng Xue was a lot livelier than usual. She turned to her husband and confided, “Hurry up and reduce Nian’s burden before she gets exhausted. You don’t know how tough it is for women who are pregnant, especially if they need to plan for a wedding. She needs plenty of rest.”
- “Don’t worry, I know. Just take care of yourself and get ready to hold your grandchild,” Pei Lihua answered with a smile.
- With her mouth opened, He Nian was about to tell everyone that she didn’t want the child. Yet when Cheng Xue turned to look at her, the words choked in her throat, and she swallowed them back instinctively.
- Cheng Xue grinned at He Nian, “This body of mine is failing me. If it wasn’t for you, I don’t think I could last until the day Shaoyu starts a family. Now that you’re here with this wonderful news, I feel overjoyed.”
- When she said this, Cheng Xue flashed a sincere smile. It was the smile of an old woman, who was going to have her final wish fulfilled.
- This smile, however, forced He Nian to stop whatever she was about to say.
- If she said it, she knew she was going to crush someone else’s hopes. What’s worse, she might unknowingly cause her grief. She didn’t consider herself kind, but she wasn’t inhumane either. Saying that she didn’t want the child now would be too cruel to Cheng Xue and Pei Lihua.
- ...
- After a while, He Nian stepped out of the room and sat on the waiting bench in the hallway silently.
- “What are you thinking of?”
- “It’s none of your business, little brat,” He Nian blurted out softly. Albeit her use of harsh words, she seemed unusually gentle. All she wanted now was just a moment of silence to think about what she should do.
- Pei Shaoyu was fed up, “I told you, I’m not a little brat!”
- Can’t she see me as normal person?
- Surprisingly, He Nian wasn’t angry. She raised her eyes and stared at him when she heard his voice.
- He was tall, with well-proportioned facial features and muscular limbs. Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough to compensate for the fact that he was four years younger than her.
- “Say...” Before Pei Shaoyu was able to respond to her gaze, He Nian asked in a serious tone, “Are we really going to get married?”
- “You didn’t say no just now, doesn’t that mean you agree?”
- He Nian appeared shriveled when Pei Shaoyu glanced at her, but he knew how alluring she was underneath her clothes. “No matter how you look at it, I seem to be the one getting the short end of the stick,” his words were contradicting how he actually felt.
- “Fine. Let’s get married,” He Nian knew that there would be a solution for every problem. She swept her eyes over the man next to her and scoffed, “Who knew Mr. Tiny could get me pregnant.”
- The man in question spluttered at her blunt statement.
- This woman is a feisty one. She just won’t back down!
- Is she really offended by what I said? And is this reaction really necessary? How dare she insult my pride!
- But...
- Her luscious lips were tempting him. He yearned to close the gap between them and seal her lips with his own - just like he had two months ago when he silenced her lustful moans. As he thought back to that night, memories of their rendezvous came rushing forward. He could hear her breathy voice echoing in his mind, so soft that only he could discern. Now, he could only inhale sharply as he shoved his hands into his pockets, struggling to calm his raging desires.
