Chapter 6 Caught You
- Marcus dismissed Aaron. Then, his expression complex, he turned around to face Winona, and after a long pause, he softly said, “I'm sorry, Winona, it's my fault.”
- Winona shook her head, averting her gaze. “You did nothing wrong.”
- Back then, when the Shawley family fell into ruin, everyone had turned against them, yet the Yeager family merely broke off the engagement, not taking advantage of the situation to kick them while they were down. This was something she had to express her gratitude for.
- Marcus reached out, intending to embrace her, but in the end, his hand merely rested lightly on Winona's shoulder. “I was still at the Academy of Arts back then. When I heard about what happened to your family, I wanted to return, but my father had me confined in Ferundia... It was only a few days ago, when he fell critically ill, that I was allowed to return to take over the family business.”
- So that was the reason. That was why, when she was at the end of her rope, the numerous calls she made went unanswered.
- “Winona, can we go back to how things were before?”
- The way Marcus was earnestly looking at Winona had her heart softening. Just as she was about to utter something, a sudden sharp pain seized her waist. A pair of large hands gripped her waist firmly, yanking her back into a solid embrace.
- Trevor's chin rested on top of her head as he spoke leisurely to Marcus. “My dear nephew, it's been a while.”
- He then lowered his voice, growling to Winona, “Caught you, Mrs. Fleming.”
- Marcus frowned. “Uncle Trevor.”
- He didn't show any particular respect toward Trevor as he stepped forward, grasped Winona's hand, and shot a challenging glance at Trevor. “This is my girlfriend, so could you please let go of her, Uncle Trevor?”
- Trevor's hands tightened around her waist, causing Winona to wince in pain. His expression unchanged, he lowered his gaze to look at the woman in his arms. “Care to explain, Mrs. Fleming?”
- The emphasis on “Mrs. Fleming” had Marcus startled as he glanced between the two. Feeling hurt, he asked Winona, “Winona, is this true?”
- With a gentle smile on his face, Trevor whispered into Winona's ear, “I have your mother!”
- This man!
- Winona clenched her teeth. Faced with Marcus' hopeful gaze, she could only turn her head away. “Yes, I married him.”
- Trevor raised his voice arrogantly, exuding the air of a victor. “All right, Marcus, I'll bring your Aunt Winona to visit you at your place another day. For now, be a good boy and head on home.”
- Even though he was merely a few years older than Marcus, he had a penchant for asserting his seniority over the latter.
- Marcus clenched his fists in humiliation, casting a final glance at Winona. “Winona, if you ever need help, you must let me know!”
- On the way back to the Fleming residence, Winona remained on edge, waiting for Trevor to bring up her escape attempt. However, he didn't say a word about it, and slowly, Winona's heart began to settle.
- She confidently carried her luggage, intending to settle into the bedroom that Trevor had arranged for her previously. However, she let out a scream of surprise after pushing the door open.
- From the door emerged a woman wrapped in a bath towel, with steam rising off her.
- Only then did Trevor leisurely ascend the stairs, his pace neither hurried nor slow. He embraced the woman in the bath towel and announced, “Our contract ends in a month. She is the true Mrs. Fleming.”
- Biting her lip, Winona felt a wave of humiliation. “Fine, then I'll leave now, okay?”
- She was about to lug her suitcase downstairs when Trevor stopped her. “Hold on, who said you could leave? You're staying here until the contract ends!” He pointed arrogantly at his room door.
- A month later was precisely when her father's second trial would take place. Winona, swallowing her pride, sat outside Trevor's door with her suitcase.
- All right, she would endure it all!
- Trevor tugged the woman in a bath towel into the bedroom. As soon as he stepped inside, he quickly let go of her and wiped his hand against his pants as if he'd touched something unclean.
- The woman wrapped in a bath towel was none other than Melanie, who had recently moved into the Fleming residence. With a coy smile, she leaned in and asked tentatively, “Mr. Fleming, who was that woman just now?”
- Trevor awkwardly said, “She's currently my wife in name, so don't provoke her. We'll be divorced in a month, and I'll immediately welcome you into my life then.”
- Melanie clung onto his arm, sweetly agreeing with a simple “okay.” However, a glint flashed in her eyes. Upon seeing Winona, she almost thought that her ruse had been exposed.
- However, from the looks of it, neither Trevor nor Winona knew who the other person was that night. This worked out perfectly in her favor!
- Trevor felt especially uneasy. He knew for a fact that he could never fall in love with his enemy's daughter. When he married Winona, it was merely a scheme to acquire the company shares as quickly as possible.
- Yet, for some unknown reason, when the topic of divorce was brought up, he felt a sudden pang in his heart and was inexplicably filled with a sense of reluctance.
- Winona spent the entire night outside the door. By dawn the next day, she was incessantly sneezing. After finishing her breakfast, she couldn't help but throw up.
- Trevor noticed it all and called for the family doctor.
- Winona shot Trevor a puzzled look while a doctor in casual attire examined her on the couch.
- Was he really that kind-hearted?
- Trevor sneered, “I was just worried you'd fall ill in a few days and wouldn't be able to attend the trial to witness your father's fate!”
- Winona's face hardened, and her retort was biting. “I trust that the law will vindicate my father. As for those who deliberately plotted against him, they will never succeed!”
- The family doctor rapped his knuckles on the table. “Quiet down. If you want to argue, wait until after I'm done with the check-up.”
- The two fell silent, with Trevor intently watching the doctor. He was reassuring himself internally, Yes, the reason I care so much about this woman is because I want to get back at her; there's no other reason.
- Seeing the doctor's furrowed brow, Winona felt a pang of worry. She asked, “What's wrong? Isn't it just a common cold?”
- The doctor shook his head, casting a glance at the two of them. Suddenly, a smile spread across his face. “Congratulations to the both of you, you're going to be parents.”
- “What?”
