Chapter 56
- A lump formed in Freya's throat, but she swallowed it. With Jake's revelation, she wanted to shatter around him. Certainly, he knew her well. "None of what you are thinking is the case. How are you? A psychometric? Are you trying to perform a read on me? I just don't feel us anymore. For the record, I slid the engagement ring into your suit jacket to tell you how serious I am. Please let this be the last day we will come across each other. Move on." She briefly paused before continuing. "I am deeply sorry, but this is the best I can do." Without giving Jake an opportunity to respond, she stumbled towards her office, keeping her eyes on her shoes.
- A hand snaked behind her as soon as she got into her office, clasping her elbow and spinning her in place. She slapped it away instinctively, thinking it was Dante.
- It was Marley, sitting at his desk, his dull eyes zeroing in on Freya's. He looked as if he were using his bare eyes to interrogate Freya. Or, was it just her guilt that made her feel so?
