Chapter 3 It Really Was Fifty Million

  • Are my parents that convinced by their own act?
  • Just as Dominic was about to hang up the phone, Ruth hurriedly spoke up. “Dominic, hold on a moment! Your father's secretary is almost done transferring... Okay, check if you've received the message...”
  • Listening to the seemingly serious conversation between the elderly couple on the phone, Dominic couldn't help but let out a bitter laugh. He wondered if it could be possible that these two were having some sort of mental issue.
  • A secretary? Is the secretary perhaps that old yellow cat at home? Or the big white dog?
  • However, before Dominic could speak, his phone in hand dinged, signaling an incoming text message.
  • With a sense of skepticism, Dominic opened the text message. It read: Dear user of 6226***172, you've received a transfer of 50,000,000 from Patrick Lloyd at 21:12. Your remaining balance is 50,000,000.23.
  • This card was the only private card that Dominic had, and the amount on it had never exceeded ten bucks.
  • Upon seeing the text message notification, Dominic was taken aback. His fingers trembled involuntarily as he counted the numerous zeros in the message. “One, two, three...” Seven zeros in total. Could this really be fifty million?
  • Could this really be true?
  • Dominic pinched his own face, feeling a sharp pain. This is not a dream! He confirmed once again, and it was indeed seven zeros!
  • Could it be that the bank sent the wrong message?
  • Dominic was still lost in his thoughts when Ruth's voice echoed again from the phone. “Dominic, did you receive it? Respond to me... Hello, why aren't you saying anything? Are you okay?”
  • Only then did Dominic snap back to reality. “Uh, I'm fine! Um, Mom... Wait a bit. I'll call you back in a while!”
  • After hanging up the phone with Ruth, Dominic immediately opened WhatsApp and found his friend's contact, Terrence Leigh. This Terrence, a bit of a simple and honest character, was one of the few friends Dominic had at the courier company.
  • Dominic was not as physically strong as Terrence. Usually, for larger and heavier items, Terrence would eagerly help Dominic with the delivery. Knowing that there were times when Dominic couldn't get enough to eat, Terrence had treated Dominic to numerous meals.
  • Terrence's own family circumstances weren't that great, with elders to care for and children to raise. Yet, he had always been there to help. For this, Dominic was deeply grateful.
  • After a brief hesitation, Dominic pressed the gift button and sent Terrence a two hundred monetary gift.
  • Dominic had no money in his WhatsApp account, and this bank card was linked to it. Originally, there were only twenty-three cents in the bank card. If the text message showing fifty million was false, then he definitely wouldn't be able to send the monetary gift. But if it was true, then he could send it.
  • Enter my password!
  • And send!
  • With trembling fingers, Dominic pressed the send button, his heart pounding with extreme anxiety.
  • Dominic was scared.
  • Dominic feared that this was all just a dream.
  • Yet, there was a glimmer of hope in Dominic's heart, hoping that this was real. Even if it was all a dream, Dominic didn't want to wake up. Over the past twenty years, Dominic had truly grown weary of poverty.
  • Dominic stared intently at the payment interface on his phone. After the gift symbol spun around twice, it was successfully sent.
  • Subsequently, the cell phone chimed once more with a message notification. It read: You made a payment of 200 at 21:14, leaving a balance of 49,999,800.23 on your card.
  • Holy cr*p! It worked? Dominic stood there, holding his phone, stunned for quite a while.
  • Was it really fifty million?
  • Dominic's heart trembled with excitement. He sent another gift to Terrence, then another, and another...
  • Ding!
  • Ding!
  • Ding!
  • Dominic had sent Terrence five monetary gifts in a row before he finally stopped. Staring at the mobile message indicating a balance of 49,999,000.23, it took Dominic quite a while to regain his composure.
  • Does my family really own a mine?
  • Am I also a scion?
  • Can I also hold my head high and live with dignity now?
  • No, I need to confirm with my parents regarding this!
  • Before Dominic could even dial his parents' number, his close friend Terrence called him. “Dom, what's gotten into you? Why did you send me five monetary gifts all at once? Where did you get so much money from? It's not even payday yet, is it?”
  • Dominic burst into a fit of laughter. “Terrence! Those are gifts to you. I'm just happy. Haha!”
  • “You've been drinking, haven't you? You didn't secretly use Cherilyn's card, did you? Let me tell you. I'll send it back to you right away. If you upset Cherilyn, you're in for a hard time!” It was quite clear that Terrence didn't believe Dominic could have so much money.
  • In regard to Terrence's honesty, Dominic felt a deep sense of gratitude. “No need, Terrence! You can keep it for now. I'll explain everything when we meet tomorrow!”
  • After hanging up the phone with Terrence, Dominic quickly dialed his father's number. He took a moment to calm his emotions before asking, “Dad, tell me the truth. Do we really own a mine?”
  • With a serious expression, Patrick responded, “Yes, it was in the twentieth century when your great-grandfather went to South Alendor and established our family's foundation. Then, your great-grandfather had only one son, your grandfather. Your grandfather had only me, and I only have you...”
  • After Patrick's explanation, Dominic finally understood. This matter was indeed true. The entire family had been the sole heir since his grandfather's generation. They owned ninety-nine mines at home, which were undoubtedly his. He would never exhaust them in his lifetime.
  • “But why was our family so poor since I was a kid?” Dominic asked, his face full of confusion. He watched other children eating candy while he could only quietly pick up their discarded wrappers from behind and secretly lick them... In college, in order to earn money through part-time jobs, he even had to sleep on the streets...
  • The hardships he endured since childhood were simply unbearable for an ordinary person.
