Chapter 1 Would You Like To Come With Me?

  • Aileen Dean remained inconsolable on the third day after her breakup with Cole Wagner. In the middle of the night, she decided to take a cab into the city for some fondue.
  • Unfortunately, she ran into two of Cole's colleagues at the entrance and was forced to share a table with them.
  • One of them was Alvin Kain, the star of the cardiology department.
  • Also known as King Kain.
  • His skills were unmatched, and he was very attractive.
  • Being so well-known in cardiology at such a young age was quite an accomplishment.
  • Even in the dimly lit, noisy restaurant, his good looks stood out.
  • According to their conversation, they had just finished a surgery. Alvin's expression didn't reveal his feelings about it. Instead, he listened and occasionally used medical terms that Aileen didn't understand. Suddenly, he reached over for the water jug in front of Aileen.
  • His sleeves were rolled up, revealing his fair skin. The muscles in his arm were tense as he poured himself some water. The veins and well-defined muscles were incredibly alluring.
  • His long fingers wrapped around his glass.
  • His fingernails were neatly trimmed. The pink color of his nail bed was distinct and reflected the health of a young man.
  • Perhaps sensing Aileen's gaze on him, Alvin asked, "When is Cole coming?"
  • His voice sounded tired and rough.
  • Aileen froze. She didn't realize he was talking to her.
  • "I'm here alone. I didn't invite him," she stammered.
  • "Did you two have a fight?" Reg asked curiously.
  • Aileen shook her head.
  • Maybe they thought she was foolish because she looked young and naive.
  • Cole had cheated on her with a new intern in their department. That girl was pretty and had an attractive figure.
  • Aileen was sure she had plenty of men drooling over her.
  • Aileen was usually too busy to check up on Cole. If she hadn't stumbled upon explicit photos the girl had sent him on his phone, Aileen would still be oblivious.
  • The peppers in the fondue were making her eyes sting.
  • Realizing something was wrong, Reg tactfully refrained from asking further questions.
  • Halfway through the meal, Reg received a call urging him to go home.
  • Only Aileen and Alvin remained.
  • Surprisingly, it was peaceful between them. They ate in silence, both enjoying the quietness.
  • Alvin stood up to pay the bill.
  • But Aileen had no intention of letting him pay. She followed him and said, "Give me your bank details, I'll send you the money."
  • "Can you drive?" Alvin asked as he forwarded her the details.
  • "Yes," Aileen nodded, but she didn't quite understand what he meant.
  • "Give me a ride home?" He never took his attention away from his phone. He handed her the keys to his car and added, "Consider it your payment."
  • He was treating her like his designated driver.
  • Aileen followed him out of the fondue house. Alvin's car was parked nearby. He drove a black Volkswagen Teramont.
  • Cole had mentioned that Alvin came from a prominent family. His family owned a well-known private hospital in the western part of the city.
  • Across the street was one of Easthalia's famous luxury five-star hotels. Standing by the car, lost in thought, Aileen stared blankly at the bustling street.
  • She opened the door and leaned towards Alvin. "The fondue was your treat. How about I treat you to a night at the hotel?"
  • Alvin's expression remained unchanged. "I don't like getting involved with my colleagues' partners."
  • Aileen said, "It's hard for me to believe that you don't know about Cole dating the intern in your department."
  • Alvin looked at her carefully.
  • A man like him never lacked attention from women. Aileen knew her qualities, but she didn't know if they appealed to him.
  • Just as she was about to take back her offer, Alvin smirked and said, "Don't regret it. If you come crying to me later, there's nothing I can do about it."
