Chapter 16 But I'm Married
- Isaac glanced at her, thinking that Natalie seemed quite filial.
- His suspicions eased, assuming it was just a coincidence.
- It was normal for Yael to mistake someone and throw a tantrum.
- Mentioning Natalie's family, Isaac casually asked, "What do your family members do?"
- Thinking of Philbert and Daisy, Natalie didn't want to acknowledge them as her family, and the thought of Melissa in the hospital made her too sad to bring up.
- "Nothing much … " she mumbled, looking down.
- Isaac paused mid-signature and took another look at her.
- She didn't seem shy, more like she was hiding something.
- "What's the matter? Seeing someone?"
- "No, not really … " Natalie carefully considered her words.
- "But I am married."
- With a sharp sound, the pen scratched an abrupt line across the paper, leaving an ugly ink stain.
- Isaac's previously relaxed demeanour turned tense, his pupils contracting.
- "What did you say?!"
- "I said I'm already married."
- Even though the marriage was strange and she hadn't even met her husband, technically, she was a married woman.
- "Natalie!" Isaac slammed the pen on the desk. "Then why did you write 'single' on your employment form?"
- She had only had a wedding ceremony with the Fosters and hadn't completed any legal documentation with her so-called husband. Officially, her status was single.
- Honestly, this marriage felt non-existent to her, and she often forgot it even happened. So, when filling out the employment form, she had casually marked 'single'.
- "Don't worry, I won't ask for paid marriage leave."
- Isaac was taken aback. She still had the nerve to joke? Did she think he was upset about her taking a few days of marriage leave?
- "You're so shameless and unfaithful, what's the difference between you and … those who mess around outside their marriage?" he snapped.
- Mess around? What had she done? With him?
- Natalie wasn't someone with a mild temper, and being spoken to so harshly made her angry.
- "And you have the nerve to lecture me? Don't you bear any responsibility for what happened? I was drunk, but what about you? You should take the main responsibility! Did you even ask if I was married when you took me back to the hotel? Unbelievable!"
- Isaac's eyes flashed with cold fury, making her shiver. His look was enough to make her think he might strangle her at any moment.
- But what did she have to fear? She hadn't done anything wrong.
- "And by the way, Mr. Foster, I wasn't even married when that happened, so don't pin your accusations on me!"
- It wasn't just that one time. What about after that? She was always around, catching his attention. Didn't that count for anything?
- Even he found these thoughts absurd and couldn't bring himself to voice them.
- A heavy feeling settled in his chest, making it hard to breathe.
- Seeing Isaac fall silent, Natalie glared at him fiercely before storming out of the office.
- She returned to her desk, still fuming, but also feeling a bit hurt by his outburst.
- Alvin noticed something was wrong and approached her with concern. "Hey, what happened, Natalie? Did Mr. Foster scold you?"
- "Who knows what's wrong with him!" Natalie pouted angrily. "Bringing up things that happened so long ago, just to dig up old dirt! Is he settling scores or just looking for reasons to yell?"
- Alvin gently patted her back to comfort her. "Alright, don't be upset. You know how Mr. Foster can be. But what was it about? The project this morning?"
- "Well … " Natalie hesitated, then clammed up, not saying another word.
- It was about that time she slept with him without getting paid!
