Chapter 2 Call off Our Engagement

  • Marcus refused to accompany her to the hospital, prompting Zoey to resolve to go alone.
  • With no time to change her attire, she hastily threw on a coat and stealthily slipped away to the hospital unnoticed by the servant.
  • The rain continued to pour heavily, its tumultuous downpour adding to her unsettled state of mind.
  • Upon exiting the car, Zoey made a beeline for Jonathan's ward. As she approached closer, her strides grew heavier, and she found herself hesitating to proceed.
  • She couldn't bring herself to face him...
  • Outside Jonathan's ward stood a row of bodyguards, among them Frank Holmes and Finn Holmes, Jonathan's most trusted associates.
  • As Zoey cautiously approached, Frank and Finn took notice of her.
  • "How dare that contemptible woman show up here?" Finn nearly uttered a curse.
  • "Ignore her."
  • Even the typically affable Frank frowned, his displeasure toward Zoey evident in his gaze.
  • Because of her, Jonathan had endured so much. The doctors warned that Jonathan's leg might not fully recover!
  • They truly couldn't fathom what Jonathan found appealing in her—so foolish and obstinate!
  • Zoey had now reached them. Seeing their reluctance to engage, she initiated the conversation. "Is Jonathan inside?"
  • Finn ignored her, and Frank, concerned for Jonathan, nodded with a tense expression.
  • "I wish to see him..." Zoey acknowledged her past mistakes, her voice tinged with uncertainty.
  • "Mr. Holmes is in a precarious state right now. Miss Saldana, if you have any shred of conscience left, you should refrain from entering and further upsetting him."
  • Each visit Zoey paid to Jonathan only seemed to aggravate him more. Jonathan couldn't endure any more disturbances.
  • Zoey didn't intend to upset him; she wanted to console him!
  • Jonathan's leg could have been healed initially. It was his procrastination that had resulted in a permanent disability.
  • Knowing no amount of pleading would sway them, Zoey raised her voice and cried out.
  • "Jonathan!"
  • "Jonathan!"
  • "Jonathan!"
  • One after another, Zoey called out until her voice grew hoarse, yet the door to the ward remained firmly shut.
  • Zoey awoke soaked from the rain, her body still frail. She had shouted for over ten minutes, her face flushed and coughing persistently.
  • "Miss Saldana, you should return now," Frank advised. His concern lay not with her but with Jonathan. Knowing Jonathan well, he could fathom the depths of his current distress.
  • Zoey realized further shouting was futile. With reluctance, she glanced at the tightly shut ward door, then turned and departed.
  • Inside the ward, Jonathan sat on the bed in hospital garb, eyes downcast and hands on his knees, enveloped in a heavy air of melancholy.
  • Outside, Zoey's voice gradually faded. He knew she had finally surrendered and left.
  • He desired to see her, yet he couldn't muster the courage to face her.
  • He was self-aware; if he were to die here, Zoey likely wouldn't even spare him a glance.
  • She must be here to call off our engagement.
  • Jonathan sighed bitterly. Yet, at that instant, he heard faint rustling outside the window, accompanied by a faint scream of a girl.
  • It sounded like Zoey.
  • Jonathan suspected it was his imagination, but the feeling persisted. He yearned to investigate but found himself immobilized.
  • "Frank!"
  • He called out, and Frank and Finn rushed in.
  • "Go check outside the window."
  • Frank appeared perplexed but said little. He swiftly ventured outside.
  • Then he spotted a girl skulking near the window, and their eyes locked.
  • "Miss Saldana?"
