Chapter 9 Heart Ache

  • Helen and Jason were still exchanging pleasantries with Yoel when Bethany walked over with an icy look on her face.
  • “Let's go home. I'm tired.” Bethany's voice was cold. She didn't even spare a glance at me, acting as if I was nonexistent.
  • Helen said, “Ah, why are you in such a hurry? It's not often we see Mr. Cox. Let's stay and chat a bit.”
  • Bethany ignored her mother. She tossed her luggage at me and strode off.
  • I gritted my teeth, feeling the urge to hurl her luggage aside, but I managed to pull myself together in the end.
  • I was still uncertain about what had actually happened last night. Even if I wanted to get angry, I should at least investigate and discover the truth first.
  • Therefore, I carried the luggage and quietly trod on her heels. Unexpectedly, Yoel caught up with us.
  • Yoel chirped, “Bethany, let me send you home. I just bought a Ferrari, so you can accompany me to test drive the new car.”
  • “A Ferrari?” Helen exclaimed. “That's an expensive car! How much did it cost?”
  • “It's not much, just over seven million.” Yoel smiled faintly. “I earned a little profit from my last project, so I bought the car to reward myself.”
  • “You're indeed a promising young man, Mr. Cox. It's admirable how you're able to become such a capable businessman at such a young age!” Helen complimented Yoel with heartfelt sincerity. At the same time, she glanced at me. Her eyes gleamed with sheer coldness.
  • I knew what she meant by that look. In her opinion, I was no different from a lowly beggar compared to the nobleman-like Yoel.
  • Helen whispered, “Bethany, why don't you go with Mr. Cox? You two can take the opportunity to discuss some business-related matters too.”
  • Bethany didn't respond, but Yoel seized the chance and uttered cheerily, “That's right, Bethany. It just so happens that my family's company is looking to invest in some medical projects recently. We can talk more about it.”
  • As he spoke, we arrived at the exit.
  • A fiery red sports car was parked at the entrance, capturing the attention of numerous passers-by with its extraordinary allure.
  • A young man stood beside the car, and the moment he spotted Yoel, he quickly jogged over. “Mr. Cox, this is your car!”
  • Yoel received the car keys and strode over to open the car door, flashing a dazzling smile and chivalrously inviting Bethany to get in the vehicle. “Ms. Xenos, please be my guest.”
  • Many girls around gazed at Bethany with envy. Self-deprecation crept into my heart as I stared at my wife, waiting for her to make the choice.
  • After all, how many girls could refuse the invitation of a gallant scion with a luxury car?
  • Helen urged her daughter, “Bethany, go ahead. Don't keep Mr. Cox waiting.”
  • Bethany hesitated as if considering whether or not to get in the sports car.
  • My heart ached again at the sight. Bethany, your husband is here to pick you up in person, yet you're dithering about getting into another man's car? You can't even be bothered to hide your unfaithfulness already, is that it?
  • Taking in Bethany's indecision, Yoel grinned at me and said, “Marcel, I have some business matters to discuss with Bethany. You won't mind, right?”
  • Instead of answering, I walked toward the Maybach with the luggage and put them into the trunk, using my actions to tell him I do mind!
  • Bethany seemed a little surprised. She pondered briefly and ultimately sighed, shaking her head in resignation. “I'm sorry, Mr. Cox. I need to go home with my family. Let's discuss business another time.”
  • Sitting inside the Maybach, I clenched my fists, thinking that if Bethany had truly accepted Yoel's offer, that meant our marriage had indeed come to an end. If that were the case, that would be the denouement of our relationship.
  • However, Bethany didn't get into Yoel's car in the end, making me wonder if I could still salvage our marriage.
  • Yet, when I saw her frosty countenance, I couldn't help but feel a twinge in my heart.
  • Is it honestly that agonizing for you to come home with me? If I hadn't come, would you have followed Yoel home with alacrity?
  • Yoel was infuriated after Bethany rejected him. He stood in front of our car to block our path, seemingly wanting to speak further with Bethany.
  • However, I wasn't going to accommodate him, so I honked the car horn twice, prompting him to shift his attention to me.
  • At that moment, I had braced myself to fight him.
  • Strangely, Yoel didn't allow me that opportunity. When he noticed the pass on the driver's side windshield, his facial expression stiffened, and he immediately moved out of the way without uttering a word.
  • Subsequently, I ignored him and chauffeured everyone home.
  • Helen sat beside Bethany, nagging her daughter to keep in touch with Yoel for the sake of their family business.
  • All the while, Helen had disregarded me, her son-in-law, showing no consideration for my feelings.
  • I didn't speak either. Instead, I focused all my attention on Bethany.
  • Since she got into the car, her brows had been tightly furrowed, and her expression was grim. She also didn't say a word the whole time.
  • Her demeanor gave me the impression that she was deeply irked.
  • My heart throbbed with anguish. Is it so vexing for you to come home with me? Is Yoel that important to you?
