Chapter 6 Drive My Car
- I was just about to leave when I spotted Calvin coming my way.
- “Good morning, Mr. Larson!” Calvin greeted me cheerily, clearly in high spirits.
- “Good morning!” I gave a nod before asking, “Professor Harrison, can I trouble you with a few things?”
- Hearing that, Calvin cheerfully responded, “Mr. Larson, please don't hesitate to let me know what you need. Thanks to the medication you gifted me yesterday, I was able to heal my boss' old injuries instantly. As a result, I am now the second major shareholder of Spencer's Pharmacy!”
- I had heard of Spencer Clark, the boss of Spencer's Pharmacy, and was aware that he had a past as a member of the underworld. He was indeed an impressive and formidable individual.
- I elaborated, “My little sister needs time to recuperate. Can she stay here and be under your care?”
- “Rest assured, Mr. Larson!” Calvin replied at once, “I'll personally monitor her condition here, and I'll also hire the best medical staff to take care of Ms. Larson.”
- “Thank you, Professor Harrison.” I bobbed my head, making a mental note of his kindness.
- “This is my duty,” Calvin chirped.
- “In that case, I'll leave this place to you,” I stated as I walked to the door, then came to an abrupt halt. “By the way, Professor Harrison, is there a car rental place nearby?”
- “Car rental?” Calvin was momentarily stunned. “What kind of car are you looking to rent, and for what purpose, Mr. Larson?”
- “I need to pick someone up from the airport.”
- “How many seats do you require?”
- “A standard sedan will do.”
- “Why rent one, then?” The corners of Calvin's lips curled into a smile. “I have a car that I hardly ever use. You can drive it for the time being.”
- As he spoke, Calvin called his driver to bring the car around.
- When I stepped out of the pharmacy, a black sedan slowly approached.
- The car's logo was strange, resembling two overlapping M's.
- The body of the car was elongated, significantly longer than a BMW 7 Series I had seen before, giving off an extremely luxurious vibe.
- The car plate number seemed quite ordinary as I didn't notice anything special about it. There was a small logo sticker on the windshield, which seemed like some sort of access pass, but I wasn't sure what it was for.
- Calvin chuckled. “Mr. Larson, I bought this car two years ago and haven't driven it before. You can use it for now.”
- Although I didn't recognize the brand of the car, I knew it must be of significant value. After all, how could someone of Calvin's status possibly drive an ordinary car?
- Nevertheless, I didn't refuse his offer as I needed a vehicle right then. Besides, I reckoned the prescription I gave Calvin was worth hundreds of these cars.
- “Thank you very much, Professor Harrison.”
- Calvin waved his hand. “Please, don't mention it, Mr. Larson.”
- I nodded and drove off.
- Bethany's family lived in Safe Haven Community, an old and rather rundown residential area in Glenport.
- The Xenos family was only considered a small clan in Glenport, with less than one hundred million in family assets.
- Bethany's father, Jason Xenos, was once a strong contender for the family headship. Unfortunately, having only two daughters and no son directly disqualified him from the race to acquire the right of inheritance.
- Later on, John Xenos, Jason's younger brother, saw an opportunity to reclaim the family fortune from Jason while Quentin was gravely ill. He used this chance to pressure Bethany into getting married, claiming that it would bring good luck to their ailing patriarch.
- Bethany was once heralded as the most beautiful woman in Glenport, a fact that caused quite a sensation and drew numerous suitors who vied for her affection.
- Nevertheless, despite all the attention and numerous suitors, Bethany ultimately chose me, an ordinary individual with no notable background or status.
- Her decision to choose me was solely based on her desire to avoid getting intimate with any man.
- Consequently, an ambitious man would never have been her preference; instead, she sought an honest and submissive man whom she could easily control, making me the ideal choice in her eyes.
- Following my marriage into Bethany's family, Quentin's health did, in fact, show signs of improvement.
- Even with the improvement in Quentin's health, John didn't pass up the opportunity to make things difficult for Jason. He argued that Jason's assets would end up in the hands of an outsider, given that Bethany had married a man with a meager background.
- Consequently, Quentin revoked all the family assets that were in Jason's possession, leading to Jason and his family's downfall from their previous status and wealth.
- Their spacious penthouse was bestowed upon John's son, the future heir of the Xenos family, while Jason and his family were forced to move to a modest three-bedroom house in a run-down residential area, spanning just over a hundred square meters. The drastic shift in their quality of life was evident.
- Under such circumstances, I became a constant source of annoyance and frustration for Jason and his family.
- From their perspective, they believed that their unfortunate state was largely my fault.
- Furthermore, they considered my perceived incompetence to be the reason their family became a subject of ridicule and mockery in Glenport.
- My mother-in-law, Helen, often said, “If it weren't for Marcel, the good-for-nothing, Bethany could've married into a wealthy family and achieved great success in life!”
- For the past three years, I had been meekly and obediently taking care of their family, almost like a housekeeper.
- However, throughout this time, they had never allowed Sabine to set foot inside their house, not even once.
- They took all the wages I earned over the course of three years, but when my sister fell ill, they heartlessly refused to contribute a single cent toward her medical expenses.
- Furthermore, Bethany had done something disloyal to me. Who could endure such unjust treatment?
