Chapter 4 Water Of Life

  • Calvin closed the door before turning to look at me with a respectful expression. “Greetings, I'm Calvin Harrison. May I know your name, good sir?”
  • “It's Marcel Larson.”
  • “Oh, hello, Mr. Larson!” Calvin took a deep breath before turning to look at Sabine, who was on the hospital bed. In a low voice, he said, “Is there anything I can help with, Mr. Larson?”
  • I was quiet for a while before reaching out for the pen and paper on the table to scribble a prescription.
  • “Please get some ingredients for me,” I said as I passed him the prescription. At the same time, I fished for some money in my pocket, but I could only retrieve a few smaller notes.
  • A wave of awkwardness hit me. There were many expensive ingredients on the prescription, and it would probably amount to over two thousand.
  • What I had would certainly not be enough, but it seemed like Calvin did not mind.
  • He quickly took the prescription and said in a trembling voice, “Mr. Larson, I have some authority in Spencer's Pharmacy, so you don't need to spend any money for these ingredients.”
  • Glancing at Calvin, I realized why he was so generous. Thus, I slowly bobbed my head and said, “Thank you, sir, but I don't like to owe anyone any favors. Please bring ten of each ingredient on the prescription, and I'll let you have this prescription for your own use.”
  • A look of delighted surprise manifested in Calvin's eyes when he heard me say that.
  • After all, I was the envoy of the goddess of health. Whatever prescription I wrote would certainly be a priceless treasure.
  • “Thank you so much, Mr. Larson!” Calvin uttered again, holding onto the prescription as if it were gold, before running out of the room.
  • Soon, he was back with bags of various sizes.
  • “Mr. Larson, these are the ingredients you've asked for. Please take a look at them,” Calvin said.
  • That was exactly what I did. It seemed like Calvin had categorized the ingredients, and I could tell from the smell and the appearance of the ingredients that they were of high quality.
  • I had inherited divine knowledge from the goddess of health, including knowledge of medicine from her. Although I had never seen the ingredients before, I could tell with one glance whether they were good or bad.
  • “Thank you, Professor Harrison.” I then took the bags from him and carefully took a dose's worth of ingredients out.
  • At the same time, Calvin brought a medicinal herb steeper into the room. Then, he stood at the side and watched me work with bated breath.
  • While the prescription was important, what was more crucial was still the preparation process.
  • Many unique prescriptions had to be paired with special preparation methods, or else they would not work as intended.
  • I did not plan to keep any secrets about the prescription. Since I had told Calvin that I was going to give him the prescription, I was going to teach him everything concerning it.
  • Of course, I did not throw all the ingredients at once. Instead, there was an order in which I put them in.
  • As I placed them into the steeper, I explained to Calvin, “Time, heat, order, and the quality of the steeper are all important. You have to remember each and every one of the steps, or else the medicine won't be as potent if you make any mistakes during its preparation process.”
  • Like a student, Calvin was jotting the information down on a piece of paper while nodding along.
  • An hour later, the medicine had been concocted.
  • As I opened the lid, a gentle and pleasant fragrance filled the room. The smell held no peculiarities; rather, it rejuvenated me as I took in its essence.
  • The weariness I had felt from the previous operation dissipated, and I felt revitalized.
  • Calvin also savored the scent, seemingly relishing its pleasant aroma. “Mr. Larson, what is this? Why... Why does it smell so delightful?”
  • In a composed manner, I explained, “I call it the Water of Life. It possesses remarkable healing properties, particularly for injuries. If an average person were to consume it, it could extend their lifespan and enhance their physical strength.”
  • The Water of Life was a liquid medicine widely renowned among soldiers and mercenaries. According to legend, it was believed to have been invented by the goddess of health, Isis.
  • As long as the wound was not fatal, the Water of Life had the power to cure it. However, with the disappearance of the gods, these miraculous medicines also vanished from history.
  • I then took a test tube and filled it with the medicine before administering it to Sabine.
  • At that moment, I witnessed the wounds on Sabine's body slowly but visibly heal before my eyes.
  • “Th-This is a miracle!” Calvin cried out. He had never heard or seen anything like it.
  • When he turned to look at the bottle of medicine, I could sense that he was contemplating the exorbitant price even a single drop of it would fetch.
  • Nevertheless, I was more relieved about Sabine's recovery. At the very least, I had saved my sister.
  • I poured half of the bottle of medicine and handed it to Calvin, saying, “This is for you.”
  • “Thank you, Mr. Larson!”
  • Without hesitation, Calvin took the bottle I handed to him.
  • After carefully sealing the bottle, he placed it in his pocket with great care. When he turned to face me once more, his face clearly displayed gratitude.
  • Even though Sabine had been saved, her breathing was still uneven.
  • Hence, I remained by her side, looking after her the entire time. She was my sole remaining family. No matter what, I was determined to protect her and ensure nothing would harm her.
  • While I kept vigil, Calvin came by a few times. He had also arranged for the staff to bring me some food once in a while, but I was not in the mood to eat.
  • A little past ten that night, Sabine's breathing evened out, and I finally sighed in relief.
  • Now, Sabine Larson was truly safe and sound.
  • It was only then that I realized how hungry I was. Although the food in the room had gone cold by then, it did not matter as I polished them off the plates.
  • Taking out my phone, I ruminated for a long while before deciding to call Bethany.
  • Despite Bethany not harboring any feelings for me, at the end of the day, we have still been husband and wife for three years. Her heartlessness would undoubtedly shatter me.
  • After ringing for a few times, the call went through, and my heart leaped into my throat.
  • “Bethany,” I started, but before I could say anything else, a man's voice came from the other end of the line.
  • “I'm not Bethany.”
  • I grimaced. It was already almost eleven at night, so why was a man answering my wife's phone?
  • “Who are you?” I questioned in a low voice. “Where's Bethany?”
  • “Bethany? Oh, well, she just underwent a vigorous exercise, so she's taking a shower right now to get rid of the sweat,” came the man's smug voice. “As for who I am... Hehe. Why don't you take a guess?”
