Chapter 11 Something Has Happened To Professor Harrison

  • “W-What exactly happened, Bethany?” I asked in a whisper.
  • Bethany swept her gaze over me, her expression indifferent. “Nothing.”
  • At that, I tried my best to maintain my composure. “Please tell me. Perhaps I can help you.”
  • “You, help me? How would you do that? Marcel, you can't even take care of yourself, yet you want to help me? What gives?” Bethany shot me a cold look.
  • That left me at a loss for words, for I could not tell her that I had obtained the goddess of health's inheritance and was presently a divine healer.
  • The Larson family's decimation was still a mystery. As such, I could not reveal my situation before I was sufficiently capable.
  • I had to get to the bottom of her feelings toward me before I decided whether to tell her about it.
  • “Just focus on yourself, Marcel! It's been three years. You've worked at the hospital for that long, and everyone else is advancing in rank except you. I heard that you didn't go to work the whole of yesterday. Where did you go? Do you know how difficult it was to get your current job?” Bethany growled in frustration.
  • “Something came up yesterday,” I explained softly.
  • “What was it?” Bethany questioned.
  • “I...” Words abruptly eluded me. I wanted to tell her about Sabine, but the fact that she had not picked up any of my calls was already an obvious indication of her attitude.
  • If I were to speak of my sister again, I would never receive a hint of sympathy from her. Contrarily, I would even end up ridiculed.
  • Gritting my teeth, I finally could not resist asking, “Then, why didn't you answer a single call in the past few days?”
  • Bethany was momentarily taken aback and stared at me for a long while. Without warning, she snapped, “I have the freedom to decide whether I want to answer any calls! Do you really think you can control me, Marcel?”
  • “How could you say that? Who am I to you, Bethany?” I bellowed, vexed to the core.
  • “And who am I to you?” Bethany parried.
  • Hanging my head, I went silent. If it were in the past, I would have unhesitatingly answered that she was my wife.
  • Right then, however, I would never say that because it sickened me.
  • At my lack of a response, Bethany grew even more irate. “Get out of here! I don't want to see you anymore!” she barked.
  • That night, I tossed and turned, but sleep did not come. When I woke up the next day, Bethany had already left.
  • I did not want to stay home and listen to Helen's insults, so I left and headed to Spencer's Pharmacy.
  • Calvin was not there that day, but the employees in the pharmacy treated me deferentially.
  • In the sick bay, Sabine was in good hands. Calvin had specifically arranged for two nurses to keep watch over her.
  • Mere seconds after I had taken a seat, a flurry of footsteps suddenly rang out from outside.
  • On the heels of that, Calvin's driver, Devin, sprinted in.
  • At the sight of me, he swiftly ran over and exclaimed, “Y-You're finally here, Mr. Larson!”
  • “What's wrong?” I asked, curious.
  • “The matter is rather time-sensitive. Could you please follow me? I'll explain along the way. Something has happened to Professor Harrison!” Devin uttered frantically.
  • Immediately, I shot to my feet. Calvin had been pretty good to me, so I could not sit back and do nothing when it had something to do with him.
  • “Let's go!” I then left with Devin. The latter drove toward the suburbs like a bat out of hell.
  • During the drive, he briefly filled me in on the situation.
  • It turned out that the matter stemmed from Spencer.
  • Spencer's backer was a big shot named Bruce Neal, the leader of the underworld forces in the whole of Glenport, dubbed the King of Glenport.
  • In Glenport, even the patriarchs of the top ten families had to bow their heads in submission whenever they encountered the man.
  • Bruce had only one daughter, and she slipped into a coma after having a car accident last year. He hired countless renowned doctors to treat her but to no avail.
  • After Spencer had consumed the Water of Life given by Calvin, he found it miraculously effective. Hence, he instantly asked the latter for another bottle and gifted it to Bruce for his daughter.
  • It went without saying that the efficacy of the Water of Life was remarkable, and it worked miraculously after Bruce's daughter consumed it. However, she remained unconscious.
  • Therefore, Spencer summoned Calvin and asked him to treat Bruce's daughter personally.
  • Aware of his own capabilities, Calvin initially declined. However, another divine healer provoked him at that time. In a fit of rage, he decided to treat her. Alas, he ended up failing in his attempt. Worse still, her condition turned critical.
  • A so-called divine healer was a doctor who mastered some magic power and could use magic and witchcraft.
  • They could often heal diseases untreatable by modern medicine. For that reason, they were very much favored among the upper classes.
  • Calvin was also a divine healer, but his magic power was limited.
  • The other divine healer then seized the opportunity to declare to Bruce that Calvin was a quack and that the previous medicine was stolen from him.
  • Flying into a rage, Bruce wanted to kill Calvin. Calvin hurriedly told the man about me, upon which Bruce gave Devin two hours to fetch me before he killed Calvin.
