Chapter 3

  • SANDRA'S POV
  • "I expect him to leave the company at any time, with my consent". Edward Smith was saying but I cuts him off
  • "No, grandpa, that is not the deal. The agreement is that we are terminating the contract you had with my father, secondly, you are going to pay him all what he is entitled to and thirdly, we are leaving the smith family and no longer part of the smith family, so please change your statement," I stated calmly as I stared at him in his eyes.
  • "Young girl, you do not disrespect your elders like this!" The lawyer said, his tone heavy with contempt.
  • I was taken aback by the lawyer's tone. Why so much contempt when I had done nothing to him? I narrowed my gaze at him as it crossed my mind that he might be up to something.
  • “How can you speak back to the elders in that manner?” He chided.
  • “It is none of your business how I respond to anyone in this family”, I replied coldly, my patience running out.
  • Anger darkened in the lawyer's eyes as he stared at me, “Where is your lawyer? Do you know who I am?”
  • I scoffed, “Who cares?”
  • “How dare you speak to me in such a manner, I am Enoch from City A firm institute, the best lawyer in the whole of City A and a nobody like you dares speak to me like that?” Who the hell do you think you are?”
  • I glared at him and swallowed back a sharp retort that jumped on my lips.
  • Enoch then turned to William and his gaze raked him from head to toe, his eyes filled with disdain and his tone condescending as he stared at him. "So this is your so-called lawyer, he must not be a renowned lawyer because I don't even know him, and you want him to compromise with me, what a joke!" He laughed as if he saw idiots.
  • "Well, you have eyes but cannot see; I am not sure how people trust you and choose you as their lawyer, but this is not my lawyer; my lawyer will be here in five minutes." I chided him, my tone deliberate as if I am talking to a child. I could practically see the smoke oozing out from his head as his face reddened with anger.
  • I had always had the intention of freeing my father someday. I had hoped to finish school, get a good job and then help my parents. A sudden marriage was never in the picture but now that it had to happen, I would seize every opportunity to free my father from slavery of his family.
  • I heard William chuckled beside me but he quickly straightened his face when I turned to stare at him.
  • Enoch was so offended that I told him he had eyes but couldn't see. He looked like he couldn't believe his ears! It must be the first time he had been insulted since becoming a lawyer for City A firm institute.
  • It was no secret that everyone wants to do favors for him whenever they see him. But I am not everyone and I do not care about him.
  • “How dare you”, He clenched out, “You will regret this, I will make sure that you regret ever insulting me” he seethed pointing his fingers at me.
  • "If your lawyer is not here, I am leaving; I can't believe Mr. Smith called me here to get insulted by a tramp like you”.
  • “Like I said, respect is earned and you did not earn my respect”, I answered coldly. I did not bat an eye or shook in the face of his threat, I was very calm. My eyes never give away any emotions.
  • “Perhaps, you think that you are getting married to a very rich man, should I remind you that you are getting married to a loser? Don't feel so proud dear cousin”. Stacey sneered.
  • Lucy Smith turned towards my father, “I am so ashamed of you and your daughter, all she does is insult everyone, you should have done better in bringing her up”.
  • “Grandma, should I remind you that I was taken away from my parents as an infant to a family I do not know, I did not grow up under the care of my parents, why blame them?” I replied in defence of my father.
  • “You little wretch, shut the hell up”, Lucy hissed, looking ready to smack me across the face
  • "See, Is this the girl that you are so proud of? She can't even respect elders," Edward Smith remarked. "I knew this little girl would never bring anything good to this family, we have had nothing but misfortune since she was born, now that she's back and now this house can't have peace."
  • My dad, looking fed up with all the insults thrown at me, answered his parents:"Mum, dad, Sandra is also your granddaughter, so you can’t call her all that and what wrong did she do! If she wants to fight for my freedom that I failed to fight for and what she said it’s also true, if the lawyer had eyes he would have seen that Mr. William is not a lawyer”
  • Both Edward and Lucy gasped in surprise and I was instantly proud of my father. He has never replied back to them since he was born.
  • “Ah,ha! Now, you are answering back to your parents, you dare to side with that good for nothing daughter of yours”. Lucy glared at me with undiluted hatred.
  • She is now seeing me as the reason why her son was now rebelling and answering them in such a disrespectful manner and she could not hate me less.
  • "Dad! let them leave as there's nothing they can do for our family, we don't need people who are traitors to our family and don't appreciate the good things we have done for them," Stacey’s voice was filled with malice.
  • “Look how he is talking back at you after everything you did for him. So despicable”. Stacey filled in.
  • George and Richard regarded my father with unconcealed hatred. They despised him to the core because he was always the wise child among the three of them and he also had the most beautiful woman as a wife, even though she was from an unknown background, the way she carried herself was not comparable to ordinary people.
  • Because of his smartness, my dad's grandparents had doted on him and had wanted to leave the family fortune in his care.
  • They must be thanking God that would not be possible because their grandparents were dead and right now, my dad is leaving the family for good and any chance of him inheriting the family property is gone. The thought of him leaving must be giving them some consolation.
  • “We shall see how long you all last without my father in the company”. I said inwardly.
  • An elderly man in his fifties or sixties soon entered, smiling.
  • “Who the hell are you?” Edward Smith barked, obviously angry at the way things were not going according to plan.
  • “He is my lawyer, we can proceed with the contract”. I replied and Edward’s face darkened.
  • "Sandra, my girl, I hope I didn't arrive too late. I had a case in court, so I left it there and arrived as soon as I got your call," My lawyer smiled.
  • I just smiled at him and stated. “ No, you came at the right time to meet your subordinate behaving as if he owns the City A firm institute, nevertheless Mr. Enoch meet my lawyer Mr. Jack”, I paused and stared at Enoch in his eyes. I wanted to look into his eyes as I introduced my lawyer to him.
  • “I believe Mr Jack is your boss or am I wrong?”.
  • This startled everyone and it was apparent on their faces.
  • The Smith family could not hide their astonishment and their mouth hung open.
  • William looked impressed by me but I paid him no heed. When I settle with my family, we will have time to talk about his master.
  • "Sir, what are you doing here if you told me you knew her, I would have made her work easy and we would leave here soon?" Enoch asked arrogantly and I scoffed.
  • I was shocked at his stupidity but that was not my business, I just wanted to finish up what I had to do and leave.
  • My mother approached me and asked, "Honey, how did you know this man?" "Why he calls you so intimately as if he knows you so well?" I just stared at her and smiled.
  • “Of course he knows her so well, why else will he address her so intimately if she has not been warming his bed?” Stellah sneered.
  • I froze her with a look, “Enough Stellah, one more word from you and I will cut off your tongue”. I bit out.
  • Much to my satisfaction, I saw Stellah paled at my words, “She is so vulgar”. She said and grabbed her husband's arm.
  • “Do not fret sweetie, she is leaving this family soon”, Her husband said as he patted her arms
  • I ignored them and fixed my gaze on Enoch.
  • "Enoch, or whatever your name is”, I snapped, impatience lacing my tone.“I don't have a whole day so please let's get right to the point, I don't think there is anyone missing because we are all here."
