Chapter 5 A Gift
- Moreover, Juliet had some connection with Demi's mother. Out of respect for her late mother, she would treat Demi well.
- Demi could naturally sense that Juliet genuinely liked her. Her beautiful face immediately lit up with a sweet smile. She obediently sat down next to Juliet.
- "Juliet!"
- She looped her arm around Juliet's, her voice soft and sweet, coaxing Juliet into a joyful smile.
- Juliet looked at her with affection and asked, "Demi, are you happy now that Eric is back?"
- Demi nodded enthusiastically, her smile radiant. "Very happy!"
- Juliet nodded in satisfaction, her gaze shifting to Eric.
- "Eric, look how much Demi likes you! Now that you're back, what gift did you bring her?"
- "Nothing," Eric replied simply, without hesitation or delay.
- The smile on Juliet's face faltered, her brows knitting together in displeasure. "Eric, this isn't right. You and Demi are newlyweds. You insist on going overseas to expand the foreign markets, which I let slide, but after being gone for so long, you didn't think to bring her a gift to make her happy?"
- Eric's brow furrowed slightly, a clear sign of his growing impatience. Despite this, he had to endure Juliet's lecture quietly.
- Seeing him at a loss, Demi let out a barely perceptible smile. On the surface, she appeared to be defending him.
- "Juliet, don't be upset at him. Honey gave me a gift."
- "Oh?" Juliet looked at her in surprise and asked, "What did Eric give you, Demi?"
- Demi's eyes curled into a smile, her voice soft and sweet. Her manner was so endearing that it would make anyone want to cherish her.
- "Honey gave me a piece of paper with some words about ... divorce, or something like that."
- She paused, then playfully stuck out her tongue as if embarrassed.
- "I don't recognize the last two words."
- Sharp as ever, Juliet immediately caught on. Her smile vanished. She raised her cane and was ready to strike Eric.
- "I see you have outgrown me! How can you keep something like a divorce a secret from me?"
- Despite being older, Juliet still possessed sufficient strength to deliver a powerful blow. Fortunately, Eric was agile enough to dodge.
- "Grandma."
- He spoke helplessly and reasoned, "This marriage was hastily arranged without my knowledge. I'm just correcting that mistake."
- Juliet was so furious she smacked her cane on the ground, the sharp sound echoing as her anger flared.
- "This marriage was arranged by your elders! No matter what, you can't divorce!"
- Besides the connection between the Snows and Demi's mother, this marriage was decided by their families long ago. It couldn't just be undone.
- Besides, Demi wasn't born foolish; she became that way after hitting her head. Juliet was confident that modern medicine could cure her one day.
- "Juliet, don't fight. Did I say something wrong?"
- Demi gently shook Juliet's arm. She spoke softly, coaxing the old lady.
- "Juliet, don't be mad. Try this biscuit; it's really delicious!"
- Seeing how sweet and obedient Demi was, Juliet became even more dissatisfied with Eric. She looked up and glared at him.
- "If you dare to bring up divorce again, I'll break your legs!"
- Worried that Juliet might get too worked up and harm her health, Eric had no choice but to concede.
- "I understand."
- Juliet finally felt satisfied. She lovingly patted Demi's hand and said, "Alright, it's getting late. I'll head back now. Demi, come visit me at the estate sometime."
- Demi smiled sweetly, nodding obediently.
- "Okay, I love Juliet the most!"
- Juliet was thoroughly charmed. She got up to leave, but as her gaze fell on Eric, her face hardened once again.
- "Treat Demi better."
- Eric's frown deepened, but he had no choice but to reply, "Don't worry, Grandma. I understand."
- Satisfied with his response, Juliet left slowly.
- After seeing Juliet off, Eric narrowed his eyes. His cold gaze, tinged with suspicion, fell on Demi.
- He couldn't shake the feeling that this little fool had deliberately told Juliet about the divorce.
- Sensing his gaze, Demi blinked innocently. She was completely unfazed by his scrutiny. Demi continued to smile at him, her face sweet and naïve.
