Chapter 9 We Kill In The Mafia

  • Darian drove out of the garage, and hit the busy road, Lena stared out through the rearview mirror, the tiled road caught her attention, she wanted to talk to her husband but didn't know how to start. His eyes were on the road, and he didn't seem like he wanted to have a conversation with her. She wasn't sure how long she could keep up if he continued to have the cold and emotionless expression on his face.
  • She sighed and was forced to speak out, "I didn't know you are a member of a mafia," she let out, "I have read about them in books but never really had an encounter with one. What do you do in your Mafia?" She asked, patiently waiting for a response.
  • He tightened his hand on the steering wheel, and the car moved at an even higher speed, Lena mashed her lips together and wondered if she had done the wrong thing by asking him that question, but either way, she needed to know, he was her husband and she had to know some things about him.
  • "We kill people who don't mind their business," his harsh response got to her, he smirked, "Killing is what we do." He said and returned his eyes to the road.
  • Lena was mesmerized by how he could control the car even without looking at the road,
  • 'Did he just say they kill?' That statement registered in her mind. Of course, they commit crimes in the Mafia, what was she expecting?'
  • "You mean you just kill people?" She asked again.
  • Darian puffed his cheeks, he was getting tired from answering her questions, he didn't always talk much, and he wasn't careful with the few words he spat either.
  • "I just told you what we do," he intoned with no expression on his face. Lena shook her head, she knew she was in for it when she agreed to marry a dangerous man.
  • "There are no other businesses?" She asked with curiosity, she just wanted to know her husband more, and nothing more.
  • "Why do I feel you are an informant sent to know more about me?" He gazed down at her, Lena felt a pulse in her heart, she swallowed hard and stared away from him.
  • "You married me! I didn't even know you before you asked for my hand in marriage. So, what are you talking about?" She glared at him, but it was a wasteful one, he didn't glimpse her facial expression as she spoke to him.
  • "As a repayment of your father's debt," he reminded her.
  • "Was that why you married me?" She was disappointed he still had that notion of her, what was she expecting anyway?
  • "Why else would I marry you?" He turned to her, but she instantly abated his gaze before it rested on her.
  • "You married me because my father owes you, your family wanted you to get married because you need to mount the position of a don, capo, or whatever and you need heirs." She scoffed. "Crazy!" She held her hurting head, "Really, really crazy!" She folded her arms against her chest and wished she never agreed to marry him when her father pleaded with her too; he'd been nothing but horrible to her since they got married. It'd been just seven days, and she was tired already, she wanted to pull out of the marriage, she wasn't sure she could go any further with him.
  • "Watch your tongue, Lena. You don't speak about the Dawson family in that manner." He voiced out in a warning tone. "I will drop you off at home, and go to work, I have a lot to attend to, today. I have missed too much." He let out a weary sigh.
  • Lena looked at him, she didn't understand a thing about the man she married.
  • "You work too?" She had made a promise not to talk to him till he apologized for declaring he married her as a repayment for her father's debt, but her inquisitive nature would always fail her, she wanted to know everything possible.
  • "Yes, I do. I own two companies. You will get to know other things about me soon." He arrived in front of his mansion, and blasted the honk, the gate opened widely into two, he sped into the garage and parked the car.
  • "You should get down now, and go rest. Let me know if you need anything." His voice was soft now. Lena was confused, sometimes she wondered if he was bipolar, he was mean to her one minute, and the next minute he was acting all nice.
  • "I don't need anything," she said with a scowl on her face. "I know that you married me because my father owes you some money, but you don't always have to throw it at my face like that. We are all humans, and some of us are not as hard-heartened as you are. We have feelings, some words hurt us too." She told him what was on her mind, she always did that.
  • She held the handle of the car, and angrily unlocked it, she got out of the car and walked back into the house. She walked slowly expecting Darian to get out of the car, and probably say some words of apology to her.
  • To her chagrin, he got out of the car and changed into another red sports car after giving the car keys to Jay. He whispered some words to him before driving off.
  • Lena stared at the car as it left the house, and her heart sank. What was she expecting? That he would beg her? She scoffed and walked into the house. She should have known that Darian was a proud man, and he would never apologize to anyone. She was disappointed but there was nothing she could do.
  • Her phone beeped, and it was a reminder from Mayfield High School, cueing her to resume work on Monday. She smiled, working would make her occupied, and she wouldn't have to see Darian's face most of the time since he was always busy in his study whenever he was at home, and if she went to work, she would only see him at nights whenever he came to bed.
  • Her mind drifted to the dirty thoughts of why he never consummated their marriage, she suspected that he was sleeping with other women outside, that could be the case, she shrugged her shoulders since she didn't even know the kind of man he was.
  • "Good for him," she hissed as she walked into the living room, she sank onto the sofa and called Tina to serve her some water, she was too tired to go up to the room, "Thank you," she took the water from Tina with a smile. "I still have your clothes with me, I will return them to you when I go upstairs." She told her. Tina bobbed her head.
  • "What would you like to eat, ma'am?" She and Darian didn't have anything aside from coffee before leaving the house earlier and he didn't give her enough time to eat well at the family's house.
  • "What's available?" She asked Tina.
  • "Everything is available. We make five different meals every day. The boss tests all, and picks the one he wants to eat for the day." Tina told Lena.
  • "Wow! Five?" She wasn't shocked though, he was a psycho and that was the least of the things he could do. Lena thought of how stressful it must have been for Tina and Amy, her assistant. "What are the ones you made today?" She asked her.
  • Tina listed it all, and Lena scoffed. She didn't like any of the food. Who was the man she married? She still had to do more exploration about him.
  • "Just bring me some cookies," she said. " I will have that for now," she told Tina, and hurriedly, she left to bring cookies for Lena.
