Chapter 4 The Helpless One

  • Cousin Samuel Nixon, a well-known playboy in Marinopolis, was usually arrogant and unruly, leaving a trail of romantic debts throughout the city. Despite being a useless person, he was the first heir in line for the Nixon family. Amanda was unwilling; Samuel Nixon was nothing more than a dandy, utterly undeserving!
  • "Samuel, talk to Aunt Three and tell her about the chosen man—how handsome he is, how much money he has, and what background he comes from."
  • Ellie grabbed Samuel Nixon's hand, humble and sycophantic, not at all like an elder but more like a flatterer.
  • "Hehe, you'll know soon enough. The carefully selected candidate is truly exceptional, a one in a hundred."
  • There was a clear hint of sarcasm in Samuel Nixon's words.
  • Mother Ellie couldn't sense it, but Amanda understood perfectly.
  • This exceptional man was undoubtedly a worthless waste.
  • Once publicly revealed, Amanda was destined to become a joke in Marinopolis.
  • "Daughter, as I said, elders wouldn't harm you. I truly hope that my son-in-law will be an outstanding rich second-generation. Only then can he be worthy of my daughter."
  • Mother happily muttered to herself, but to Amanda's ears, it sounded ironic.
  • A tree that stands tall will inevitably attract the wind.
  • Despite her excellence, Amanda received no fair treatment within the family. Instead, she faced exclusion and cold treatment everywhere.
  • The elders of the Nixon family were afraid of her excellence, fearing that she might compete for the family fortune. Therefore, they made such a decision during old Nixon's critical illness.
  • This way, she posed no threat to other heirs.
  • Amanda, who saw through everything, felt powerless against the conspiracy and trickery.
  • "He's here, it's about to be announced."
  • Amid Samuel Nixon's cheers, Uncle Alfred Nixon, the head of the Nixon family, walked in with big strides.
  • Ellie took her daughter's hand, her expression full of excitement. In her heart, it seemed she had already decided that her future son-in-law would undoubtedly be an outstanding young man.
  • In contrast, Amanda's face was ashen.
  • Without guessing, she seemed to have already known the result.
  • Alfred Nixon walked onto the stage, holding a microphone, and cleared his throat.
  • "Next, I want to officially announce, after careful selection and with old Nixon's approval, we have chosen the most suitable young man from thousands of candidates. He is..."
  • "Ken!"
  • With several spotlights, everyone's attention focused on a man. Only then did they see the lucky one selected.
  • The whole audience erupted in cheers, and the guests couldn't help but applaud.
  • "Congratulations to the Nixon family for bringing in a son-in-law."
  • "Congratulations, congratulations."
  • In the compliments of the guests, Mother Ellie walked up with a smile on her face.
  • "Big brother, tell me about the background of the man you picked for my daughter. Is he rich, and what's his status?"
  • Alfred Nixon's lips curled up as he handed the information to his sister-in-law Ellie.
  • "Take a look for yourself."
  • "Ken is a veteran, worked in various odd jobs after retirement, a security guard... and now, surprisingly, he is unemployed."
  • The more Ellie read, the more baffled she became, and her smiling face gradually stiffened.
  • "Big brother, something must be wrong. This man is simply a useless waste."
  • Sure enough, Mother Ellie just found out.
  • Alfred Nixon justified himself, "No mistake. This is the Dragon-in-Law selected after careful consideration by old Nixon."
  • "It must be a mistake."
  • Ellie's face couldn't hide her dismay.
  • "Sister-in-law!"
  • Alfred Nixon's face turned stern as he said sharply, "Watch your identity. What qualifications do you have to challenge old Nixon's decision?"
  • "But this..."
  • Ellie's face turned purple, and no matter what, she couldn't accept her precious daughter marrying such a useless man.
  • Ellie finally realized what this so-called joyous occasion and old Nixon's decision were—a blatant humiliation.
  • "Hahaha..."
  • Samuel Nixon laughed heartily, clutching his stomach, pointing at Ken mockingly.
  • "I told you. He's the outstanding man we picked for you—a one in a hundred piece of trash. No job, no background, no money, no status. He's a three-nothing young man."
  • "Clap!"
  • Amanda slammed the table. "I won't marry. If you want to marry, marry him."
  • "You're overreacting."
  • Uncle sternly shouted, "If you dare to defy Grandpa's will, if you don't marry, you'll be removed from the Nixon family from now on. You will no longer be part of the Nixon family."
  • Amanda glared at her uncle with resentment. Just as she was about to speak, Mother Ellie hurriedly came over to dissuade her.
  • "Amanda, endure it for now. Don't act impulsively."
  • "Mom, they've gone too far. I can't bear it."
  • "What can you do if you can't bear it?" Cousin Samuel Nixon provocatively said, "Are you going to resist?"
  • "As long as you dare to say no, tomorrow, you'll be struck off the family tree. The Nixon family fortune will have nothing to do with you. You won't get a single penny."
  • "Daughter, calm down!" Ellie was still trying to persuade.
  • Amanda clenched her fists tightly, her nails almost digging into her flesh.
  • She was furious and wanted to resist, but Mother Ellie held her fists tightly, her eyes full of pleading.
