Chapter 2 Divine Retribution

  • Kayden was a figure of importance whom Elio had only ever seen in photographs before.
  • Kayden was more than just the owner of a real estate company. He also ran businesses in catering, insurance, and various other sectors. In Ackleton, he was quite the big shot.
  • The stunning beauty, who was dressed in a black uniform with silk stockings adorning her legs and likely in her mid-twenties, was none other than Raelynn Ryton, the daughter of Kayden. She was also the CEO of Ryton Estates Corporation.
  • At that very moment, she appeared disoriented, devoid of the commanding presence expected of a CEO.
  • In this car accident, the driver had died on the spot. Kayden was also seriously injured and was now lying on the stretcher. His breathing was clearly labored. He was inhaling more than he was exhaling.
  • Upon a single glance, Elio couldn't help but shake his head, for four words had already surfaced in his mind—slim chance of survival.
  • At that moment, the deputy director of the hospital, Aston Russell, received a notification. He hastily gathered his team and went out to meet them.
  • Upon seeing the extent of Kayden's injuries, Aston promptly began to speak.
  • “There's no hope left for Mr. Ryton. There's no need to rush him to the emergency room. Ms. Ryton, you should start preparing for your father's funeral.”
  • From his perspective, Kayden was beyond saving. If he were to die in their hospital, it would be a major issue.
  • Upon hearing these words, Raelynn was unable to contain her anger.
  • “What? How can that be? Dr. Russell, you're giving up on my father just after one look? No, you must rush my dad into the emergency room immediately, or else I won't let your hospital off the hook!”
  • Aston grimaced, but he knew that the woman before him was no ordinary character.
  • Seeing the situation take a turn for the worse, the nearby surgical department head, Gordon Simmons, quickly stepped in to mediate.
  • “Ms. Ryton, please calm down. This is Dr. Russell, the deputy director of our hospital. He has been practicing medicine for thirty-five years and is our best surgeon. If he says there's no hope, then there must be no hope.”
  • “No, you have to save my dad! My dad can't die!” Raelynn was on the verge of losing her sanity, clutching onto Aston's clothing. “Dr. Russell, I know you're a person of authority. But could you consider all the charitable work my father has done and the numerous medical equipment he has donated to your hospital and save him even if there's the slightest hope?”
  • At this point, Raelynn was already shedding tears.
  • Elio had initially intended to leave, but upon hearing this, he couldn't help but halt in his tracks.
  • Kayden was a philanthropist, frequently donating money and goods to impoverished areas. He could be considered a good person.
  • Elio decided to go over and see if he could save him.
  • Before he even had a chance to speak, Aston, overcome by pressure, yielded to Raelynn's plea. “Ms. Ryton, given your unwavering devotion to your father, I've decided to do my utmost to save him!”
  • “Thank you, Dr. Russell!”
  • Raelynn kept bowing to Aston.
  • Shortly after, Kayden was rushed into the emergency room, with Aston and a team of assistants following closely behind.
  • Elio stood silently at the entrance of the emergency room, waiting patiently.
  • Fifteen minutes had passed when the doors to the emergency room swung open.
  • Raelynn hurried forward, only to see Aston emerge with a face full of shame.
  • “Ms. Ryton, I'm sorry. We've done our best!”
  • Raelynn nearly fainted on the spot.
  • Kayden was wheeled out on a stretcher, his body covered with a white cloth.
  • The implication was clear. She could proceed with the funeral now.
  • “Dad...”
  • Raelynn clung onto the stretcher, her tears falling relentlessly.
  • “Ms. Ryton, once a life is lost, it can't be brought back. Please accept my condolences. Even Dr. Russell couldn't save Mr. Ryton's life. This only goes to show how severe your father's injuries were.”
  • Gordon stepped forward to offer comfort while also seizing the opportunity to flatter Aston.
  • “Push him out,” Gordon said to the orderlies.
  • Just as the orderlies were about to wheel the stretcher away, a youthful voice echoed through the air at that moment.
  • “Wait a minute! To regard living individuals as deceased is an offense that invites divine retribution!”
  • His words descended like an unexpected thunderbolt, rendering the room silent and everyone within it momentarily stunned.
  • What?
  • He's still alive?
  • All eyes turned in unison toward a certain direction, where they saw Elio making his way toward them.
  • A hint of confusion hung on Aston's face. Which department does this doctor belong to, and why can't I recall any memory of him?
  • “You b*stard, what nonsense are you spouting? Mr. Ryton has already passed away. Don't cause a scene here! Security, get him out of here!” Gordon couldn't help but want to tear Elio to pieces.
  • Having successfully evaded the issue, he was caught off guard when someone lacking a broader perspective unexpectedly reintroduced it to him.
  • Raelynn, on the other hand, saw a glimmer of hope. She rushed to Elio's side and said with fervor, “Can you save my father? If you can save him, you can have anything you want!”
  • Anything?
  • Elio glanced at the woman's alluring figure and her attractive legs clad in black stockings, momentarily lost in a whirl of thoughts.
  • However, focusing on the matter at hand, he solemnly nodded and assured, “Don't worry. I'm confident that I can save him.”
  • No sooner had Elio finished speaking than Gordon snapped angrily, “That's impossible! The EKG shows that Mr. Ryton's heartbeat has stopped. There's no way he could still be alive!”
  • Elio glanced at Gordon and said, “I don't want to explain anything right now. From your perspective, he's already dead. So, what's the harm in letting me try? What if a miracle happens?”
  • Everyone exchanged glances.
  • Aston didn't know who Elio was, but he thought Elio's words made a lot of sense. He decided to give it a shot, treating it like a last-ditch effort. After all, miracles could happen.
  • He quickly ordered, “Since this young man wishes to give it a shot, let him! Gordon, ensure your team works closely with him!”
  • “But Dr. Russell, Mr. Ryton has—”
  • “This is my order!”
  • “All right, then,” Gordon said, a hint of resentment in his voice.
  • Elio nodded and said, “Send Mr. Ryton to the emergency room right now!”
  • “Do as he says!” Aston hastily instructed.
  • And so, everyone hurriedly rushed Kayden to the emergency room.
  • Elio was the first to enter, followed closely by Gordon and the nurses.
  • The main door slammed shut.
  • Kayden was carried onto the operating table. Elio was just about to utilize the medical techniques passed down to him to save him when he abruptly realized he didn't have a silver needle at hand.
  • At this point, it was too late to fetch the silver needle. The patient wouldn't hold on until then.
  • Left with no other choice, Elio rummaged through his toolbox for a suitable replacement.
  • Gordon's eyes widened as he noticed Elio extracting a nail from his toolbox.
  • A second look revealed an assortment of tools, including wrenches and pliers.
  • Gordon finally sensed something was amiss. “Young man, if I may ask, where did you practice medicine before?”
  • Elio traced a few spots on Kayden's body with the nail and answered casually, “Oh, I'm not a doctor. Actually, I'm a maintenance worker at Ryton Estates Corporation...”
