- The air grew colder as the pair trekked further into the mountains, the trees thinning as they climbed higher. The path had become more treacherous, the steep slopes dotted with jagged rocks and treacherous ravines. Every step seemed to pull them deeper into the unknown.
- Ariella had never felt so small. The vastness of the mountain range, coupled with the oppressive silence that surrounded them, made her feel as though they were the last two people left in the world. The only sounds were the crunch of their boots on the frost-covered ground and the distant call of birds.
- Kael led the way with confidence, his steps sure and steady despite the difficult terrain. His silence hadn’t lessened, though. If anything, it had grown heavier. The few times she tried to engage him in conversation, he responded only with short, curt answers.
