- The door stood between us and whatever nightmare Andre had dragged into Isabelle’s life. Her entire body was trembling now, her fingers clutched so tightly around my wrist that it hurt. I could see the panic in her eyes—wild, unfocused, desperate.
- "Isabelle, please," Andre’s voice came again, muffled but firm. "We need to talk. Now."
- She shook her head, her breaths ragged. "No, no, I can't. I can't do this."
