Chapter 4 The New Co Founder
- As I stared at Suzy, the shock started to become evident on my face. I just couldn't wrap my head around what I was seeing before me.
- My very own sister, working for the PIA.
- Right until this moment, I had no idea the Paranormal Intelligence Agency even existed. It all seemed like a lucid dream.
- And I was a co-founder?
- Who was this Verity Adams anyway, and what other dangerous things did she involve herself in?
- I couldn't imagine that hunting ghosts, vampires, and werewolves was an easy job. Did they even exist?
- And the man I was supposedly married to was the founder of this organization. It really felt like a dream. Or maybe I was being pranked?
- Maybe somebody would walk in and tell me everything was just a joke, that they had somehow found a way to alter my appearance and paid everyone here to pretend like they all didn't know what was going on?
- I tried not to scoff at how ridiculous and far-fetched that idea seemed. I knew it was impossible. This was real. I –who was once June Kim– was now this Verity Adams.
- I didn't know how this whole thing was possible but I didn't want to look out of place. I didn't want to arouse suspicion about the real issue I was facing.
- "You're always late," Tyler said and I realized I had been lost in thoughts since.
- From beside me, I heard Suzy scoff. "Well you don't know what I have going on at home, do you?"
- Her tone of voice sounded really familiar like she had known these people for ages. I couldn't help but wonder if all those times I'd spent being June Kim if Suzy had always been a PIA agent.
- "Tell me, Suzy." Tyler chuckled lightly. "I really want to know what you have going on at home."
- Suzy rolled her eyes. "Is this what you called me for? To interrogate and question my lateness?"
- Wow. She really was my sister, even if she looked different and more elevated, she was my sister.
- "Enough you guys." Wayan gruffly ordered, cutting out their little back-and-forth drab. "Tyler, tell us about this attack plan that you have."
- Tyler nodded his head, suddenly looking so seriously like he hadn't been joking just a few seconds ago. "Right. So Reece and I took into consideration how tight-knit the Grey pack members actually are, thereby making our job difficult."
- Wayan nodded his understanding to whatever Tyler had just said and I pretended to understand.
- Tyler continued. "So taking that into consideration, we've determined that the best way to go about this is to infiltrate the pack."
- I stared at him, looking very confused. Hadn't he just said the so-called Grey pack was a really tight knick group of people, wouldn't infiltrating them be extremely hard?
- I could tell Wayan was thinking about the same thing because his brows furrowed as he stared at Tyler.
- But Tyler let out a small smirk that confirmed to us that he wasn't done explaining his plan.
- "And how can we do that, you may ask?" He paused for dramatic effect. "Instead of infiltrating the pack as a whole –since that would prove a real difficult task– we infiltrate the heart of one of their members."
- "One of their members?" Suzy asked with a raised eyebrow.
- "Exactly. And it has to be someone of high rank. One of us has to become close to somebody from the pack, worm our way into their heart enough that they lose their guard around us," Tyler said.
- His plan was sensible, I had to admit.
- Since infiltrating the pack seemed difficult, getting a high-ranking member of the pack to trust you felt like the most reliable way to go about things.
- "Somebody of high rank..." Wayan drawled. He had his hand on his chin as if in deep thought. "Somebody like the Alpha of their pack?"
- "Exactly. The Alpha really is the only one we can meet anyway. He has a company, we could just pretend to want to work there." Tyler explained.
- I could sense the excitement in his voice as he explained the plan. He seemed happy to work here.
- The room grew silent as everyone took the time to let Tyler's plan sink in.
- I looked at my sister, –who technically was my sister, but also wasn't my sister– and saw the look she had on her face. Tyler had said we needed someone from here to become close to the Alpha of the Grey pack and obviously this all seemed like a dangerous job.
- I didn't know what Suzy was capable of in this new world I was seeing her in, but I knew I had to protect her. I didn't want her taking on dangerous missions and by the look on her face, it was clear she was ready to do anything she could to make the PIA proud.
- And so I did the one thing that I knew was going to make sure she stayed out of danger, and not arouse suspicion.
- "I'll do it," I said boldly, making everyone turn around to look at me.
- Wayan had the most unease on his face as they all stared at me. I didn't blame him, Verity Adams was his wife after all.
- "How hard could it be? I'll get close to this Alpha guy and get information from him." I hoped this was how Verity talked. I hoped I wasn't drawing suspicion to myself. I hoped I was acting normal in their eyes.
- This time, Reece who had been quiet the entire time finally spoke.
- "Are you sure this is a good idea? Letting her back in the field? I mean, yes, we all know what Verity is capable of, but this isn't really the Verity we all know. She needs time to get familiar with the PIA activities once again before she can be let back into the field and sent on missions."
- He didn't have to mention Wayan's name, I automatically knew the question was directed to Verity's husband.
- Tyler shook his head as he stared at Reece.
- "I think it's genius actually. How else would she regain her memories back if not by doing the things she used to do before she lost those memories? We can actually help her out by sending her on even more missions."
- All I did was stare in confusion as they bickered back and forth.
- I had absolutely no idea what they were even going on about, but I tried not to show it.
- If Verity Adams was the co-founder of this organization, then she definitely engaged in dangerous activities. I had to make them all buy my act and drive away any form of suspicion in their mind. Hence, why I had offered to take this mission, I just didn't know it was going to cause a whole debacle.
- Wayan walked up to me and took my hand, pulling me to the side and away from the others. He took in a deep breath as if preparing himself for the conversation we were about to have.
- "I trust you, Verity, I really do. But I think Reece is right. You should sit this one out until you get your memories back," Wayan said calmly.
- I shook my head and looked him in the eye. "But what if Tyler is right? What if going out to do this helps make me regain my memories faster?" I asked exactly what I knew he wanted to hear.
- I was pretty sure he was worried about Verity, his wife –which was also me. But I knew the prospect of Verity regaining her memories back was something he wanted to happen.
- I had to do this also, for my sister.
- "Come on. You know Tyler is right." I pressed. "Being around people and doing things I used to do will make this easier. I'll get an idea of what my life was like before the accident and before we know it, I'm back to normal." I really hoped he was buying the idea.
- Wayan still looked unsure, he furrowed his eyebrows as he stared at me.
- I sighed, noticing that Suzy was also staring at us. It was weird, really. It felt weird to stand here and watch her and not even be able to act like June around her.
- "I'll be careful, I promise." I sighed, trying to get Suzy off my mind.
- I knew that eventually I was going to have to do further investigation into my sister's activities, and I would have to do it without being suspicious.
- I could tell the moment Wayan finally relented. He nodded and squeezed my hand tighter. "Just make sure you're careful, Verity, please," He said.
- I nodded, just to douse his mind from worry.
- We walked back to the others and I noticed how everyone immediately turned to Wayan, waiting patiently on his final decisions.
- I didn't even have any time to second-guess my decisions, because once Wayan turned to Tyler and the rest to give them a nod of affirmation, I knew it was decided.
- I was going to worm my way into the Grey pack Alpha's life.
