• “Roxanne, darling,” Oscar called after her when she tried to get as far as she could from Brandy’s gaze. Her grandfather wasn’t far behind, weaving through the crowd to grasp her by the bicep, looking at her intently. “Are you all right? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
• Heavy, stomping footsteps up above, a door opening on old hinges and slamming shut. Every hair on her forearms and the back of her neck stood, pulling her towards the sound of sunflowers leaning towards the sun.
• “I’m okay.” She swallowed, giving him a nod that she hoped came across as enthusiastic. “Just-big day. Lots of feelings.”
