Chapter 2 That Time I Made An Absurd Proposal To A Breathtaking Man
- Elizabeth.
- I walk into Torrington's cooperation with my head high, heels clicking, and a plan for revenge in mind.
- From a perspective, my plan was a shotgun story. A foolish idea that might get me killed by the said person.
- From another, if my plans were to work, I would have myself the perfect plot for revenge.
- Stopping at the receptionist's corner, I forced a warm smile. “Good morning, I am here to see Chairman Torrington.”
- She raised her head, fingers still typing on the keyboard. “Do you have an appointment?”
- This was the difficult part. It was one thing to dream of executing a plan that involved the man, and it was another difficult feat to get access to the man.
- “No.” My tone was confident. “But if you could ring him up for me please.”
- The receptionist shook her head and released a sigh. “You cannot see him without an appointment.”
- “I am well aware but it is an urgent matter and…”
- “Chairman Torrington is a busy man and he surely is not interested in meeting nobodies that have come here to throw themselves at him.”
- “What the…” Okay, I was here to throw myself at him but she didn't have to downgrade me like that. “I have no idea where you got that…”
- “If you do not leave, I will call security.”
- I could see my whole plan fading away. Once again, I felt paralyzed and helpless. The feeling that washed over me in my last moments was quick to resurface. I could see the images of my husband and sister, smug and content after making sure I met my end.
- “Can you at least please…” She picked up the telephone and began to dial. “Fine! I am leaving.”
- No sooner had I turned around when I heard someone call in an unsure tone. “Miss Darby?”
- I turned around immediately and was faced with a tall man holding a coffee in one hand and his phone in the other. “Yes.”
- “Good to see you here.” I gave him a confused expression when he placed his phone in his jacket and offered his hand. “John Farmer, personal assistant to Chairman Torrington. We met three years ago.”
- “Oh..oh I am sorry. Forgive my manners.”
- “What are you doing here?”
- “Ummm…” I couldn't really say I was here to seduce his boss, could I? “I was passing by and thought to say hi.”
- “Why then were you leaving?”
- “Oh…I was threatened with security since I didn't have an appointment.” I adjusted my dress and glanced at the receptionist who now looked very confused and scared.
- “I see.” He walked towards her, said a few words and I watched the color drain off her face. “Right now!”
- “Sir…”
- He quickly turned to me with a polite smile. “Miss Darby, please, I will take you to the chairman.”
- “Thank you.”
- All of a sudden, I was feeling extra lucky. The elevator ride was smooth and filled with silence and once we got to the top floor, I decided to ask as we maneuvered the way.
- “How did you recognize me?”
- “Ahh..the boss is always mentioning…” he paused and I faltered in my steps while he seemed to collect himself. “...that shade of hair. It is unique.”
- I touched my hair suddenly aware of its ginger color. “True.”
- Stopping at a huge office door, he gave a tiny smile. “The chairman is right inside.”
- “Thank you once again, Mr Farmer.”
- He was gone as quickly as he came and being alone made me quite nervous. I rubbed my palm against my dress, summoned a little courage, and turned the knob.
- The view I met was not something Mr Framer had prepared me for. A group of elderly-looking men sat at a table, papers designed all over it, their expressions were grim and sour as they focused on the man seated at the center of the table.
- All eyes turned to me and I almost fell back outside. My breathing heavy, hands sweaty, I met the gaze of Chairman Torrington.
- Nikolas Torrington in the flesh and blood.
- Three years ago, I first met the man and was amazed by how beautifully God could have created a man. Right now, he stole my breath away.
- His eyes, blue and icy, stared into mine with a flash of surprises before it was masked with something that resembled relief. His face was a marvel to look at with the Roman nose and full lips. Diamond-cutting jaw and cheekbones I was dying to kiss again.
- “Directors…you are dismissed.” his voice vibrated through the room and I took a deep breath at the sound of it.
- Hurriedly, everyone got on their feet and packed their documents quickly scurrying to the door as if they had just been saved.
- Once alone, Nikolas took off his glasses, removed his cufflinks, and slowly rolled the sleeves of his shirt to his elbow.
- Beautiful ink appeared reminding me of the one thing that had ruined that amazing night three years ago.
- The action alone was erotic and it made me press my thighs together. I tried to remain confident but surly my face was flushed by now.
- Images flashed through my memory. Obscene sounds made me bite my lower lip and internally groan. How…in the world had I not been able to compose myself after three years?
- He stood from his seat and walked towards me, putting a good five feet between us. His cologne assaulted my nose and I almost forgot how to breathe.
- Masculine and minty. Of pine wood and crispy new money. A man like him exuded power and wealth.
- To think I actually came here with the intention to do such a thing, I couldn't feel more stupid at this point.
- “Elizabeth.” His voice was warm and silky. Just as I remembered. As if he was cooing and trying to soothe my nerves. “Lovely to see you again.”
- “Hi.” I croaked out and hurriedly cleared my throat. “Sorry to suddenly barge in like that Chairman Torrington. Mr Framer said it was okay and I didn't think to knock which was…”
- He closed the space between us, his six-foot-four entity towering over my five-feet-six figure. Nikolas placed his hands on my shoulders and gave me a faint smile. Once that softly made me swoon. “Breath Elizabeth.”
- His touch was familiar. I was living my second life and his touch still felt fucking familiar, like it was just yesterday he last had me writhing under him.
- I took in a deep breath and inhaled his scent. Taking a step back, a polite smile plastered itself on my face. “Sorry, I was ranting off.”
- “A trait I am happy you still have. To what do I owe this visit Elizabeth?”
- Fuck! The way he calls my name. Like silk wrapped around sin.
- “I was passing by and…” he raised a thick brow and lifted his lips in a smirk. “I…I am actually here with a proposal.”
- He looked intrigued, blue eyes dancing across my face, resting on my lips for some second before drifting back to my eyes. “What proposal?”
- “A marriage proposal.” I confidently replied. “I want you to marry me, Chairman Torrington.”
