- "Please! Give me two of those skewers," Cateline's mother asks for some meat for them to eat. It was one of the most expensive things to buy, after all, it required raising or hunting, both of which were complicated, especially for a family consisting only of women.
- They raised cows but had no experience with butchering. They usually ask the neighbor to do it once or twice a year, giving him part of the meat and preserving the rest by salting or cooking it in fat to avoid spoilage. Fresh meat was a rare treat for them.
