Chapter 6 Barbarian?

  • The Bensons held significant influence in the region.
  • This time, it was Magnus Benson, the second son of the family, marrying Daphne. His intellect was akin to that of an 8-year-old.
  • Magnus, however, had suffered a severe brain injury in a car accident years ago and had yet to fully recover.
  • The Lewis Group had recently engaged in discussions with the Bensons regarding a project. In hopes of turning their fortunes around, the Bensons arranged for Daphne to marry Magnus.
  • Carsen Lewis readily agreed, seeing Daphne's marriage to the Bensons as a means to improve relations between the two families.
  • "Get lost! You're not welcome here!" Daphne spat with disgust upon seeing Hugo's smug face.
  • "Daphne, don't forget! This house belongs to Grandpa.
  • "If you drove him mad, you might find yourself homeless. Don't push your luck," Hugo retorted sharply.
  • "So what if Magnus isn't mentally sound? Being chosen by the Bensons is a stroke of luck you should appreciate!
  • "Remember, you have a tarnished reputation due to past incidents. Don't feign innocence."
  • Hugo cruelly reminded her, bringing up her past and taunting her. "Because of you, our family has endured criticism and losses.
  • "But your family remains ungrateful. You still act superior here. Hurry up and sign the documents. I don't have time for this," he added.
  • Then he tossed the papers at Daphne's face.
  • "F*ck off!"
  • Maxwell struggled to contain his rage.
  • "Who are you to order me to leave? Do you even know who I am?"
  • Hugo tried to brag, but Maxwell grabbed him by the neck and lifted him off the ground.
  • "Maxwell, let go," Daphne interjected urgently.
  • Though she harboured resentment towards the Lewis for their coercion, she found Maxwell's inclination towards violence too extreme. He was always on the verge of killing someone.
  • "Maxwell?"
  • Hugo's surprise was palpable upon hearing the name. Wasn't this the man who assaulted Daphne years ago?
  • Wasn't he supposed to be deceased?
  • With a swift motion, Maxwell flung Hugo onto the front windshield of the Mercedes, leaving him groaning in pain.
  • "Daddy is so strong! He's a superhero!"
  • Tahlia cheered with delight. Hugo had tormented her family for far too long; it was about time Maxwell taught him a lesson.
  • Examining the damaged windshield, Hugo's expression darkened.
  • "Screw you! This car is brand new. You'll pay for this!
  • Though Hugo desired to unleash a torrent of curses, the intense gaze from Maxwell silenced him.
  • "If you dare show your face again, I'll break your leg," Maxwell warned calmly, his gaze unwavering.
  • Hugo swallowed nervously. How could Maxwell exude such a commanding presence?
  • If he had known Maxwell was returning, he would have brought reinforcements.
  • No wonder Daphne had refused to marry Magnus; it appeared her rejection stemmed from Maxwell's return.
  • Determined to inform Carsen of the situation promptly, Hugo shot a furious glare at Daphne before driving off.
  • "Alright! Just you wait! I'll make you pay!"
  • Gathering the scattered documents, Maxwell crumpled them and tossed them into the trash. Turning to the Lewis family, he declared, "Since this house belongs to the Lewis, you should move away. I have my own residence."
  • "Aren't you supposed to leave? Your pity isn't needed here," Daphne retorted with disdain, glaring at Maxwell.
  • Maxwell's penchant for violence made him a thug in Daphne's eyes, an individual who was always willing to resort to force.
  • Maxwell's behaviour left Daphne bewildered. First, he confronted Ged, and now Hugo. Was he incapable of civilized conversation?
  • "Don't fret about finances. I've got it covered," Maxwell assured.
  • He retrieved a bank card from his wallet.
  • It bore a unique dragon engraving, unlike any common card on the market.
  • "In this account, there's a balance of 3 billion with an unlimited overdraft," Maxwell declared confidently.
  • Three billion?
  • An unlimited overdraft?
  • Samantha and Jose were shocked.
  • Could this be genuine?
  • Or is he merely boasting?
  • "Can those dollars turn the clock?
  • "Can it undo the past insults and ridicule I've endured?" Daphne questioned skeptically, her tone deliberate.
  • "I don't wish to see you. Should you dare disrupt my family again, there will be consequences," she warned sternly, her disbelief evident in her words.
  • Daphne spoke word by word and remained unconvinced by Maxwell's claims.
  • Three billion?
  • Even if the wealth were real, what relevance did it hold for her?
  • She could have married a rich man if she was after wealth and there was no need to wait up.
  • Daphne wanted to live on her own terms, relying solely on herself.
  • Bang!
  • She slammed the door shut.
  • From inside came Tahlia's voice, "Dad."
  • Maxwell's heart tightened at the sound of his daughter's voice. He responded, "Cupcake!"
  • "This man isn't your father. Your father has died," Daphne asserted, pulling Tahlia back into the living room.
  • Standing at the entrance, Maxwell pondered his next move.
  • "John, investigate the Bensons and Daphne's social connections. She may have plans to leave," Maxwell instructed.
  • Offering her a billion-dollar villa would likely be futile; he needed an alternative approach.
  • "Understood," John acknowledged.
  • Lewis estate.
  • Carsen, Daphne's grandfather, flew into a rage upon hearing Hugo's words. He smashed several cups in frustration.
  • "This is intolerable. Daphne has returned with that rogue. Reclaim the house immediately," he commanded, seething.
  • "And dismiss Daphne tomorrow. She'll come crawling back to me, mark my words."
