- Avery jolted awake from her stupor, a scream caught in her throat and reduced to a broken, hoarse whisper, while her head pounded as if it might split apart. She forced her eyes open, only to be met by a blur of darkness—her vision already obscured by a blindfold.
- The air was thick with a musty, decaying odor, and a nauseating, fishy stench filled her nostrils. With a coarse rag stuffed in her mouth that made each breath a struggle, all she could manage were muffled whimpers.
