Chapter 8 Said
- JAX’S POV.
- Fear gripped me the second I saw Evie sitting there with Aurora standing opposite her. She had this serious look on her face. The one that screamed that something was going on.
- But what?.
- I wondered.
- “Outside now!.” I ordered and stormed out of the room, slamming the door hard behind me as though it had wronged me instead.
- I tried to keep my cool but ended up pacing up and down the open space. I sent her a glare the second she stepped out of the room.
- I stormed over to her, grabbed her right arm and pulled her along with me until we got somewhere safe and far away from Aurora’s hearing length.
- I finally let go of her arm.
- “Why are you here?.” I questioned. I was angry, pissed and short of words that the she-wolf I had cut contact with months ago was in my office, worse still, conversing with Aurora.
- Only heavens knew what she must have told her.
- “I….I…You weren’t picking up your calls so I just thought of coming over to…umm…say hi.” She responded, her voice quivering because she was scared of me, of what I could do to her.
- “And what part of I don’t ever what to see your face again, don’t you understand?.” I questioned, my voice pitched a bit high.
- “I’m sorry. I just wanted to see you. I missed you, Jax, and I am sure you feel like I do.” She said, and I let out a soft gaggle.
- “Are you serious right now?.” I asked in disbelief. “Like, can you hear yourself right now? You sound so hilarious that you would fit in a stand-up comedy.” I scorned.
- She said nothing for a while, and I could see her eyes tearing up.
- What was it with she-wolves and running eyes? What was it with them and their weak eyes? Always crying over every single thing. Every damn thing.
- I wasn’t moved. I wasn't moved to say sorry to her or try to stop her from crying because she had caused all this for herself the second she let herself fall in love with me. I had warned her, told her that I don’t do love. That I never believed in love and never will, and she had agreed. She had agreed to be one of my fuck mates until she….
- I dragged in a shaky breath at the thought of it.
- “You have to leave,” I told her.
- I couldn’t afford Aurora or people seeing her here with me. I couldn’t afford any more misunderstanding.
- “Hey!.” I yelled when she didn’t say a word or react to what I said.
- “I’m sorry.” She said, sobbing softly. The tears ran down her cheeks. She stepped closer and tried to touch me, but instead, I moved backwards to avoid that. I didn’t want to give her any false hope. I didn’t want him to believe that she still had a chance. That was why I had stopped calling, texting or seeing her the second I found out that she loved me.
- But I still wasn’t moved. I didn’t care. I didn’t want to. Because, in the end, nothing else mattered. In the end, not even love would be able to save anyone that I knew firsthand.
- “Leave and don’t show up here again!.” I ordered and walked out of her sight before she could say anything. I didn’t bother to look behind me to check if she had left or didn’t
- I headed to my office and exhaled deeply before twisting the knob and pushing the door open. Thought of words to say to her ran through my mind, and in the end, I concluded to say nothing but the truth.
- “Where’s Evie?.” She asked with a curious look on her face, and I immediately knew that she wanted answers.
- Well, here goes nothing.
- “She left,” I responded, not telling her the truth. This was still the truth, though.
- Her gaze held mine for a while.
- “On her own will.” She asked, and I ran my right finger through my hair before replying.
- What was I to say?
- “No. I asked her to leave.” I replied truthfully and watched her pout her lips, nodding slightly as she rolled the seat around.
- “Nice!.” She exclaimed softly. “So that was your girlfriend. Too bad I never heard anything about her.” She said and tuts.
- So that was it. That was what she said. That was what she called us.
- Lovers!.
- That was weird.
- “She is not my girlfriend,” I replied and watched her laugh.
- She was quiet for a long time.
- What was going on in her head?
- I wondered.
- “Nice!.” She responded again and sent me a smile. One to tell me that all was fine even though I knew it wasn’t.
- She wasn’t the type to not ask questions, so something was wrong.
- “Are you okay?.” I asked, and she nodded her head in response.
- “Yea. I’m perfectly fine.” She replied.
- That was the word. The one she used whenever she was so pissed, yet she wasn’t ready to say a word about it.
- But what I refused to understand was why she would be angry.
- Or did Evie say anything more?
- “So, how’s the work thing?.” She asked, now diverting the topic.
- “Fine. We have three vacant spaces available, so all you have to do is to choose one.” I explained.
- I was happy, glad to finally get to do something for her. Finally, get to help her.
- “Oh, nice!.” She exclaimed, and I raised my brows, wanting to ask so many questions, but instead.
- “We should get going,” I said.
