Chapter 2 Poison

  • AURORA’S POV.
  • " You're fired!." The managing Director thundered, and all I could think of was where I had gone wrong.
  • I couldn't think of anything I might have done to warrant this sudden job termination. It made no sense, and you can't wake up one morning and decide to fire your workers; it just isn't done that way.
  • " Sir! With all due respect. I don't think you've told me my crime or why I deserve punishment as huge as this." I glared at the wolf who, in his little narrow mind, thought he ruled the world.
  • " How dare you question me? You're fired!." He roared.
  • I laughed. " I don't think everything is alright with you, sir. You can't fire someone you've already fired." I mocked.
  • No!. It wasn't an offense or a crime I committed. My job was terminated because of human greed and wickedness.
  • My mind flashed back to the incident a month before my release.
  • My M.D. had called me into his office to have a "discussion" with me. He talked about how he had a nephew that needed a job after years of unemployment with a good certificate that would kick most of us out of our jobs.
  • Of course, I wondered what that had to do with me. As the financial manager, I had good grades, and the pay was nice. At one point, I thought he wanted me to tell him how I had gotten my job with grades like mine, but that wasn't the case.
  • He wanted to fire me for his goddamn nephew, and I could only keep my job if I slept with him. The shock made me paralyzed for some seconds before hot rage began to flow through my veins.
  • The nerve of the man! Has he no shame?
  • He wanted to sleep with someone his daughter's age, if he had any, to give his nephew a job.
  • It took all the restraint in me not to punch his crooked nose. I refused his offer, insulted him six ways to Sunday, then walked out of his office as he hurled insults at me.
  • As the flashback ended, I glared at the ugly older adult in front of me before walking back to my office to pack my stuff.
  • As I walked out of the company, I suddenly remembered something. I dropped my box on the receptionist's desk and returned to the hallway, whispers floating in the air.
  • " What are you still doing here, you whore?." He said in disgust.
  • And that was how my final restraint snapped.
  • " I forgot something." I snapped angrily.
  • I walked up to him closely and slapped him with every pent-up anger and rage that his lip busted, his glasses flew to the other side of the room, and he staggered a bit.
  • " And that is for messing with me," I smirked and walked out of the firm.
  • I dropped my box on the passenger seat and drove home
  • When I got home, I went into the bathroom, took a shower, changed into a light top and bum shorts, then put on the air conditioner and curled up under my duvet, talking to my wolf.
  • " I like what you did back there, Aurora. Although, it would have been more acceptable if a little extra blood was shed. The old donkey was getting on my nerves." My wolf, Alaya, growled.
  • " Well, what do we do now? We don't have a job." She said sadly.
  • I had not thought he would go that far.
  • " But we have a house and a car and a best friend who loves us," I responded.
  • A smile made it to my lips as I thought of Jax Conrad, my best friend and first love from seventh grade. I watched him grow into a handsome young man. I watched how girls flocked after him. I watched him use and dump them...... He is a typical playboy, and I also know of his immense hatred for werewolves, which I happen to be. Nothing he did scare me, but his hatred for my kind was the deal breaker.
  • I don't want to imagine his face when he discovers what I am.
  • " Don't be heartbroken, Aurora. If he is meant to be with us, he'll love us for who we are." Alaya said sadly.
  • She is also hurt because we can never be with him, at least not how we want.
  • " I want to see him." I said out loud as I jumped from my bed, " I need to see him; I'm sure he can help us with our current situation." I said hopefully.
  • " I hope you are not thinking what I think you are thinking." She said.
  • " What might that be?." I paused and stared at myself in the mirror.
  • What could she possibly be talking about?
  • " We can't work with him in the same place." She screamed in my head, " That's the first reason we refused to work for him in the first place." She reminded.
  • Ouch!.
  • Jax was the CEO of a million-dollar company, and yet I was working as the Financial manager of a little wager law firm.
  • Damn, my love life.
  • " He'll work something out," I assured him as I pulled out a blue sunflower dress and drove to my best friend's home.
  • I already drove into his mansion before remembering that today was a Friday and that he would be out clubbing with the guys.
  • All is well and good. I'll sleep here till he arrives.
  • I thought.
  • I walked in, only to see Jax sitting on the floor, shivering like a child.
  • " Jax!." I called out and quickly rushed over to him. " Jax, are you okay?." I brushed his hair away from his face. His beautiful eyes were deep red, and he was covered in sweat.
  • " A...Aurora" He called my name in a whisper " You're here?." He said, fear evident in his voice.
  • " Of course I am. What the hell happened to you? Did you get into a fight? Are you hurt?." I questioned.
  • My blood boiled at the thought of someone hurting him. If there were, I would snap all bones out of the culprit’s body.
  • He shook his head.
  • " It's none of those things." He grabbed my waist, burying his face in my stomach.
  • Then what was it?
  • " Then tell me." I stroked his hair lovingly, trying to calm him down. " What happened, Jax?." I asked.
  • He looked up at me with tears in his eyes. "I'm running mad, Aurora. I'm going mad, and I'm turning into a monster." He responded, his voice cracking as he shivered like he had seen a ghost.
  • " What! What are you talking about?." I asked worriedly.
  • Did he maybe kill someone?
  • I wondered, but I knew it couldn’t be. My best friend was nothing like that.
  • " I went to the club to celebrate the contract I won from Skyline...." His voice trailed off like he had remembered something. Something that scared him.
  • I would have been extremely happy to hear that if he didn't look like he was on the verge of a breakdown.
  • "...... I drank the flaming dragon special, like 7 to 8 glasses, and then I s......started to feel..ling weird. I-I left the club to calm myself, but then I started hearing things. And before I knew it......" More tears ran out of his eyes. "...... I turned into a monster. A Wolf." He rounded up and finally broke down.
  • My eyes widened.
  • "What!!" I exclaimed.
  • How?.
  • He removed his hands from my waist and rubbed his eyes. " I know, I know, it's unbelievable; I sound crazy. But it happened, I swear to you." He said.
  • How the hell could that happen? Jax........a wolf.
  • " Please believe me, Aurora. You know I would never lie to you; I'm so scared....." His voice broke again.
  • " Jax, relax," I begged.
  • " I can't, and I'm turning into a monster, a monster that kills people.....” More tears roll down, and his palms form into fists. It was as though he hated himself.
  • " Jax......" My words trailed off, and my throat ached from the tears I tried to hold in.
  • "...... And I keep hearing voices in my head....." He went on.
  • " Listen...." I was saying before he cut in.
  • "......it won't stop coming....." He said again and paused.
  • It was like watching my friend run mad. It was painful and heartbreaking.
  • " Stop....." I pleaded, my heart aching and tears welling behind my eyes.
  • "....I can still hear it...."
  • He was stuck in his head, and he couldn't hear me. So I did the one thing I could think of.
  • I kissed him....... I kissed Jax.
  • He didn't respond immediately, then one hand grabbed my waist, the other grabbed my head, and he kissed me back...... as if his life depended on it.
  • I broke the kiss and looked into his eyes.
  • "I'll never let anything happen to you, Jax. Whatever this is, whatever is happening to you, we'll solve it together." I assured. Even though I knew what it might be.
  • How was I to tell him that he was what he dreaded and that I was the same too?
  • He looked at me with hunger, pain, desire, fear......so many emotions running in his head, and it broke me to see him like that.
  • " You promise?." He whispered.
  • I nodded.
  • “ I promise,” I assured.
  • He kissed me again, this time with a lot of passion.
