Chapter 7 Why Would You Kiss Melanie?

  • Benjamin could tell that his facial expression was far from pleasant, especially when he was met with such resistance from her. His temple twitched as the veins on the back of his hand bulged. He was also seemingly suppressing something as he growled maliciously, "Where is your conscience?"
  • Melanie knew what he meant. The Moores, other than Benjamin and Jadyn, all treated her dearly, and she sincerely cared for them with all her heart. "I will personally come and apologize another day, but for now, please let go of my hand."
  • However, Benjamin's face merely darkened, and his grip tightened. "Go back now!" he commanded gravely.
  • Melanie's eyes turned red-rimmed as well. However, she remained obstinate. "No!"
  • Suddenly, the man inched closer to her and pushed her chin up, forcing her to look into his fathomless eyes that could seemingly swallow her up. "I said now! Do you not understand me?"
  • "And I said no! Did you not hear me?!" Melanie's chest heaved as she screamed. Throughout the year, he had always watched her from a distance, observing her as she danced around him, showing no emotions toward her. But this, whatever was happening right then, was a first.
  • Benjamin bore into her for a moment before a barely noticeable chuckle escaped him. Melanie's eyes trembled slightly, and before she knew it, he had clasped the back of her head and attacked her lips as her eyes widened.
  • "Mm!" The young woman attempted to shove him away after recovering from her stupefaction. Unfortunately, the difference in strength was overwhelming. Her resistance seemingly only piqued Benjamin's interest.
  • Just as the two were locked in an impassioned kiss, a startled cry came from behind, "Ah!" Jadyn stared in shock and disbelief at the embracing couple in the courtyard with her phone in her hand. "What are you two doing?"
  • Melanie shoved Benjamin away upon hearing the voice, and this time, it was effortless. Her face turned red, and she wiped her lips harshly, glaring daggers at her soon-to-be ex-husband. She raised her hand and delivered a slap, her hand trembling.
  • On the other hand, Benjamin licked his lips, his gaze dark and tumultuous. He turned his head slightly, fixating on her swollen lips, as if he was about to say something. But before he could, Jadyn rushed over, glaring at Melanie with hatred. "How dare you hit my brother?! Melanie, you shameless wench! I can't believe you're still seducing Ben when you're already divorcing him! You—"
  • "Jadyn Moore!" Benjamin barked icily. "This is none of your business!"
  • Jadyn instantly became aggrieved with oncoming tears, gazing at Benjamin as she choked out. "Ben, Sophia got into an accident…" At that, she shot another glare at Melanie.
  • Benjamin checked his phone at once, only to frown and stride away. However, he stopped after a few steps and looked at the woman, whose back was turned to him. Though he couldn't see her expression right then, he thought he saw her shuddering and couldn't help frowning deeper.
  • "It's very late now. I'll have the chauffeur send you home." With that, he walked away, this time without another word.
  • Jadyn followed after him but stopped when she passed Melanie, looking at her with disgust. "You see this, don't you? Sophia is and will forever be Ben's top priority. You, on the other hand, are nothing but a joke and will only be abandoned. I advise you to stay far away from my brother. Hmph!"
  • Melanie stood rooted to the spot for what felt like forever before she looked up at the bright moon in the sky, then turned around calmly and walked away.
  • On the way to the hospital, Jadyn glanced at Benjamin, who was in the driver's seat, expecting to see nervousness and urgency. However, there was nothing but calmness on his face, and she bit her lip as the scene from earlier flashed across her head. "Ben, why did you kiss Melanie?"
  • Benjamin kept his gaze forward, overtaking the other vehicles on the road smoothly. "What reason do I need to kiss my woman?" he retorted icily.
  • "But you two have already divorced!" Jadyn reminded him, sounding surprised.
  • The car had now stopped outside the hospital. Benjamin glanced at her and asked, "Sounds to me like you don't know what exactly divorce means," he argued, turning his head to her.
  • It took Jadyn a moment to finally realize what her brother meant. They had only reached an agreement and signed a contract, but they hadn't gone through the legal procedure at City Hall. So, legally speaking, they were still married as long as they didn't obtain a divorce certificate.
  • "You can't be serious! What about Sophia? Do you not love her anymore? Why did you abandon Melanie, then? Isn't it because you're worried about Sophia that—"
  • At this rate, Benjamin could feel his patience running thin. He had no intention of listening to his dear little sister rambling on and on. So, he pulled his phone out and showed her the message. "Do you get it now?"
  • Jadyn stared at the message Sophia sent him. 'Ben, save me!'
  • She looked away with disbelief, her head struggling to process the situation. But Benjamin had already walked ahead without waiting for her to catch up.
  • So, Ben had only abandoned Melanie because he thought Sophia might be in life-threatening danger and prioritized her?
  • "H-How can this be…"
