Chapter 6 I'm the One Who Asked for the Divorce
- However, Benjamin merely glanced indifferently at her before walking past her. On the other hand, Melanie began regretting her words after questioning him, especially when she saw the hint of disdain that flashed across his eyes.
- Why would I think like that?! I know just what he's like after having spent a year with him. He would never bother to stoop this low. Besides, he had no reason to do this, no?
- After Benjamin took a few steps, he stopped and turned around to look at the young woman, whose face was enveloped in awkwardness. "Are you planning to stand here until it gets dark?"
- Melanie finally came around and looked up, but he had already turned away, walking with a steady and calm pace. So, she took a deep breath and followed him inside.
- Inside the solemn and traditionally styled living room, Edward Moore, Benjamin's grandfather, knocked his cane heavily on the ground and asked, his voice hoarse yet incredibly commanding, "Speak up. How in the world did this divorce come about?"
- When Layla King, Benjamin's mother, saw that Melanie remained silent, she entreated, "Melanie, we're all here today. You can tell us if you've suffered any grievances." At that, she shifted her gaze to Benjamin, who seemed indifferent to the matter, and glared sternly at him before turning back to Melanie. "If Ben has wronged you, don't worry. We'll stand up for you."
- She knew her son well. The young man might have a cold and reserved nature, but he wouldn't do anything outrageous.
- Melanie felt uneasy. In the year since she married Benjamin, they had genuinely treated her well. She didn't want to lie or deceive them, but she didn't want to reveal the truth either, especially not in front of Benjamin.
- Edward's patience seemed to have worn thin at this point as he struck Benjamin's arm with his cane, startling everyone with the loud thump.
- "Grandpa…" Melanie looked up at once only to find Benjamin looking straight at her, his gaze dark and obscure, causing a lump in her throat.
- "Speak! What have you done?!" Edward boomed.
- However, Benjamin only quirked his lips and narrowed his eyes slightly, staring intently at his frightened wife, his emotions unfathomable. "I, too, like to know what I've done for her to force me into a divorce."
- "Excuse me?!" Melanie almost couldn't catch her breath at his outrageous remark, and her widened eyes fixed on him. I forced him into a divorce?! You're the one at fault in the first place, deceiving my sincerity and treating me like a fool! You were the one who stayed out all night with another woman, and now you're trying to turn the tables?!
- She turned agitated at once, a mixture of anger and resentment welling up inside her, and her eyes started to turn red.
- The turn of events made the elders ponder the situation, their gaze shifting between the young couple.
- Benjamin also turned grim. If it weren't for the inappropriate setting, he really wanted to question her about the expression she was wearing. What in the world had he ever done to her?!
- Suddenly, Melanie stood up and bowed to everyone.
- "Indeed, it was me who proposed the divorce, and we have already signed the divorce agreement. As for the reason, it's simple: we're incompatible."
- "You… This…" Her resolution had seemingly stupefied everyone.
- Benjamin's face turned grimmer, even more so. Yet, he said nothing but only bore into her.
- Just then, Jadyn shouted from the doorway, "Let her divorce Ben if she wants it so badly! Why are you guys stopping her?! She was the one who shamelessly married—"
- "Shut your mouth!" Marika Jensen, Benjamin's grandmother, reprimanded coldly.
- Jadyn rolled her eyes, crossed her arms, and stood beside Melanie, whispering into her ear, "I'm surprised you have some shame and self-awareness in you."
- Melanie clenched her fists and bowed deeply again. "I'm sorry for making all of you worry, but I'm serious about the divorce. I'll be taking my leave now." With that, she turned around and left.
- "Melanie, Melanie!" Marika held her chest as she glared disapprovingly at her grandson. "What are you still doing here? Chase after her!"
- Jadyn frowned as she defended her brother. "Why should Ben chase after her? It's not like he likes—"
- However, before she could even finish her words, he had already stood up and strode away.
- As Melanie was walking, her arm was suddenly grabbed and pulled back forcefully.
- "What are you doing? Let go of me!" She looked up at him, her breathing becoming rapid.
