Chapter 10 Her Anger
- Half an hour later, Jessie departed with a look of satisfaction.
- Meanwhile, Violet, her hands trembling, dialed Marcus' number.
- "Marcus, what kind of person did you find for our daughter? He spent five years in prison and was just released yesterday! The moment he was freed, he abandoned the girlfriend who had faithfully waited for him all that time!"
- On the other end of the line, Marcus was taken aback. "Violet, try not to get too worked up…"
- "How can I not be? Marcus, listen to me. Crystal needs to divorce him immediately!"
- "Violet, calm down. I'll investigate Dave's background. Let's discuss this further when I get home tonight, alright?"
- "There's nothing to discuss! Divorce is the only option. I'm calling Crystal right now!"
- Violet promptly dialed Crystal's number.
- "Crystal, you need to divorce Dave immediately!"
- "Mom, you just woke up. Don't get upset. I'm busy right now; can we talk about this when I get home later?"
- Crystal was equally shocked. She had sensed her mom's unease about the marriage, but this reaction was far stronger than anything she'd seen before.
- "How can I not be upset? Do you even know who Dave is?"
- Violet's voice trembled with anger. "He's an ex-convict who spent five years in prison!"
- "Mom, who told you that?"
- Crystal felt as if the ground had shifted beneath her. "H-he's Drug Lord's junior…"
- "Junior? That's bullsh*t!"
- Violet was seething. "For all I know, he might be Rufus' illegitimate son! That conniving old scoundrel Rufus, posing as Drug Lord, had the audacity to pass off an ex-convict to deceive you! He'd better stay out of my sight!"
- "Mom, I-I need time to think."
- Crystal's mind was in turmoil.
- After hanging up, she sat in a daze for several minutes.
- Then, she called Marcus.
- "Dad…"
- "Your mom called you too?" Marcus sighed. "Crystal, you need to be prepared…"
- "It's true, isn't it?"
- Crystal knew Marcus must have confirmed the information.
- "Despite everything else, it's true that Dave was in prison for five years and was just released yesterday." Marcus sighed again. "But it's also likely true that he's Drug Lord's junior."
- He asked, "Crystal, what are you thinking? If you really can't accept this, I'll help you get a divorce, even if it means offending the Drug Lord."
- "Dad, our agreement with Drug Lord was that if I married Dave, he would cure Mom. Now that Mom is awake, if we go back on our word so soon, won't our family lose all credibility? Though I'm shocked by Dave's criminal record and it may invite ridicule, if we annul the marriage immediately, it could cause an even bigger scandal. Dad, please ask Mom to be patient. I need more time to observe him."
- Crystal recalled how Dave had fled the bathroom in a panic the previous night and thought that perhaps he wasn't as bad as she feared.
- A truly bad man wouldn't have let an opportunity like that slip away.
- ...
- "Dave's days of comfort are numbered."
- Jessie was striding toward the president's office at Dayrale Group, recalling how Violet had nearly fainted from rage.
- Dave was nothing more than a man she had discarded. If he truly married Crystal, the story would spread, and she'd become the laughingstock.
- However, Jessie knew she couldn't rely solely on Violet's response.
- Dayrale Group was the only company in Granville capable of rivaling the Granger Group, and the Orion family had some previous dealings with them.
- She had also crossed paths with Dayrale Group's president, Patrick Quinn, a few times, and his gaze always lingered on her in a peculiar way.
- "It's time to give that old lecher a little something."
- Jessie resolved, unfastening an extra button on her blouse before stepping into the office.
- "Mr. Quinn, you're here." Jessie noticed someone seated in the chair, their back turned to the door, and she approached with a sultry tone. "Do you remember me? I'm Jes…"
- The chair silently swiveled around.
- Jessie's voice abruptly died, as if choked off mid-sentence.
