Chapter 9 In the Lap of the Gods
- They got into the car and set off steadily. Gillian Wesley stole several glances at the man sitting next to her, hesitating as though she had something to say.
- Henry Porter turned to face her. His gaze landed on her collar bone area. There was an instance when Gillian noticed a flash of glittering light across his eyes and subconsciously covered her neck with a hand.
- “Is there something you’d like to say?” The man asked with a smirk.
- Gillian gawked at him. How does he know?
- “I can hear you breathing in my direction, your lips seem to be moving as well.” Henry Porter explained with a smile.
- Astonishment filled Gillian’s face. She nodded awkwardly but quickly realized that he couldn’t see her, so she said, “You’re brilliant. I do have things to say.”
- “Don’t worry about offending me.” The man’s smile was shockingly gentle.
- Gillian then asked, “Let me ask you. Why aren’t you mad about being betrayed by both your fiancée and your cousin?”
- Henry smirked, “I can’t control what happens to me, so I shall put it in the lap of the gods.”
- “Oh…” Gillian then answered unknowingly.
- She was wondering whether she should take after him – let go of the grudges.
- Henry Porter laughed, “What’s the matter? Can’t accept the truth even at this point?”
- “I…” Gillian swallowed, struggling to gather a response.
- Henry then patted her on the shoulder, “Don’t worry, I’ll make whoever wrongs you pay for their misdeeds.”
- The man had faced her all this while. He wore a gentle smile to go with his unblinking yet glittering eyes. One would not be able to tell that he was truly blind.
- His smile infected Gillian. She said jokingly, “Would you rather stand on an outsider’s side and confront your cousin?”
- Upon hearing what she had to say, Henry’s brows instantly scrunched up. “Gillian, as long as our marriage is in effect, you are my closest family. Everyone is an outsider to me except you.”
- He was not loud, but his sound was profoundly adamant, leaving no room for doubts.
- Gillian was startled. She stared into these dark, deep-set eyes and suddenly felt a tinge of warmth from the reflected light in his gaze.
- She felt tingling on her nose while nodding at him firmly, “Sure! Got it!”
- The man then nodded contentedly in response. “I’ve always been an unprejudiced man. My motto is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”
- Henry paused for a moment before arching his brows, “My cousin has cheated on you. By the looks of it, he has to lose his manly bits.”
- Huh?
- Gillian Wesley froze for fractions of a second. Before she could gasp in surprise, Henry had demanded Kevin Black, “Kevin, see to it, make sure you leave no trace!”
- “No! There’s no need!” Gillian hurriedly waggled her hand at Kevin Black. “I was just kidding! I would never hold grudges against jerks like him! It’d be a waste of my time!”
- Gosh!
- She was only making a playful remark, but Henry shocked her by taking it seriously. Was he really going to cripple Derrick Marco’s purple helmeted warrior of love?
- Urm… The imagery was unbearable.
- Kelvin Black stared at Gillian’s instantly paled face and held his laugh. He said solemnly, “Madam, Young Master Marco has brought you misery. It is Young Master Porter’s duty to avenge you. I suppose I need to find a sharp knife quickly.”
- “No! Honestly, don’t!” Gillian shot her hand in the air, “Who told you that I was miserable? I wasn’t miserable at all! Derrick Marco and I weren’t even in a serious relationship! So I don’t feel upset at all!”
- To desperately make herself sound more convincing, Gillian chuckled and added, “I was a little mad at first, but my anger has mollified now! Nobody deserves that many tears!”
- “Madam, are you honestly not upset and angry?” Asked Kevin while secretly peeking at Henry Porter from the rearview mirror only to see him curving his lips upward. The faint smile gave Kevin a tacit understanding.
- “Yes, honestly!” Gillian nodded.
- “Then… As a servant, I’m now put on the spot. Should I listen to Young Master or you, Madam?” Kelvin deliberately let out an aggravated frown.
- Henry Porter then uttered with a deep voice, “The madam, of course! From today onwards, you take orders from me, but the madam’s orders supersede mine. Prioritize her orders over mine. In the event of a disagreement between us, take her orders. Am I clear?”
- Kevin nodded with conviction, “I sure do!”
- Listening to their word exchanges, Gillian was baffled. She stared at the man’s stern look and felt a dash of warmth brewing in her heart.
- Amid their conversation, the car steadily entered the Porter Manor.
