Chapter 51 Reckoning
- The soft cushion of the sofa’s armrest cradles my head as I drift in and out of consciousness in Efrem’s office. A book rests on my lap, its pages whispering against my fingers as I lay curled up on my side. Despite my efforts to stay awake, the irresistible pull of sleep tugs at my eyelids.
- It’s been three days since my nightmare, three days since Efrem declared he wouldn’t let me out of his sight. True to his word, we’ve been inseparable—rising together, sharing meals, me watching him in the indoor gym while I soak in the jacuzzi, and now, me napping in his office while he works. The only reprieve, if you can call it that, is the fifteen minutes of privacy I get in the bathroom.
- I’m so tired. A bone-deep exhaustion that seems to seep into every fiber of my being. My eyes grow heavier with each passing second, the words on the page before me blurring into indecipherable smudges.
